SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) A Bay Area church is now under fire over a controversial new policy saying only boys can be altar servers.
The new practice is making waves at the century old church Star of the Sea. Since the 70s, theyve used altar girls during masses.
The well-known Richmond District church also has a school serving about 230 kids. When the new priest banned girls from being altar servers, it generated outrage among parents and parishioners alike. The priest admits some parishioners even left the church.
Its disturbing, said churchgoer Connie Porciuncula.
Star of the Sea School parent Tara Widmer agrees. Theyre definitely taking a step in the wrong direction, she said.
Father Joseph Illo took over five months ago and decided to train only boys to be altar servers. He said he has no choice but to exclude girls because the future of the church is at stake.
The specifics of serving at the altar is a priestly function, Illo said. And the Catholic church does not ordain women.
But many parishioners and parents criticize the new practice saying it sends the wrong message.
It just kind of makes me feel that Im not good enough because Im a girl, said a 7th grader at the school who wishes to stay anonymous.

Only if your parents are teaching you such a thing. It certainly isn't from the Church.
Wow! That language in a Religion thread? Are you sure you belong here?
“Connie Porciuncula?”
What a moniker!
Luke 8:2-3 shows us that many women followed Jesus and his apostles to help support them. Based on Holy Bible passages, I dont support women priests. But altar girls arguably reflect the women who supported Jesus and his apostles imo.
Me too. altar boy vet here. I think it’s a good thing actually. The priests nowadays are a bunch of faggots anyways which prevents them from molesting and raping the opposite sex.
Well everyone's gotta admit, it's been downhill ever since then.........
LOL!
“Remember when it was controversial for girls to serve at the altar?”
Understandable. Girls have cooties.
“but He chose none of them to be among the Twelve Apostles.”
He wanted to do it but Paul wouldn’t let him #liberaltheology
I rather doubt that. The San Francisco Diocese has no monopoly on the transgressions of the priesthood. That behavior was wide spread until the lawsuits started. The Diocese is acutely aware of the damage a few bad actors can cause.
The SF Diocese has paid $68 million in settlements over the course of the scandals. They even fired all teenage rectory workers. Nominally it was presented as a safety measure as in the workers worked alone at desks and in areas that were open to street traffic presenting the possibility that crazy street people can wander in. The other side of that action helped to remove any temptations that may come up.
Well that’s fine, let em go,they should go ahead and join a flavor of religion that meets with their morals and desires and strictures. If they don’t like the tenants and strictures of the Catholic church they can be Protestants, or Seventh Day Adventists, Baptists,Lutherans or whatever, but join a church you agree with don’t expect or demand the church to change for you.
I remember when my church allowed girls, I went into raptures.
I’ve never agreed with having girls as alter servers.
There are Protestant Churches that are more strict than the Catholic Church , there are some that are moderate and there are liberal ones too that allow women to be ordained.
Southern Baptist men as Ministers (Preacher) and women can be counselors, lay ministers.
ELCA (Liberal Lutheran)- Ordained women, some are allowing lesbians
LCMS (moderate Lutheran) women as lay ministers, counselors and teachers, Men generally ministers but some are wanting women to be ordained.
WELS (ultraconservative Lutheran) men as ministers women can be teachers and counselors only no such issue as lay minister
Methodist (moderate to Liberal) women are ministers
PCUSA (liberal Presbyterian) women as ministers
PCA (moderate to Conservative Presbyterian) Men as ministers women as counselors, teachers and lay ministers
I wonder how many of those are "pro-choice" Cafeteria-Catholics (aka Pelosi-Catholics).
Yes, I do.
Glad to see the bias-free moderating on this board continues apace.
LOL
Well........bye.
Imagine that!
Thank you for your disgusting reply. The priest in question has been known to me for many years, he is interested in saving souls not in sin.
