Fox News Contributor Goes Off on Christians: So Bible verses are "vile" now?

Fox News contributor Bernard Goldberg told Bill O’Reilly last week that Republicans live in fear of “the organized Christian right.”

Goldberg and O’Reilly were discussing presidential candidate Ted Cruz, who recently asked a local reporter in Texas if the left — including the media — is obsessed with sex, after reporters repeatedly badgered him with questions about gay marriage and homosexuality. Both said that Cruz handled the question well, even though Goldberg admitted, “I’m not a fan of Ted Cruz.” But Goldberg had more to say.

“Ted Cruz could have said, of course, I have no animosity against gay Americans. Next question,” Goldberg said. “But you know why he didn’t? Because every Republican lives in fear of the organized Christian right. There may not be a lot of people in the organized Christian right, but they have a very big megaphone, and [Republicans] live in daily and deathly fear of what they would do…if you even say, ‘Oh, I have no animosity against gays,’ that’s what they’re afraid of.”

He added, “There are more than a few conservative Christians — I’m not saying a majority or anything like that — more than a few who not only are against gay marriage, Bill, but detest gays, period.”

Goldberg offered the hate mail he receives as proof of the Scary Christian Right Wing Monster.

“I know this because when I come on this program and say I’m for gay marriage, I don’t only get e-mails from people who are against it — fair enough. Reasonable people can disagree on that,” he said. “I get e-mails from people who write the most vile things about gays, and they proclaim their Christianity. And I know for a fact that you get the same kind of e-mails.”

Goldberg didn’t say how many of these hateful emails he’s received — five…ten…fifty? But he paints an evocative tale of a breathtakingly powerful Christian group — one that threatens to bring down the entire GOP — fueled by shadowy figures who refuse to evolve on marriage. And they’re all sitting in their parents’ basements in their underpants sending Goldberg emails or something.

Bill O’Reilly, who has 3.3 million viewers on an average night, countered, “I have to say, I don’t get many of those. And the fringe is different. ”

“Wait, wait. Hold on. I’m not willing to accept that it’s a fringe — you don’t know what percent — percentage it is, and I don’t know what percentage it is. I know it’s too many,” and animated Goldberg shot back.

So according to Bernie, it’s not a fringe and it’s “more than a few conservative Christians,” but not “a majority or anything.” So, somewhere between a fringe and the majority, I guess.

Which means he’s willing to entertain the possibility that these “vile” emails are representative of Christianity in the main.

Goldberg didn’t say what criteria he uses to judge these “vile” emails. If a Christian emails him and says she believes the traditional Christian teaching that unrepentant homosexuals (and thieves and liars, et al) are in danger of eternal punishment, does that go onto the “vile” pile on Goldberg’s desk?

Goldberg is right only on media bias. He’s quite the liberal otherwise.

“Ted Cruz could have said, of course, I have no animosity against gay Americans. Next question,”

First of all, they would have just asked again. It was like the sixth or seventh question on the subject.

OTOH I'm sure he does get a lot of mail expressing vile hatred towards homosexuals. I see comments like that on FR all the time.

What an idiot. The goal is to push back against the liberal attacks. Just like Cris did last week. We’ve had 2 cycles of defensive politicians get squashed by the left. No more. Argue against the premise. Cruz did it here. Gingrich did it well last cycle , despite not being a viable candidate. He still out campaigned the field.

Goldberg did not know that last week Ted Cruz was asked if he loved homosexuals, and he gave the correct answer. He said that Jesus teaches that we should love everyone, but that does not mean we approve of everything that others do or believe if they are against Christian teaching.

How about... He could have said, ‘I’m actually more concerned about the other 98 percent of Americans and intend on not focusing on fringe wants.’

“Ted Cruz could have said, of course, I have no animosity against gay Americans. Next question,” Goldberg said.

What he did say was that Scripture commands us to love everyone. Which is the SAME THING.

If Romney had used Newt’s tactics, even a pale imitation, he’d have won. Look at the first debate.

Mr. Goldberg, may I call you ‘rube’? It seems more appropriate than Bernard! Are there loons that call themselves Christian? Yes, think WBC however, EVERY denomination condemns their actions and besides, the WBC supported the Dhimmicratic party in previous elections. It is universal in ‘right wing’ Conservatives to condemn the sin not the sinner.

It would be wise, Mr. Goldberg, to change your name to ‘Rube’, because you certainly give the appearance of being a ‘rube’ or ‘shill’, a left wing, ‘useful idiot’ rube!

Saw it. The people whoreinforced the non bigotry in my life were the nuns and my parents who were religious. They reinforced that all people were Gods children de fusing bigotry which was around

Goldberg is being an old bigot. An anti Christian one. He may have met bigots who called themselves Christian. But the two are exclusive mutually

[[[Bernard Goldberg is a conservative like David Brooks is a conservative]]]

Secular Jews are generally not Christians, safe to say.

Even Charles Krauthammer, adamant hawk and defense conservative, is liberal on abortion, gay marriage, and using the f-word. He professes to admire Christians, but he does not share their beliefs or passion.

Goldberg offered the hate mail he receives as proof of the Scary Christian Right Wing Monster.

So every piece of hate mail Bernie Goldberg receives is from a Christian? And he knows this how, because they say so in the email?

Oh. My. Sides.

That's such a well worn tactic. Write a nasty email. Pretend to be your opposition so the blame gets put on them. Can't say how many times I've seen that happen, but it's been ALOT.

Now, about that "big scary Christian right."

Got news for you Bernie. Christians who's hearts are filled with the love of Jesus DO NOT HATE GAYS.

We love the sinner, not the sin.

That's an important distinction to draw.

Further, any Christian with the love of Jesus in their hearts doesn't go around screaming "GOD HATES FAGS." We do the opposite. We tell those who are Gay that they are God's children too, just as much as we are, and that our Father in Heaven desires them to be in heaven with him just as much as he desires us to be there.

That means we, just like those who are gay shouldn't act out our sins. It's just that simple.

If I'm an alcoholic, the Lord finds that just as sinful as a practicing homosexual. The Lord calls upon BOTH of us to draw near to him, find our strength in him, and resist our temptations.

So surprise Bernie! You have no idea who or what the Christian right is. You've been duped.

Many, many Christians stayed home in 2008 and 2012. If Cruz gets the nomination, they will turn out in huge numbers.
