The following is an edited transcript of the audio.
Are Christians under the 10 commandments?
No. The Bible says we're not under the law.
I love Romans 7:4-6. By way of analogy, it says that you are married to the law. And you better stay married because if you leave this husband and go marry another you are going to be called an adulterer. But if your husband dies, then you can go and remarry.
And then Paul draws the analogy outa little complex the way he does itsaying that you died to the law. You aren't married anymore, you can have another husband, namely Christ. He's raised from the dead.
So, our approach towards ethics is different. We don't ask the question, "Am I under the law?" We are under grace. The law is already fulfilled perfectly by Jesus. We are in Jesus and as far justification goes, God sees it as completed for you, one-hundred percent. He says, "You've trusted my Son. You've been grafted in him. You are in Christ Jesus and he fulfilled the law perfectly. He covered all your sins." God sees you in and through Christ, therefore, as far as final judgment goes God is 100% for you. That is settled and nothing is going to change it.
Now, shall we sin that grace may abound? Paul says, "Dead men don't sin." If you've died to sin, how can you still live in it? The new birth is the writing of the law on our heart so that we are not under it, it is under us. It is just coming out.
The way we strive towards being obedient, holy and loving people is not by getting up in the morning and pulling the list out of our pocket. No! We get on our knees and we open ourselves to the whole counsel of God in the Bible. We saturate and shape ourselves by everything he has done, he is doing and he will do. We stake our lives in the gospel and then instead of serving the law, we serve one another in love.
Love is the fruit of faith in Jesusfaith working through love. And if you ask, "What does love look like?" First John says, "It keeps the commandments." That brings us back to the question, which commandments? I would say, the ones that are loving.
Love God and do as you please is not bad advice, if you're bent on holiness. If you're bent on love the ten commandments are really important. You should hang them on your wall and you should measure your life by them, but in a very different way than when you were under them, because they have been kept for you.
You are now married to the risen Christ. You are not married to the law and the oldness of the letter, but to the newness of the Spirit. Our whole approach towards transformation, love and life is different than list keeping.
I met a Catholic to whom the bible is a foreign concept. His summary of his religion is “I try to obey the 10 commandments”. That’s just a sad testimony.
Christians are not "under" the law, they are under the blood.
Your joking right? That Catholic Church threw out the second commandment long ago.
If any of the ten commandments are reiterated in the New Testament ... THEN THEY STILL APPLY.
The only one that is NOT reiterated is the keeping of the Sabbath.
Just a couple thoughts here ...
First they never were applicable to the Gentiles.. they were the law given to the Jews...
Second.. remember the gospels are retrospective of the time before the New Covenant ...and so the Jews, and Jesus were still "under the law'
...Jesus told us that He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.. something only He could do
Mat 5:17"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Roman 10; 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes
My friend no one can keep the 10 commandments ...if that is how one believes they will be judged...that is how one will be judged.. and he is sure to fail
Look to Christ
People should read revelation 13 in some detail..
That chapter details the satanic alliance and what they do and cause others to do.
And if we study if closely, it is His first 4 commandments..
The ones that deal with worship.
It even speaks of a mark’.
Which is just a counterfeit for what God’s seal is in Deuteronomy 6:8..
The final battle in revelation is over worship.
And the enemy will cause people to break the worship commandments in the 10 commandments..
And there are only two sides..
And the patience of the saints is recorded in revelation 14:12.
Most people don’t think they will be around when revelation 13 comes to pass.. spiritually, it happens every day...
Without His Grace, no one would be saved. Tough to confess sin if one doesnt know what sin is..
Gets tougher as the world ignores them more and more.. even churches..
The problem is in the question.
The goal of the Christian is to be Christlike, since Christ kept the law perfectly then to be like Christ is to make the law inferior because you have an example — it’s like having the choice of a path with sign-posts vs. a guide who knows the way and will personally escort you.
>> Do you know why God Gave the law to the Jews?
>
> That’s not the question.
But it’s relevant — if there was a tent outside where you slept while your house was being built, would the tent be of any import once the building was complete?
Agree 100%
...if that is how one believes they will be judged...that is how one will be judged.. and he is sure to fail
Agree again ... but my comment specifically relates to those commands within the 10 commandments that are specifically reiterated in the NT. They are commands ...
How many commands of the Lord are optional for a believer in the NT?
If your answer is anything other than 'none' ... you're missing it ...
Let me highlight by example ... lets take 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
Just on face value I see 4 of the 10 commandments there (idolatry, adultery, thieving, covetousness)...
If Jesus commands us to obey Him ... we cant pick and choose what to obey just because we are not under the law?
And there is that command in Matt 28 ... 'teaching them to obey all I have commanded you ...'
Maybe or maybe not. So tell me, which of the Commandents shouldn’t you follow?
Obedience to the first Commandment is prerequisite to demonstrate belief. This whole tripe reads like liberalism 101. Lazy Christians lay the whole load of life upon Christ. Notice who will NOT be in eternity as recorded in the last chapter of the volume of the book.
Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, (Christ) and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
This writing is an embarrassment to any who claim to follow Christ!!!!!!!
Gentiles were NEVER under the 10 commandments .. they never applied to them..
Do you understand the purpose of the 10 commandments?
Roman 10; 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes
Do you know the purpose of the law?
Ha, IF a 'gentile' lived among the Israelites they sure were expected to follow the law. You really think 'murder' did not carry the same penalty to a gentile living in Israel's territory as a person of any of the twelve tribes?
No wonder liberals thumb their collective noses at the Constitution/law. The are not under it in the like manner, too many claiming to be Christians say they are not under the 10 Commandments. Do you even know who gentiles are?
I sure hope I get a ring side seat on Judgment Day when the excuse for lawlessness is, 'don't you know God, that man Jesus, you sent, gave us 'grace' and fulfilled the law'.
No maybe about it; the question of the Law's purpose is relevant. — Or to put it another way, can the law give life? Can it make righteous? Can it erase sin?
(Gal 3:19-22)
Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring would come to whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained through angels by a mediator. Now a mediator involves more than one party; but God is one.
Is the law then opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could make alive, then righteousness would indeed come through the law. But the scripture has imprisoned all things under the power of sin, so that what was promised through faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
Could you identify the NT verse that do this?
Thanks.
The first five are spiritual. Obedience to these five demonstrates the love one has for the Creator. The last five are civil, and required for a civilized society. The Creator is the same yesterday, today and will be forever. And He said law breakers will NOT enter eternity.
Might say they are God's rule book by which He will judge, each and every soul that was born from above. Little more of John 3, that the mislead do not realize the first requirement for any to 'see' the eternity is to take this flesh journey.... or as Christ said to be born from above. You know, at conception the already existing soul is placed in utero, NOT this born again junk which is not. Love of the Creator is a desire to live by His Commandments. Salvation is a completely different subject.
Which of the Commandments shouldn’t you follow?
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 ... there are 4 of the 10 in there ...
