Christians Concerned as Focus on the Family Watches, Reviews Porn Film ’50 Shades of Grey

Christians across the country are expressing concern as Focus on the Family’s “Plugged In” movie staff has released its review of the pornographic film “Fifty Shades of Grey”—especially that a critic at the professing Christian ministry watched the porn just to tell other Christians that they shouldn’t watch it.

Plugged In said that it received an email from a follower who asked them not to review the film, and thus penned an blog post about the matter to explain its decision to watch and critique the material. “Fifty Shades of Grey is, without question, one of the most ‘popular’ elements of popular entertainment right now—a movie at the center of conversation in countless break rooms and living rooms and even churches across the country,” wrote staff film critic Paul Asay.

(snip)

"[M]y prayer is that I can craft something that, while not necessarily revolutionary, will help all of us, myself included, think through the issues that swirl around the film,” Asay said. “I feel a sense of purpose here in that—a calling, if you will.” But some state that Asay’s justification is faulty, as Christians shouldn’t be viewing porn just to tell others not to watch it.

” Do you not think that the armor of God can protect one from spiritual dangers...”

Only if you are wearing it. And it is not skin. It doesn’t follow you everywhere.

It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated among the Gentiles—a man is living with his father’s wife. 2 And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation. 3 For though I am absent in body but present in spirit, I have already decided about the one who has done this thing as though I were present. 4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus with my spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 turn that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord.

6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast permeates the whole batch of dough? 7 Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch. You are indeed unleavened, for Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old yeast or with the yeast of malice and evil but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Appreciate your response.

It is a “see no evil” approach that leads people to be Naive about Evil itself.

Perhaps this is the case with some folks. Yet, I value innocence as a virtue.

In this media age, we seem to have been herded together to want to drink from the same media broth. I don't like its taste and it appears to have stunted my growth.

I suspect that people have forgotten about FOTF founder Dr. James Dobson was on Attorney General C. Everett Koop's Commission on Pornography during the Reagan Administration.

“Only if you are wearing it.”

Yes, which is why I said it is what is inside that corrupts you. If you are not wearing the armor, then something is wrong with you on the inside, and you should be more worried about that than some silly movie.

I was listening to the Catholic radio station last night and their concern was the affect this film would have on children when it is released and easily accessible.

They had nothing good to say about it at all.

So do I, but it’s noble of them to take a bullet for the team.

The fact that my Church finds no redeeming value in soft-core snuff porn does give me some hope.

I’m sorry, but this isn’t porn. There are plenty of movies out there with more nudity than this one. It may deal with subject matter that these people don’t agree with, but this ain’t porn.

Of course the armor of God can protect. But we are also told not to put God to the test. Why would I allow pollution into my life just because I wont suffer harm? Its still revolting, and I wouldn’t want to spend my money on trash. In addition it destroys your witness in the eyes of the world when you are seen conforming to the ways of the world.

That’s not much different than the progressives who rant about “Faux” News, Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, etc. but have never and will never watch or listen to them. You can comment on anything you want, but your comment loses validity if you are simply repeating what someone else told you, which may or may not be true.

“Why would I allow pollution into my life just because I wont suffer harm?”

That isn’t the subject of the article. The subject of the article is whether someone should view it in order to warn others against it, which is ostensibly, at least, a noble purpose. It may still be misguided, but that isn’t just testing God. It also has nothing to do with conforming to the world, since their purpose is to critique this stuff.

The unsaved world is watching folks. The fact that people who identify as Christian bought these books and went out in droves to see the movie is not lost on them. They see it very hypocritical as they themselves view it as “soft porn”.

I might be wrong but I believe James Dobson is no longer part of Focus on the Family and hasn’t been for quite some time.

Do I need to go on porn websites and check them out so I can warn others?

As I said in my comment, it might still be misguided, but it isn’t what the commenter I was responding to was characterizing it as.

100% completely agree. I have been guilty in the past & realized how stupid it is to criticize only on 2nd hand knowledge.
