Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

” I do not have the patience of a saint and thus my charity well is running dry. Although some of my Catholic brothers and sisters here on the RF have showed enormous patience and charity in the face of the continual protestant onslaught of lies, half-truths, and calumnies. “

If Catholics would be in a vibrant personal relationship with Christ and have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, they would find all the strength they need.

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

Catholics need to turn to Jesus and trust HIM instead of the Catholic church and Mary sometime.

“The irony of the rcc wanting so badly to be recognized as the ones who provided the bible are usually the first ones to slam non catholics for solely using said bible. “

The word “ hypocrisy” comes to mind......

And yes, I "speak" a wee bit of Koine, but modern Greek ain't the same animal, so no, none of that. Though I'm not against it. Just a time and activity problem.

I know a little Greek, too. He runs a gyro shop on Main Street. ;o)

You mentioned an important point to remember in discussing translations. Words evolve. Their meaning over time can change. We see this even in our own founding documents and the different way English is spoken and written in only a few hundred years. Considering Koine Greek is THOUSANDS of years old, it's no wonder that translations have to keep up.

I remember in Bible college when I learned about tenses in Greek and how a single English word translated from the Greek really had a much deeper meaning than the English word could convey. An example was the word "never" as it was used in John 10:28. Jesus said "they shall never perish". That one word in the Greek actually meant, "no, not, never; at any time, at any place, for any reason; whether male, female or neuter; perpetually, eternally" perish. WOW! It was enlightening to say the least. Some theologians devote their lives to textual criticism and translations. There is enough of a peer review process that I don't think anyone would get away with skewing Divine revelation for very long.

For a moment I was concerned that support meant, "Join Pastor Hagee and CUFI or you're an anti-Semite.

No you didn't. That's merely your idea of a cute response. Instead it is a somewhat bitter unprovable and uninformed accusation against me.

It has been observed previously that you do not respond to complete posts but rather to just words and phrases in FR posts. Less than honest and definitely non-persuasive.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

I understand your comments to mean you don't believe the texts we have are true copies of the holy scriptures. That is a direct contradiction of the Fundamentalist position, as well as the Orthodox Jewish position. It exposes one of the problems with Sola Scriptura when you admit you don't really have "The Bible" but only the best Bible money can buy, so to speak.

It seems to me you have a problem with this text; you may not know if it is accurate or not; did it only guarantee the Hebrew scriptures would be preserved, every jot and every tittle ? 2 Timothy and 2 Peter would then apply to the Tenach with a looser interpretation that Paul's writings were like other Tenach scriptures; this would be untenable in my view, most especially with the words of Jesus in the Gospels and Revelation. No, I see a huge problem for Sola Scriptura when you confess you don't have the genuine Bible, but it is getting better as scholarship improves.

Which books that you say Protestants removed contain teaching of the apostles?

>>Unless you demonstrate that something WAS a tradition at the time of the Apostles, it was not Apostolic Tradition. Until you demonstrate that, you have not answered the question.<<

Exactly! And all they are left with is faith in men relying on word of mouth passed through untold generations. Even secular laws understand that to be unreliable.

My response was succinct. And in that response there was much said. You made a generalization about a "lack of support" for Israel on the part of the Roman Catholic Church. A statement for which no proof was provided.

And unlike protestants, I do not think I can buy my way into Heaven by aligning myself with the State of Israel. Nor am I interested in pleasuring myself by divining the eschatology of same.

It has been observed previously that you do not respond to complete posts but rather to just words and phrases in FR posts. Less than honest and definitely non-persuasive.

I responded to your posts. You didn't like the answer you received. Not my problem.

A church has nothing to do with salvation. No where in the Bible does it say, be a church member and you will be saved. Jesus is all we need. Period.

My response was succinct.

No, you are inaccurate in your self-assessment.

You repeatedly evade direct questions and reply to what you were not asked...as leftists are trained to do. You know, regular bully tactics.

Would have been better if you'd passed giving your "response" and not replied disingenuously. There's more intellectual honesty in that.

You still are not making a convincing case for the RCC's validity as the one true church of Jesus Christ. Certainly not a compelling case.
