Apologists Concerned About Rick Warren's Alignment With 'Holy Father'
Charisma News ^ | 12/3/14 | Mark Andrews

"Christian unity" is one of those terms that stir up a whole spectrum of—sometimes emotional—opinions.

On the one hand, we know that Jesus prayed to the Father concerning future believers "that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you" (John 17:21a, NIV).

On the other hand, charismatics know it is almost pointless to discuss the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12, 14) with Baptists or most anyone else from a mainline denomination. And Protestants of just about any stripe get riled up when they hear Catholics talking about papal infallibility or their adoration of the Virgin Mary.

It's on this latter point that Rick Warren, senior pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, and successful author, has waded into a hornet's nest of controversy by telling a Catholic News Service interviewer that Protestants and Catholics "have far more in common than what divides us" and that Catholics do not "worship Mary like she's another god."

Regarding Warren's view that Catholics do not worship Mary, Matt Slick, writing on the website of the Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry, goes into great detail with material from Roman Catholic sources that say Mary is "the all holy one," is to be prayed to, worshipped, that she "brings us the gifts of eternal life" and she "made atonement for the sins of man."

If that's not putting her in the place of Christ as a god-like figure to be worshipped, then what is it?

"We believe in Trinity, the Bible, the resurrection, and that salvation is through Jesus Christ. These are the big issues," Warren says. "But the most important thing is if you love Jesus, we're on the same team."

To Warren's point about being on the same team, Slick.....

I say that you don’t know what unanimous consent of the fathers means:

Thanks for posting that. I was just looking at it a short time ago.

Probably more often than you have.

My reading of it is more often and longer than yours.

>>Mary is not the origin of the eternal Word, the Second Person of the Trinity.<< Which, by Catholic admission, is the only nature of Jesus that is divine. Mary is not the origin (aka mother) of the divine God.

Of course she is not. I must have just said the same thing about six times.

Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the eternal Word, the Second Person of the Trinity, who is God.

For this reason, Mary has been called the "Mother of God."

Really? Looks like SOME Catholics bow to statues of Mary. You can deny it all you want

Looks like some Protestants bow to beds. You can deny it all you want.

"Please show proof that what Paul was referring to as "tradition" is what the Catholic Church teaches today. No Catholic has been able to do that for me."

You beat me to the keyboard. Therein lies the problem...the Roman view becomes a self-proving, circular argument: We believe we have the authority and that authority says that what we say is true, so what we say is true, because we have the authority. Pardon?

For this reason, Mary has been called the "Mother of God."

By RCs taught to call her that on occasions.

Proving...nothing.

You are aware, aren't you that posting this in (humorous) rebuttle to her showing a pope bowing and kneeling in front of a icon (statue on a pedestal) of Mary...you are aware that amounts to a lie, don't you. Deflective and deceptive.

>>My point is that if His Son is to be perfect<<

If God could make Mary sinless being born of sinful parents why couldn't He do that with His son?

I THINK that what you mean is that St. John might have taken steps to conceal the body of Mary from relic-hunters.

Your theory offers no explanation for the total absence of any CLAIMS by anyone to have relics of Mary. Fraudulent claims of such things are quite common in history. How do explain the total absence of any such CLAIMS, true OR false, when it comes to Mary?

Precisely WHAT PREVENTED even potential fraudsters from even claiming to have relics of Mary? They had every worldly motive (money, fame, tourist attraction) to make such claims, but they never did.

Your double-reverse “you cannot disprove my negative statements” approach must have provided your instructors much pleasure as they listened (read) your arguments/term papers. If they, in fact, are in agreement with you, they too were wandering in darkness.

Now there is solid evidence from scripture. NOT The propensity of Catholics to make dogma from lack of evidence is stunning.

What say you vladimir998?” I say that you don’t know what unanimous consent of the fathers means:

so it means whatever we want. wow...that's a consistent way to understand things.

* The site you point to itself indicates where our teachings on Mary arise from, in Tradtion.
* The Scripture you hold as the only source of Truth itself is the result of Catholic Tradition
* How can Scripture stand alone without this human reason you speak of: interpretation, translation, language, context?
* we don’t pray TO Mary or worship Mary. If you hear that, it is false. It is the same as praying in a group on earth, except better because she and all the saints have life in heaven, and know the Father/Son/Spirit better than anyone on earth.

Mary gave birth to Jesus.

Which makes Mary the mother of Jesus.

Therefore, Mary is the mother of God.

Which denies His humanity and hence, the Incarnation.

<<...she is called "Mother of God.">>

By millions of people over hundreds of years, all who received improper instruction from wicked men. Everyone winds up in error and worshipping an ancient goddess renamed Mary by the RCC.

By the very scriptures you purport to believe, using the KJV which any bona fide Fundamentalist or Protestant should be using. Miriam/Mary is the mother of Immanuel, which the Holy Spirit explicitly translates as "God with Us." Miriam is the mother of God with us. Mary is the mother of God. Don't grieve or provoke the Holy Spirit. Just believe the scripture.

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, 10 Moreover the Lord spake again unto Ahaz, saying, 11 Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. 12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord. 13 And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. 16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

and as it is written in Matthew, 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The problem with protesters is they are so used to protesting they don't know when to stop and hear the Holy Spirit.

Won't grieve you any further, af_vet-1981. But careful slinging around phrases from Scripture you plainly do not understand.
