Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

>>Not if you die after sinning but before Confession. Then, you go to HELL for all ETERNITY.<<

Wow, Catholics live a risky guilt ridden life! Have they not heard that Jesus is our advocate and has imputed His righteousness to us?

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Our sins have been forgiven. All of them.

James 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

God knows that the sin nature of this body is still with us. Jesus is our advocate and stands in the gap for us.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Paul explains that while we are in this body there is a conflict between body and spirit. It's God who delivers us. He looks at our spirit knowing that while in this body we are still imperfect. But spiritually we have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus.

Romans 7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

True believers can rest assured that if they put their full faith and trust in Christ and not in themselves He is faithful to forgive. When we confess our sins we confess all of our sins known and unknown. No one can know every sin they have committed. The fear that Catholics seem to have is unfounded. God knows our sins and He has already forgiven us.

What kind of a waste of bandwidth is this? I hope you are a monthly donor.

Judas Iscariot once had a similar thought.

It is under Settings, Language and Inputs on my tablet; I have similar issues on the smart phone, but not as egregious.

>>if He, Jesus (God), made the law, He certainly could change it..<<

But He didn't.

Acts 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

>>did you ever eat a medium rare steak....thought so.<<

Evidently you are unfamiliar with the process of slaughter. The blood is drained from the animal. What you are seeing in a rare steak is body fluids. The blood part of an animal consists of much more the some red corpuscles left in muscle tissue.

Romans 5:18-21

Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:1-4

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

>>when we refer to the early church let's at least include the first 400 or so years.<<

No let's not. We know that before John died most of the "churches" had already strayed. The first three chapters in Revelation clearly point that out. The "first 400 or so" is totally unreliable.

>>Never forget that we've told you these truths over and over here.<<

Catholics only repeat the deception from the Catholic Church they have fallen for. What the Catholic Church teaches has little to do with truth.

What the Muslims do is a far cry from what Paul was saying. Muslims don't even profess to worship an “unknown god”. In the Quran they have clearly described the attributes of the god they serve. That god is clearly not the one true God. I will repeat. The failure of the Catholic Church to discern the difference is clear indication they do not function with the guidence of the Holy Spirit.

This thread, although cyclical and long, has been instructive to me into the results of the teachings and doctrines of the RCC.

For me, some responses from RCs have been kind; most have minimal informative value in their repetitions. And that’s the point I derived from post #1818.

I think the “subtlety” of my post will be lost on some.

Maybe I should have put it on a cereal box...

>>There are several other posters here on FR who can give you a better understanding of those Aramaic terms Jesus actually used there when addressing Peter,<<

The Holy Spirit had the New Testament written in Greek, not Aramaic for a reason. The language the Holy Spirit chose made the distinction. Why do you question the Holy Spirit??

The Catholic Church cannot possibly be the assembly Christ started. The self admitted inclusion of pagan practices totally eliminates any possibility of that religion being the body of Christ.

So then you are saying that Elsie never says the Lord's prayer? Are you reading his mind or do you think you are clairvoyant?

And when mentioning another freeper we are to include a ping to them.

Catholics can't even descern that Muslims serve a different god. How can they be expected to descern who Jesus really is?

Not according to God's word. Supercessionism can be debunked easily and has been.

Is it in one of the books Catholics claim Martin Luther threw out?

Now...True Story!

A group of Catholics from my unit (including a coworker) in Germany went to an event in Worms, Germany, that honored Martin Luther.

My coworker came to me after-wards and said “I thought he was black!”

In Matthew 3:8 Jesus was talking to Pharisees who wanted babized. He called the a brood of vipers because they thought that keeping the law gave them salvation. Are Catholics Pharisees?

Penance is punishment. Repentance is "turning away from. Christ bore the punishment for our sins so that we wouldn't have to.

1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

We have been set free from those sins.

Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Why don't Catholics believe what God says?
