Pope Francis said he supports the idea of setting a fixed date for Easter Sunday, which for centuries has moved back and forth according to the lunar calendar.

Easter and the Holy Week that precedes it is rooted in the Jewish Passover and fixed on the first full moon, which falls on the first Sunday after the spring equinox, March 21. […]

The Orthodox Churches normally celebrate Easter a week after the Catholics. […]

Historians and expert agree that a common date for Easter would encourage “reconciliation between the Christian churches.” …

Actually, on this one, I agree with the Pope. It could be the last Sunday in March or April. I don’t see any huge downside.

I see a huge downside. Jesus was a Jew. The whole Crucifixion and Resurrection are closely interwoven with the Passover holiday.

We need to understand the roots of Christianity and understand Judaism. The whole idea of confounding Easter with the vernal equinox just reeks of paganism. It comes after Passover.

I’m not Catholic and therefore this is none of my business. BUT, Fixing the celebration of Easter to a given Sunday in a given month is a great idea.

As a Presbyterian I agree! Let's pick one Sunday and be done with it. It screws up all the Spring fashion sales with one year in March, the other in April.

Details, details.........

Historians and expert agree that a common date for Easter would encourage “reconciliation between the Christian churches.” …

Easter is the only Christian religious observance that is based on calculating the day of observance from a lunar cycle, known by the Latin name Computus. Note that the various Saints' Days and Christmas are always celebrated on a fixed calendar date. That's why using the currently accepted formula of the first Sunday following the full moon following March 21 on the Gregorian calendar, Easter Sunday could be anywhere from March 22nd to April 25th on the Gregorian calendar.

Indeed, religious observances based on a lunar calendar can have tremendously different dates based on when the lunar new year starts. In the case of the Asian Lunar New Year observance, it can vary between January 24 to February 17. For the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), it can be between September 5 to October 5.

And then there is the Islamic calendar, where each month is based on physical observance of the first new moon of the month. Because of this, calculations of the calendar can be fiendishly hard, and why the dates of Ramadan and the hajj pilgrimage season are different for each year based on the Gregorian calendar.

Hmm. I seem to recall someone in the Bible who in the last days, will seek to change times and laws.

All religions do this for the transition to something else.

Christianity modified the date for Jesus’ birth to conform to the Sun God Ra’s birthday of Dec 25.

Same old games. This Pope has an agenda, and it’s not for the benefit of the Church. What can you expect from a Jesuit?

Slow? The institution has been around for 2000 years When John the 23 called for VII 80% of all Catholics attended weekly mass. Now that the miracle of Protestantizing the Church has happened less than 30% attend every week.

Nice job! Sounds like a rapid suicide to me.

I see a huge downside.

The date of Easter (Pascha to us Orthodox) was set by an ecumenical council. It would take another council to change that.

Yup.
Plus, I wonder if Francis realizes he’s also messing up Mardi Gras.

Maybe Pope Francis is trying to honor John 17.

I do not support setting a fixed date. I’m okay with keeping our current formula. I’m okay with adopting the Eastern Orthodox formula (which more closely follows the original Catholic formula for Easter). I’m okay with following the Jewish formula and defining Easter to be the Sunday immediately following Jewish Passover. I’m not okay with any other options I can think of.

Not quite the same thing as One World Religion. Christians should be one in spirit. Outward things can be a reminder or a manifestation of such.

Also agree Easter should be tied to Jewish calendar. No replacementarianism.

It makes sense that it follows Passover rather than the first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of spring.

A lot of people don’t know how it’s determined and when I tell them that, their eyes just sort of glaze over.

You really don't like what Mortalium Animos has to say about John 17 do you? Guess it doesn't matter to you being pre-Vatican II and all.

And here it seems opportune to expound and to refute a certain false opinion, on which this whole question, as well as that complex movement by which non-Catholics seek to bring about the union of the Christian churches depends. For authors who favor this view are accustomed, times almost without number, to bring forward these words of Christ: "That they all may be one.... And there shall be one fold and one shepherd," with this signification however: that Christ Jesus merely expressed a desire and prayer, which still lacks its fulfillment. - Pope Pius XI, 1928
