Social activist surprised but delighted to join top cardinal in high-level environment conference at the Vatican
She is one of the worlds most high-profile social activists and a ferocious critic of 21st-century capitalism. He is one of the popes most senior aides and a professor of climate change economics. But this week the secular radical will join forces with the Catholic cardinal in the latest move by Pope Francis to shift the debate on global warming.
Naomi Klein and Cardinal Peter Turkson are to lead a high-level conference on the environment, bringing together churchmen, scientists and activists to debate climate change action. Klein, who campaigns for an overhaul of the global financial system to tackle climate change, told the Observer she was surprised but delighted to receive the invitation from Turksons office.
The fact that they invited me indicates theyre not backing down from the fight. A lot of people have patted the pope on the head, but said hes wrong on the economics. I think hes right on the economics, she said, referring to Pope Franciss recent publication of an encyclical on the environment.
Release of the document earlier this month thrust the pontiff to the centre of the global debate on climate change, as he berated politicians for creating a system that serves wealthy countries at the expense of the poorest.

secular Jewish background pretty much means ATHEIST.....at least to my Jewish husband. If you are a secular Jew you believe in NOTHING except BAGELS.
Absolutely disgusting. May Francis’ reign be short.
Atheist might be a slight overstatement, but it does give a functional understanding. Naomi Klein is particularly noxious. She’s just lesser known than Michael Moore because she mostly tortures Canada.
Pope Chatty Cathy (hopefully the Last ASAP) strikes again! May the Next Conclave elect a Catholic as Pope not a Marxist politician.
Catholics believe theres an essential difference between those who break away from the Church for evil or selfish reasons and those who do so because of mistaken beliefs. As a Catholic, Ive gotten on well and worked with Evangelicals and other Protestants. And I certainly know many Protestants of different kinds who are tolerant of and happy to work with Catholics.
Did the Evangelicals and other Protestants you worked with know that you considered them virtuous pagans?
Also, Catholicism has sects? And mainstream Catholicism does not teach that it is the only way to be saved? And sects that disagree with that teaching are what? Heretical? For believing Catholicism is the only way to God? Hey feel free to say whatever comes to mind - don't let the entire history of the Church stop you, LOL.
Where did I say they wish ill will or fervently THAT another religion goes to hell? Do you really need to make things up out of the whole cloth to defend your faith?
I said, quite simply, that it is the Catholic position that Protestants WILL go to hell, and that Catholics accept that - just as Protestants accept it about Catholics. And then i said "But oh no, that's not wishing evil in each other, that's preaching Jesus' doctrine of love to those choosing hell in error."
In other words, letting yourself believe eternal hell about another Christian - even denying their Christianity itself - makes a mockery of what Christ taught.

I’m quite tired of being told if I’m not RC I’m not a Christian. I believe there are some saved RC’s just as I believe there are some protestants that are not saved. However most RC’s at least in this forum are unwilling to admit that one can be a Christian and be saved by the blood of Christ without being a member of their particular club.
From the catechism
818 “However, one cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born into these communities [that resulted from such separation] and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as brothers . . . . All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church.”272
819 “Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth”273 are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: “the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements.”274 Christ’s Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him,275 and are in themselves calls to “Catholic unity.”276
Toward unity
820 “Christ bestowed unity on his Church from the beginning. This unity, we believe, subsists in the Catholic Church as something she can never lose, and we hope that it will continue to increase until the end of time.”277 Christ always gives his Church the gift of unity, but the Church must always pray and work to maintain, reinforce, and perfect the unity that Christ wills for her. This is why Jesus himself prayed at the hour of his Passion, and does not cease praying to his Father, for the unity of his disciples: “That they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be one in us, . . . so that the world may know that you have sent me.”278 The desire to recover the unity of all Christians is a gift of Christ and a call of the Holy Spirit.279
No Catholic ever told yo you were not Christian if you were not Catholic.
Did not happen
You have not been on many of the threads here then.
Who is being nasty? I don’t have time to go through old pings right now, I have other things to do. I wish you a good night despite your tone.
Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.
‘Im quite tired of being told if Im not RC Im not a Christian’
This was the quote from md mom. It is untrue as far as I can tell. I asked for proof. No proof was provided
Try this entire thread then ... declaring the pope to be heretical for admitting that Christians exist outside the RC church.

BUMP
very true
You and many other protestants are most certainly Christian. However, not being Catholic — and a good one — your soul can not enter heaven without a lengthy purification in purgatory. The Good News is that if you refuse to convert to Catholicism while on earth, God might make you into one afterward!
No Faithful Catholic ever told you you were not a Christian for not being a Catholic. It is not true.
I have provided tge statement from the Catechism. But that is it good enough for you and that’s typical on tgis anti catholic forum
But tge Catholic Church does NOT consider non Catholics to be not Christian Not true
Read what I posted from the doctrine of the faith. I have no idea what the source is from which you posted. It is non coherent
Furthermore, I would expect you to quote from free republic, as you stated that I should read the threads here to see catholic condemnation of Protestants
You cannot do it
No true catholic would ever say a non catholic is not Christian. If you find something it’s a waste of time if it’s not Fromm this forum
