Behind the Scenes at Vatican II
Catholic World Report ^ | 2/3/16 | Peter M J. Stravinskas

The first volume of Henri de Lubac's "Vatican Council Notebooks" (Ignatius Press, 2015) is filled with detailed and often surprising accounts of conversations, disputes, and key figures at the Council

On January 29, 1959, Pope John XXIII shocked the Church and the world with his announcement at the Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls in Rome that he was convoking the first ecumenical council in nearly a century. In fifth grade, Sister Regina Rose began to inform us of the impending council, noting that we would be living through a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With that in mind, she also assigned us the task of compiling a scrapbook of newspaper clippings about the Council-which project I dutifully fulfilled until the completion of the Second Vatican Council during my sophomore year of high school (unfortunately, that relic was lost in a family move). From 1962 to 1965, the first item on the evening news was the day's proceedings at the Council, with the NBC reporter signing off with his signature line: "Reporting from St. Peter's, Irving R Levine, Rome!"

It was with such historical reminiscences that I picked up the notes of Henri de Lubac, the Jesuit peritus at Vatican II who lived under a cloud prior to the Council and eventually was named a cardinal by Pope John Paul II. At the same time that I was reading this work, I was also moving through Father Louis Bouyer's memoirs, tracing his life from infancy through his stellar theological career (with a strong emphasis on the lead-up to Vatican II and its aftermath). I link the two for two reasons: First, the amazing capacity of both men to recall in astonishing detail (with no tape recorders or other such devices) word-for-word conversations. Second, because both men had reputations (rightly or wrongly) before....

tl;dr I've been sensing the Vatican pushing itself to be more inclusive of other religious beliefs. I guess we re going to be assimilated into the globalists.

Thank you for the great story. De Lubac and Boyer had front row seats and clear opinions. De Lubac was very bright and all his books are worth reading. But he was like Karl Barth who tried to import Kant into Christianity which has been proven to be a failure. Just look at the Episcopal approval of non traditional weddings.

Vatican II was totally unnecessary, and a total disaster.

Thank you for this link. VII so brings to mind the Francis Synod.

I brought Fr. Peter Stravinskas and Alex Jones and Jeff Cavins to Hawaii for a Fullness of
the Faith Conference some years ago, and got to know them quite well. Fr. Peter is an
intellectual, a true man of the Church, and an enthralling conversationalist. And he had an
extremely positive influence on our Filipino priest, as well as on the great Alex Jones,
who had recently brought his entire congregation into the Catholic Church.

Yes, Fhios, you rightly perceive the big picture here.

Don't know if you are joking or not, but in case you aren't, this is not the Alex Jones of
radio and cataclysm, but of catechism. This Alex Jones was an Evangelical pastor of a
Black church in Detroit, who with 60 members converted en masse into the
Catholic Church

Oh, LOL, now I get it! You can see why I was surprised. Perhaps one of those two guys should use a middle initial.

Thanks for the clarification, which was even more helpful for me, as I was thinking E. Michael Jones (can’t sleep, and it’s the middle of the night), which is even more bizarre.

The problem is will “the Church” ever admit it and repeal it (and actually return to true Catholicism) given all of the prelates think it’s been a good thing and disseminate its teachings on a daily basis?

To do so, would admit that “the Church” was in error for 60 + years. I think it is much more likely that we are in the end times and/or need divine intervention to fix this mess.

Oh wonderful Vatican II. It solved all the problems facing the Catholic Church. Problems like too many people in church. Problems like liturgical music. Problems like lack of reverence. Problems like orthodoxy in the hierarchy./s (as if needed.)

Vatican II was and is an unmitigated disaster. I trust there is a special ring of Hell for all the progressives and heretics (not mutually exclusive) who imposed their garbage. And another special ring for Annibale Bugnini.
