Philandos mother, Valerie Castile, requested to hold the service at the Cathedral because she wished the funeral to be an ecumenical opportunity for people to come together in a new way and pray for peace and reconciliation, according to a July 12 statement from the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
The service will not be a Mass, as Philando was from a non-Catholic Christian tradition, according to the archdiocese. At a July 12 press conference on the Minnesota State Capitol lawn, spokespeople for the family said the Castiles are part of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in St. Paul, and that its pastor, Steve Daniels Jr., plans to deliver a eulogy. Father John Ubel, the Cathedrals rector, will preside at the funeral.
The funerals prayers will focus on the preservation of peace, justice and reconciliation.
The Catholic Church believes that burying the dead is a corporal work of mercy, and of particular importance in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, as declared by Pope Francis, the archdiocese stated.
Speaking at the press conference, Valerie Castile said she wanted her sons funeral to be held at the Cathedral because he was a king.
My son is a king, and he is also a martyr, so I thought that was the best place for his services, she said.
Judge Glenda Hatchett, an Atlanta-based attorney and former TV host of Judge Hatchett, who is representing the family, said the family is grateful to Archbishop Bernard Hebda for his support.
A procession will begin at the Brooks Funeral Home in St. Paul at 10 a.m. and end at the Cathedral at 11 a.m. A viewing will be held from 11 am. to noon.
Philando Castile, 32, who was black, died July 6 after being shot by a police officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights. His death has prompted demonstrations across the Twin Cities drawing attention to racism and officer-involved shootings of black men.
Sorry, can’t make it!!
You mean that crip that yelled “I GOTS A GUN” and got blown up? I can’t care. Acquittal!!
I guess it’s not the first time the family of a non-Catholic chose to have their deceased’s funeral service in a Catholic Church. The Clergy may want to obtain bullet-proof vestments prior to the service.
I sort of doubt if the connecting rectory has any such garment already there.
Disgusting. I guess Hebda is more media whore than pastoral shepherd.
WOAH baby, that is gonna be one helluva spectacle of weeping, wailing, screeching and fainting!! Guess the family wants to really attract attention to themselves/S
Whats the over/under on how many are gonna faint when the TV cameras are on?
If he was a king, shouldn’t she be wanting a castle?
How embarrassing.
And the next day, riots all over.
Sort of a Friday prayer + jihad timeline.
I suppose it would be difficult to say no when some one asks to have a funeral service in your church. But this is really regrettable.

Uh, NO. Have it at your own church. Don’t use the grandeur of that building, dedicated to Paul disciple of Christ the King, for your “king”, you make me want to puke.
“A king” ??. That is hillarious. A king !! Bwahhhaaaaa!! He is a dead “king” . Where is his concealed carry permit? I haven’t seen that? The only thing I have seen is him with his dying hand on his glock. Was he a damned terrorist “CRIP” ?
Why don’t they have a gay wedding in the Catholic Cathedral as well. All the bishop has to say is “we did not have a Mass as part of the wedding.”
Errrr. Last I knew....if I wasn’t Catholic....I wasn’t allowed to take Communion. And I’m not poking Catholics at all. Your denom....your rules. So this is allowed?
I sure hope he’s in heaven now!
Somebody’d old Uncle Andre is going to get trampled if he wanders in front of a camera while Black Lives (don’treally)Matter is chanting something racist and profane that just barely rhymes. “MOVE, OLD MAN!! MOVE out the way M**ther F**ker! YOU BLOCKIN DA F**kin CAMERAS!!”
But Philando Calrissian Castile was not fully a Baptist either because when he was baptized the minister allowed I’m to get up before the bubbles stopped coming to the surface.
Seems to me they should have the service in the Mormon denomination.....since he’s considered a ‘king’, now.
An excess of unwarranted self-esteem.
“Lo Siento (sorry), but we are having Bingo & Quilting Night, at that time. So sorry. It it not possible. Not at all possible!”
Well since you mentioned the wailing and screeching....is hillary going to attend????
