Q: Why didn't He just open His veins and give them blood or tear off a piece of His flesh to eat?

This issue was settled over 2000 years ago and subsequently by Augustine, Aquinas, and Newman, all the eminent Lutheran theologians like Richard Neuhaus, to say nothing of the former Chief Rabbi of Rome and the scholars atheists included who converted to Catholicism and accepted this central belief. The proof of the Living Presence of Christ in the Eucharist is irrefutable.

John 6:30 begins a colloquy that took place in the synagogue at Capernaum. The Jews asked Jesus what sign he could perform so that they might believe in him. As a challenge, they noted that “our ancestors ate manna in the desert.” Could Jesus top that? He told them the real bread from heaven comes from the Father. “Give us this bread always,” they said. Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

At this point the Jews understood him to be speaking metaphorically.

Again and Again

Jesus first repeated what he said, then summarized: “‘I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’” (John 6:51–52).

His listeners were stupefied because now they understood Jesus literally—and correctly. He again repeated his words, but with even greater emphasis, and introduced the statement about drinking his blood: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him” (John 6:53–56).

No Corrections

Notice that Jesus made no attempt to soften what he said, no attempt to correct “misunderstandings,” for there were none. Our Lord’s listeners understood him perfectly well. They no longer thought he was speaking metaphorically. If they had, if they mistook what he said, why no correction?

On other occasions when there was confusion, Christ explained just what he meant (cf. Matt. 16:5–12). Here, where any misunderstanding would be fatal, there was no effort by Jesus to correct. Instead, he repeated himself for greater emphasis.

In John 6:60 we read: “Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, ‘This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?’” These were his disciples, people used to his remarkable ways. He warned them not to think carnally, but spiritually: “It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (John 6:63; cf. 1 Cor. 2:12–14).

But he knew some did not believe. (It is here, in the rejection of the Eucharist, that Judas fell away; look at John 6:64.)

“After this, many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him” (John 6:66).

This is the only record we have of any of Christ’s followers forsaking him for purely doctrinal reasons. If it had all been a misunderstanding, if they erred in taking a metaphor in a literal sense, why didn’t he call them back and straighten things out?

Both the Jews, who were suspicious of him, and his disciples, who had accepted everything up to this point, would have remained with him had he said he was speaking only symbolically.

But he did not correct these protesters. Twelve times he said he was the bread that came down from heaven; four times he said they would have “to eat my flesh and drink my blood.” John 6 was an extended promise of what would be instituted at the Last Supper—and it was a promise that could not be more explicit. Or so it would seem to a Catholic.

There are numerous miraculous Eucharistic events, including such as the one at Lanciano, Italy, that persists annually to this day (1200 years it has happened). Science has no explanation for the events.

John, Chapter 6 is why I am Catholic. Matt 26:26-29 reinforces John 6. Also, John 1:1-12, esp. verse 5, when Mary tells the servants (us) to do as He says. That pretty much sums up the New Testament - do as He says.

Anyhow, I have learned in these threads that the Catholics actually do not believe it is literal.

His death on the Cross was literal and the flesh and blood broken and shed he gave for us so that we would have life was literal.

So challenging is this teaching that even many of Christ's disciples are bewildered, saying "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" (John 6:60). Indeed, Christ's words on the Eucharist were too much for some of them to believe. Many of his disciples rejected Jesus over this teaching and left him (John 6:66). And Jesus let them go. He didn't chase after them, saying, "Wait! You misunderstood me." They understood quite well that Jesus was speaking about eating his flesh and blood, and they rejected this teaching. That's why Jesus let them go.

The author omits some key verses between John 6:60 and verse 66. Here's what he left out:

60On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

61Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. 64Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”

66From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

So, they question Jesus' "hard" saying, but the only ones who left from following him were those Jesus noted would not believe. The time frame from the sixth chapter of John until the actual Last Supper, was probably several YEARS. The Jewish people understood the use of metaphor and simile quite well. It was why when Jesus DID conduct the final supper with his disciples and set up the remembrance of the bread and wine, they already understood what he was talking about. Notice...nobody asked him to explain what he meant this time, they knew.

Two final questions...why is it Roman Catholics post so many threads about the Eucharist as if that is the ONLY thing that matters in the life of a Christian? Do RCs think that they are the ONLY believers who properly observe and remember our Lord in the Communion/Eucharist service and if people don't do it like they do they're wrong and going to hell?
