"I feel like saying something that may sound controversial or even heretical. But there is someone who knows that despite our differences we are one. It is he who is persecuting us. It is he that is persecuting Christians today; he who is anointing us with the blood of martyrdom, knows that Christians are disciples of Christ. That we are one, that we are brothers! He doesn't care if they are Evangelicals, Orthodox, Lutherans, Catholics or Apostolic. He doesn't care! They are Christians."

Thank you so much, dearest xzins!
I find fault and disagreement with much of what this Pope has said, but not with this statement.
Is this Pope a GOOD Catholic? I don’t know. I know he’s a Jesuit from Latin America where the politics lean Left and he’s made and is planning to make several political statements.
Am I a GOOD Catholic? I don’t know. I think I come up short, but I pray.
I’ve always considered believers and followers of Christ fellow “Christians.”

Does Francis disagree here? Or is he stating that the Devil recognizes that "we are one"? Considering Francis' comments about his so-called "ecumenism of blood" weeks ago, he is absolutely stating that we are one. And he knows it sounds heretical .... and quite frankly doesn't care.Actually, I think Francis does believe it doesn't matter whether you're Lutheran or Catholic. And that belief is heretical. I'm just saying that in the particular sentence that was quoted, he was referring to how Satan sees all Christians--it doesn't matter to Satan whether you're Catholic or Lutheran... he hates you because you believe in Jesus Christ.
At other times, and even in other parts of that "chat" Francis has clearly deviated from the belief that the Catholic Church possesses the fullness of the Christian faith.
And you're right that his admission that the statements he was about to make would be considered heresy indicates that he did intend for them to be interpreted in an heretical way.

This pope has personally told protestant pastors like Joel Osteen, Rick Warren and others he has no desire in them becoming Catholic. He said we are brothers in Christ and it makes not a wit what denomination they might belong to. If that is not the talk of a heretic I dont know what is. That's the talk of the Devil...The Deceiver...

I respectfully disagree with your interpretation. I will pray with Pope Francis for such unity to continue. You see, I was also in the Evangelical camp at one time. Those whose hearts are openly seeking the fullness of Truth will inevitably end up Catholic. :-)

I understand what you are saying.
I happen to disagree with him that the Devil sees all Christians the same. But it is interesting that Francis agrees with what he thinks the Devil believes.

No, I disagree with YOUR interpretation of his words as applied to this particular situation.

So how do you interpret Pius IX’s comments about John 17?

I happen to disagree with him that the Devil sees all Christians the same.I think the devil sees them as different shades of the same color. All other things being equal, in my view he hates Catholics more than he hates Lutherans. Because Catholics have more of the Truth. But most all he hates those who love.
But it is interesting that Francis agrees with what he thinks the Devil believes.
BAM!! There's no comeback to that!

Thank you, Onyx. We’re all trying to advance just a little, grow just a little, do a little bit better. Every day, hopefully. I’d prefer bringing a smile to God’s face instead of a frown. Faith, Sister....you are a blessing.

Just ask yourself what the “grave error” was...and what the historical context was.

And the comments so far are very interesting! Catholics had better get used to the idea of joining religions I’m thinking. This pope is at the leading edge for sure.

The gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church, Christ promised it and I believe it.
Matt 16
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
At what point will you finally realize that the "it" Christ was referring to, just might not be the Church.
Matt 16:
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
The one thing that man cannot corrupt or the devil stop is the Father revealing to those who seek that Jesus is the Christ.
This is the unshakeable rock that His Church will be built upon. But doesn't mean that man can't choose to go a different way and make their own churches. God doesn't recognize them as His, but they're free to do it. Right up till the second coming....
If this is truly the Church of God, how could the Pope lead it astray? Yet, you're watching it happen right in front of your eyes.
I'm not slamming on the Catholics. That's a sincere and honest question.
