Archbishop Blase Cupich allows non-Catholic Governor to receive Holy Communion
CHICAGO, April 24, 2015 (ChurchMilitant.com)Eyewitness reports as well as television footage clearly prove that Illinois governor Bruce Rauner received Holy Communion at Cardinal George's funeral Mass at Holy Name Cathedral on Thursday, April 23.
Governor Rauner is not Catholic.
Therefore, what appears to be a grave violation of Canon 844 has been committed. Present at the Mass was Chicago's new archbishop Blase Cupich.
In addition to the violation of canon law, the question is being asked: Was a sacrilege committed on the new archbishop's watch?
According to canon law, since the governor is a non-Catholic, he is unable to be given Holy Communion unless a number of conditions are all met:
1. Foremost, there must be a grave and urgent need, usually understood to mean danger of death.
2. The governor must demonstrate Catholic faith in the Real Presence.
3. He must be duly disposed, and not conscious of any grave sin.
As for the matter of sacrilege, it is understood to mean to treat that which is holy in an unholy manner. Unfaithful reception or administering of Holy Communion is a sacrilege. So a number of questions arise:

Increase in lawlessness? Check.
Bill Clinton got Communion every time he went up for it.
Obviously he’s a Christian. Is it necessary to get so worked up.
Don’t confuse Christian with Catholic.
“Obviously hes a Christian. Is it necessary to get so worked up.”
DITTO!
Cupich is no Cardinal George, that’s for sure.
Catholic communion must be “more equal” than Christian communion.
Teddy Kennedy always got it, and Nancy Pelosi gets it.
Governor Cuomo gets it.
Next, probably Muhammad Abdullah will get it (sarc/off)
I’m not a catholic.
But there are generally understood rules among civilized peoples where if I have the occasion to attend a catholic mass (a wedding) that as a non-catholic it would be unprincipled of me to attempt to take communion from the priest.
How would he know I was not a catholic? Yet this nitwit Governor simply was born in a cellar and never brought up. This is one of those things where you don’t just follow the line, and do as the others do. You politely excuse yourself, and most would understand and respect you for not violating tenets of their faith.
Is there anybody with any class any longer?
One is real and one is fake.
How is anybody who is not a catholic supposed to know what the catholics rules are? Other churches do this.
Am I supposed to be surprised?
From Catholic365.com:
“What is the wafer you all are receiving, and can I get one, too?
The Source and Summit of everything we do as Catholics is the Eucharist, aka: Holy Communion. Jesus said in the Gospel of John 6:51, I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. We take this very literally. At the Last Supper Jesus took bread and wine, blessed them and said, This is my body This is my blood and Do this in memory of me. (Luke 22) We take this, with the Gospel of John very literally, too. Jesus Sacrifice for us on the Cross is what we celebrate at Mass. He made that Sacrifice once and for all, but told us to participate in it, too. Our celebration of this Sacrifice isnt a new one; it brings the one and only Sacrifice into the present. The hosts and wine change from those elements to His True Presenceto the Body and Blood of Christ. Its not a symbol for us. Its a reality. And so, we ask that only those who are united with us in that belief through the Catholic Church participate in receiving Communion.”
And as someone says later in this thread, its class or I would call it politeness. I’m not going to go into an Orthodox Temple and insist on sitting with the men or hug my Jewish neighbor on the Sabbath. Do I believe that I would make him unclean? No but he does and so I respect his faith.
He’ll become a Cardinal soon.
Yes. I am a former Catholic. On a few occasions I have returned to mass at the request of family or friends. I do not take communion because I respect the beliefs of the people in the church and the cannons of the church. It is more than respect but that is the best explanation I can provide tonight. Have a good weekend.
When I was 13 years old I went through confirmation at the Episcopal church in which I was raised. I had a hunger for God that my parents, who did not attend church, were not particularly interested in fulfilling. Friends of theirs who were Catholic took me with them to Mass on Sundays every now and then, which I enjoyed...however, not having any idea about the True Presence, I would go up and receive Communion! I don’t know why on Earth they let me! I just thought “hey I’ve been confirmed so I can do this now, isn’t that wonderful!” But, wouldn’t you know that around the age of 35 I converted and am now Catholic. Guess the Lord does work in mysterious ways!
There is no excuse for the governor not to have known the protocol. As for regular folks, normally at a Catholic Mass when the priest knows there are many attending who are not Catholic (wedding/funeral), they will announce diplomatically that Communion is only for Catholics who are ‘in a state of grace.’ That means Catholics who’s been to confession and had their sins absolved.
The reason Communion is exclusive to Catholics and only Catholics in “a state of grace” is that Catholics believe the Communion host they are receiving has been ‘transubstantiated’ during its consecration into the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ, not a symbol of the body and blood of Jesus Christ, as non-Catholic Christians believe.
when I go to a Catholic Mass, I just sit back in the pew and let Catholics who are receiving Communion go by me. It’s not a big deal to observe that respect for their faith.
I wonder what drives such people...Jealousy perhaps.
Bill Clinton took Holy Communion in Africa when he was president, and said he knew more about Catholicism than the Pope or Bishop.
