Joel Osteen, Gosh . . .

Not a shock: megachurch celebrity tv star preacher Joel Osteen doesn’t know the Bible, reports the clever and energetic Tristyn Bloom of The Daily Caller. (The story’s several weeks old but I just saw it so pass it on for those of you who hadn’t.)

In a Monday post to his verified Facebook page, Joel Osteen ministries, read: “God said in Numbers 11:23, ‘Moses, is there any limit to My power?’ He was saying, ‘Moses, you saw Me part the Red Sea, stop the sun for Joshua, keep three Hebrew teenagers safe in a fiery furnace, don’t you realize that I can bring water without rain?’ There’s no limit to God’s power.”

As of Friday afternoon, the post had over 317,000 likes and 52,000 shares.

One normally hesitates to criticize ministers from another tradition, but Joel Osteen perverts Christianity in a way that will keep people from Christ. He preaches a Christianity without a cross. As one commenter put it:

Joel Osteen is a motivational speaker who pretends to be Christian in order to make money. He and his wife live in a multimillion dollar mansion, and in return sell a gospel of false promises, bad theology, and gross consumerism. It is unsurprising that he fails to quote Scripture accurately, because adherence to Scripture has never been a priority of his.

What is truly unfortunate about him and his operation is that through their false teaching they mislead millions. I hope and pray for his repentance, before his final judgment and damnation.

I don’t know about “pretends.” I have no idea what Osteen thinks he’s doing. He does not speak as a Christian preacher but as a motivational speaker who exploits Christian language and Christianity’s continuing cultural authority to bring people (and their donations) in. There’s nothing like the message to the rich young ruler in his preaching, no take up your cross, not even a watch with me.

The Christian life is a constant struggle to move closer to Christ, against the flow of our natures. We’re swimming upstream. With God’s help, making progress, but only because He helps us keep pushing against the current. Osteen offers a pleasant ride on a warm spring day down a wide slow-moving river lying on a well-stocked raft. He presents this as if it were grace and not the easy choice of our fallen natures. “God wants you to do what you want to do” is not the Gospel.

You think you are so ‘slick’, just like the fraud Osteen thinks he is slick, easily fooling the gullible ones. Now, one more time, show us where you relied specifically to post #85. Answer it’s charges posed to you one by one. Go ahead, you can do it.

A pastor knows better. He certainly seems to misspeak a lot.

A 5 second invitation to follow Jesus based on what? The greed of the listener? Certainly not based on the need to repent, because he doesn't preach sin.

What about Obama being a Christian and doing a good job? You agree with your false prophet on that too?

What do you think of this?

Transcript of Joel Osteen's invocation prayer over Houston Mayor, Annise Parker, who was inaugurated as mayor of Houston. She is the first openly gay mayor of the city:

FATHER, THANK YOU FOR THIS TIME TO COME TOGETHER WITH OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO CELEBRATE YOUR GOODNESS AND THE GREAT CITY WE LIVE IN, AND THE NEW LEADERSHIP WITHIN OUR CITY. LORD, WE ASK YOU FOR WISDOM FOR ALL OF OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. LORD, WE PRAY THAT YOU WILL GUIDE THEM, DIRECT THEM, THAT YOU WILL HELP THEM MAKE THE BEST DECISIONS FOR OUR CITY. LORD WE JUST PRAY FOR YOUR STRENGTH AND YOUR PROTECTION AROUND THEM AND YOUR FAMILIES. WE ASK THAT YOU KEEP THEM STRONG AND HEALTHY. LORD, WE JUST THANK YOU THAT WE HAVE A GREAT CITY AND WE BELIEVE OUR CITY CAN EVEN BE BRIGHTER. WE CAN HELP PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD. LORD, WE COMMIT THIS DAY INTO YOUR HANDS AND WE ASK THAT EVERYTHING WE DO WILL BRING HONOR TO YOU. Lord WE JUST LIFT UP ESPECIALLY MAYOR ANNISE PARKER. LORD, WE THANK YOU JUST FOR RAISING HER UP AND FOR YOUR GOODNESS AND MERCY IN HER LIFE AND JUST SUPERNATURAL WISDOM FATHER. WE HONOR HER TODAY AND OUR OTHER OFFICIALS, AND WE COUNT IT A JOY AND AN HONOR TO BE HERE IN YOUR PRESENCE WITH ALL OUR FRIENDS. WE JUST THANK YOU FOR THIS DAY. IN JESUS' NAME, AMEN

I didnt take his statement to be a literal “God was saying” as talking about a historic, contemporaneous event, or fact of a previous occurance. It seemed to me, as stated previously, my take was that God’s promises apply to all events, no matter when they occur, past, present, and future. It is not poor teaching. Gods power knows no date.

Would you say that what Joel said about the furnace would have been any different if he had mentioned instead any specific occurance where Gods promise to take care of his children happened in New Testament times, such as miraculous healings?

He was not using the statemnt you object to in a historic literal sense, but in a metaphorical manner.
Not enough to get my blood pressure worked up.

I have never sent Joel a dime, and have no future plans to do so. But, he is interesting.

He used the furnace example in a metaphorical sense, not a literal sense. If he made a statement about God’s power and protecting his children always by instead using a miracle that happened in the New Testament era, such as the promse if eternal life through Jesus, and his rising from the dead, would you still be complaining?

So you disagree with the scripture ‘render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s” The government and it’s representatives are the authority, whether we like it or not. We have our say due to free speech, but what do we do if that is gone, and we can’t have our say...do we obey or do we not? WWJD?

The woman is Mayor, so he was respectful in his prayer, he did not call her holy but he did ask for wisdom for her;...her sin is what God hates. God loves her and wants her to have Salvation. Sin is sin, do you treat an adulterer or fornicator any different than a homosexual?

NO, all are sinners and in need of God’s grace. If you are a Christian you should be ashamed of yourself, as you were once a sinner too. When asked to give an invocation many Pastors accept at the urging of the Holy Spirit, so that they may be a good witness of God’s grace.

Keeping an open door to sinners is what causes many to come and seek counsel. Gods ways are not our ways, and I am guilty at times of not showing enough grace...that is where most Christians fail. We forget where we came from, and how we got here.

Do you think she would have thought well of Christ, if Joel Osteen had treated her terribly and refused to pray? NO, Ministers are to be an example of God’s love.

“What about Obama being a Christian and doing a good job? You agree with your false prophet on that too?”

So do you want him to lose his 501 (c) by criticizing the President publicly, if he has one; the church probably does. Maybe there are some areas he thinks the President is doing a good job...I don’t know. That would be acceptable to say that if he did. Even if he thinks in 27 other issues the President isn’t. Respecting the office of the President is different than respecting the person in it.

I know that in the Bible we are to respect our government authorities in office. We may complain here on FR, but it isn’t likely we would be doing that on national TV without the platform to do so, where it would make a difference. And a business man would not hurt his employees by acting bizarre... criticizing pubic figures unless on the right platform....a pulpit is not the right platform for criticism of others publicly based on God’s word.

Conviction comes from the Holy Spirit, and how do you know which souls may or may not have come to God based on a service....are you a mind reader?

Yes, because he’s a false prophet, a deceiver, a charlatan, a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

My objection to Osteen’s ministry isn’t based on any one statement or television appearance. I will allow that he could have been confused in a given instance and misspoken. His fundamental message is unbiblical. His Jesusy self-help be-all-you-can-be motivational happy talk isn’t biblical. If he actually believes what he writes and “preaches,” he misunderstands the whole thrust of the Scriptures, as do many FReepers. His is another gospel. And people with itching ears are lining up to get it.

Well said .45. You would think that with the past national disgraces/frauds and scandals type things, (Tammy Faye and Jim Baker, the mess with Swaggart and Gorman etc. etc. come to mind), you think folks would have their guards up a little bit more when it comes to these frauds. It just goes to show how easily some are STILL drug around like sheep and fooled.

I love when these type of articles are posted. It means I can speak the truth about Olsteen and not get banned.

You're not allowed to say anything against the toothy charlatan Osteen in those stupid "devotionals"

I don’t remember the Bible saying anything about the exact type house one should live in but it says a lot about people who put wealth ahead of service.
Do you remember about the wealthy young man who wanted to serve Christ? Do you know what Christ told him?

How do we know wealthy Christians put wealth above service

Is not looking at the wealth envy?

Something I was convicted of early in Obama’s administration.

1 Timothy 2:1-4 (AMP)
1 FIRST OF all, then, I admonish and urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men,
2 For kings and all who are in positions of authority or high responsibility, that [outwardly] we may pass a quiet and undisturbed life [and inwardly] a peaceable one in all godliness and reverence and seriousness in every way.
3 For such [praying] is good and right, and [it is] pleasing and acceptable to God our Savior,
4 Who wishes all men to be saved and [increasingly] to perceive and recognize and discern and know precisely and correctly the [divine] Truth.

They may be the dirties politician in the world, but as Believers, you lift them up in prayer - for them personally and for the city/state/nation etc.
