Why bother to listen to this music?
How can we come to understand these people in war, if we don't listen to them in peace?
They're on the other side of a divide from us—very high illiteracy rate, if a person who can't read sees a scrap of printed matter from a newpaper on the ground, they will pick it up in case it might be the Holy Quran.
Music has the ability to transcend this divide.
It's great music, one of its influences is Roman culture—this instrument, the Qunan, the name comes from Greek, "Canon", a ruler or tuning measuring rod. They have influenced us in return, in Spanish, Italian & Greek music. It's very easy to listen to, some of what they do is the best in the world.

Don’t the really ultra-strict Islamists hate music, too, as a form of distraction from devoutness? I heard they killed some kids watching a soccer match, too.

When I was a lad in Istanbul I heard a lot of Turkish and Greek popular music. They were almost identical except the Greed songs eliminated most of the excess wailing of the Turkish music.
I’ve often said if you want peace in the Middle East, send them COOKBOOKS.
After suffering through several Ramadan “feasts” as an invited guest of Muslim neighbors, I suddenly understood the hostility & crazy.
It all boils down to the food, if you could call it that.
(The last dinner was so bad, everyone migrated to my house for Chinese take-out, including my Muslim hosts)
I do not listen to their music because I do not like their music.

I'll give them their squeaky yodel kind'a voice in music, but there is no beat, no rhythm ... nothing that gets you from point A to point B in a logical, flowing or melodic way.

asides ... the human heart is a sycopasted 1,2 beat and our music follows it ... even headbangers have a 1,2 in its format
Rap music has a beat because said beat was taken from actual music—taken, not imitated.
Peter Gabriel’s “Passion” is heavily infused with Arabic music. Terrific stuff.
Of the 500+ things that are the cause of islamic insanity; their music would be right up near the top; IMO it would be tied with Rap; there is plenty of observable evidence either will drive listeners to violent insanity.
One can separate Arabic culture and Islam just fine. It is not mandatory to have them joined at the hip, except of course for the Islamic pan-Arabists.
The only way you could get me to like this music would be it you add a half dozen belly dancers.
