When Catholics Are Less Catholic Than Non-Catholics

A new poll shows the Catholic "faithful" are far from it

The Catholic Church does not settle doctrinal questions by majority vote. And since surveys of Catholic opinion usually record the answers of any respondents who identify themselves as Catholics, we don’t have many reliable indications of what faithful, practicing Catholics think, anyway.

Nevertheless, sometimes a poll provides results that are interesting in themselves, even if they don’t offer an accurate measure of authentic Catholic opinion. This survey from the Saint Leo College Polling Institute is one example.

According to the Saint Leo poll, Catholic Americans believe, by a whopping 68-18% margin (with 14% undecided) that Catholics who are divorced and remarried should be admitted to Communion. At a similarly overwhelming rate (66-21) they think the Church should accept artificial contraception. A solid voting majority (50-33) would drop the ban on extra-marital sex as well. And by a slight plurality, they would accept same-sex marriages, too.

I know, I know. You’ve seen this sort of poll before. No doubt you’ll see many more such surveys in the coming year. You could (and should) wonder how the questions were worded and how the results were recorded. Above all you should wonder about the sample. If the same questions were addressed to practicing Catholics, the results would be very different. But you know all that; these are familiar arguments.

What makes this particular St. Leo survey so interesting is the fact that the answers are broken into two categories: the responses from Catholics and those from non-Catholics. In every case, the answers from non-Catholics are substantially closer to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

LOL, I still have my sense of humor. I laughed when I saw your post. It's actually very funny!

Ever see that movie "The Lion King"? You know when the hyeninas are teasing Scar? They keep saying in an exaggerated whisper "Mustafa! Mustafa!" They end up scareing themselves.

That is how it is here on FR "Catholic!, Catholic!" ROFLMAO! If I can't have fun, what's the point? ()}:0)

No, I never saw the movie The Lion King.

But as for all fear thing which you imagine is in others --- if I'm understanding the concept you seem to be trying to sell -- I think you have who is who more backwards than not.

Maybe! But like I said. I don't really care. I know what's, what and no anonymous poster is going to “save” me from being Catholic. So it's entertainment, mostly.

Are you new here? There are lots of them that still proclaim my Church to be the Whore of Babylon. Probably need to update the geography on that, but whatever. I am not sure what they are trying to do. But watch the threads that have anything at all to do with Catholicism. You will see. They are not all here yet. They parse, they dice and slice every little thing we say. They complain to the mods if we fight back.

You really should watch the "Lion King", it is really a very good movie.

Am I new here you ask?

That must have been a rhetorical question...

Then among other things (pardon me while I slice and dice, lol) you said;

Now -- you are not so sure?

See now you are getting snarky when I was merely pointing out, that I don't know what they are trying to do. They claim they are trying to save us from worshiping idols etc. I really don't care and I am not crying.

Religious persecution has a long history and I hardly consider this snipping back and forth on FR to be persecution. I just weigh in to correct the errors that people claim that we have. Most of the time they have no idea what we actually believe, they just think they do.

If you care to peruse other religious threads that have nothing to do with Catholicism, you will see that my name does not appear on them.

When I asked you if you were new, you could be new to the religious forums and not new to the site. After all usually we would be fighting over candidates rather than Bishops. But I think everyone is pretty fed up with the GOP. Nothing they do is really defensible.

There are many Catholics here who still proclaim non-Catholic Christians are heretics and call for their elimination, and long for the return of the Inquisition.

It’s also not me. It’s also not the majority of Catholics. It’s crazy for anyone to call for a present day return to the violent “elimination” of non-Catholic Christians.

No one of any importance in Catholicism is suggesting that. Only nutjobs on the Internet. That’s just a fact.

Quite frankly I find it difficult to believe anyone on FR suggests it would be or was ever “good” to kill Protestants/ non-Catholic Christians. “Understandable” maybe given the history and culture of the time, but objectively good? Never. (Because merely understanding the motivations for an act is not the same as condoning it) I find it nearly incredulous to believe anyone could seriously suggest such acts were “good” and still consider themselves a Catholic.

It seems to me there must be a misunderstanding somewhere. Probably on both “sides” that’s usually the case anyway for most disagreements. (IMO)

But maybe there are such nutjobs here. If so they aren’t real Catholics and should be zotted, to be as blunt as I can.
