Pastor Joel Osteen to Oprah: "I Can't Be A Big Blessing To People If I'm Poor & Broke"
Townhall.com ^ | Jan 09, 2012 | Greg Hengler

I don't know where or how to begin, so since Townhall is a secular website with many Christian viewers, I will simply post a couple pieces of scripture--one for each comment, although there are multiple choice Bible verses contrasting what Osteen personally believes:

OSTEEN: "I don't know who would say that you're not supposed to, you know, leave your children better than they were before."

GOD: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'--which is the first commandment with a promise--'that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.' Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:1-4)

OSTEEN: "There's a belief that you're supposed to suffer more and be poor and to show your humility. I just, I don't see the Bible that way."

GOD: "This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials. Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold – gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away – and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." (1 Peter 1:6-7)

As far as what God says about how we bless people and what we bless them with, God asks us to bless people with eternal gifts--namely, Him, and not earthly ones--regardless of our mental, physical, or monetary state:

GOD: "But He [God] said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

Parting note: Belief in God, Jesus, and His Word is worthless if you do not love and obey Him. Satan believes all these things but doesn't love Him nor follow His commands.

So, what Saint Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 11:20-27 should be taken to mean that Paul and others who traveled with him WERE NOT blessings to the people?

This idiot and his followers seem to think that an abundant life is somehow related to wealth.

Why can’t people identify a used car salesman when they see them?

He doesn’t even believe what he says. None of the TV preachers do, he’s just the most obvious about it.

Lots of people are big blessings who don’t have any money. Mother Theresa was

And, stating the obvious, so was Jesus Christ. Our biggest blessing.

Since you appear to be a fan of Osteen would you care to respond to this?

Sounds like a pretty weak faith. Although needing to be rich to keep your confidence up is still better than needing to be proud. And to tell the truth, how many even sincere Christians, hit by the threat of serious poverty for the first time, will just place the burden on the Lord and continue on without skipping a beat?

Well, Vision is also a fan of Chambers, who pushes things in the austerity direction, sometimes to a fault.

Sometimes it’s possible to accept the good and decline the evil through multiple channels, and thereby still benefit. I am not going to wear myself out trying to damn any unbalanced Christian.

Jesus and for that matter several of the apostles I think had very small Morgan Stanley investment portfolios.

This is a danger of any preaching position. If you voice something well, evil angels can temporarily coax you into thinking that it was your proclamation that caused it to be. Of course that thought lasts only until you fall on your face.

If Osteen went financially bust, he might discover that Jesus still was faithful to him. I don’t wish him evil, of course.

You have to be kidding me. Olsteen’s bible is his checkbook and his altar—the counting table.

$40 million
Osteen’s net worth is approximately $40 million, and he and his wife live in a $10.5 million mansion in River Oaks, Texas.

Matthew 19:21 American Standard Version

21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that which thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

23 And Jesus said unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, It is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mark 10:21American Standard Version

21 And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

Luke 18:22American Standard Version

22 And when Jesus heard it, he said unto him, One thing thou lackest yet: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

23 But when he heard these things, he became exceeding sorrowful; for he was very rich.

24 And Jesus seeing him said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

Truth in two simple sentences darkangel82. He is very much a new age guru with a mattering of bible thrown in. Just enough to get his masses in line and swooning over his drivel.

My mom, bless her heart, likes to listen to him. My sister and I hammered her with the fact that there is no such thing as a prosperity doctrine in the bible. Do I think God wants us all to be poor and miserable? Absolutely not, but in all honesty, I have seen those who have nothing shine the light more than those like Osteen.
