Fascinating!
The “traditional” choir and ensemble church music sounds soooooooo much better, clearer but more resounding in the long stone-walled churches of Europe than in today’s big arc’ed circles of wood and carpeting in the “modern” US Catholic churches built since 1965
But the guitar-based repetitions of “Sons of God, Hear His Holy Word” DO need to be excommunicated into silence! 8<)

This week- well a couple of weeks, actually, I have been struggling with trying to adjust to my favorite pastor’s church having a ‘’praise band’’.
I was raised in a church that is a cappella. To double down, when I was much younger, I was in a band & so have a bias toward the egotism of musicians in general. Which ‘’has no place in church’’ of course.
It’s probably apples & oranges to what Msgr. Pope is talking about, but if he’s true to form, there’s a message for me in here, somewhere.

Some music is sacred to me. For example- A former love interest and I had a song we felt was “our song”. I think any couple in love that has one of their own can say that it is “sacred music” to them.
“status without controversy” Never in a million years.
Or worse - Marty Haugen and Dan Schutte. Not even Catholic, and members of dead liberal United Church of Christ.
My parents are Catholic, I sometimes attend services with them. I cringe when I hear the Marty Haugen dreck. If they want to use non Catholic material, better to use Fanny Crosby, John Wesley, Isaac Watts.

In regards to the music during the first few centuries, I have always wondered if from the NT book of Philippians 2:5-11, which is always read on Palm Sunday, in many Bibles, it takes the shape of a poem. Most likely it was and this is my guess that it may have been used as an very early song of the humility of Christ:
“5 Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8 he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—

No. You don’t get to decide that some secular pop song has sacred meaning. It may mean a lot to you, which is fine, but it isn’t sacred. You can tell yourself that it is sacred, which is fine if you don’t mind self-delusion, but don’t expect me or anyone else who actually knows and cares what constitutes sacrality to indulge your delusions.
