Question from a "19 Kids and Counting" fan on Facebook: How have you taught your daughters about modesty

My daughters are the second generation of modest dressing in this family. They've grown up being dressed modestly, and in clothes that are definitely more feminine apparel.

Are you saying that the New Testament doesn’t require at least general standards of holiness?

Yeah, it's getting harder and harder any more to tell the difference. I think a lot of people can't afford to dress like we did years ago, even those of us who didn't shop at places like Nieman Marcus and Nordstrum's.

I'm really sloppy lately so I have not room to criticize anyone unless the neck is too low and crack shows from pants too low. I haven't gotten that bad yet.

Who decides? I don't worry a whit about what somebody is wearing. Don't notice. Don't care. So i don't get in the tongue wagging club.

A personal walk with Jesus will correct some things in time. Or not. Short of showing up in stripper gear and pole dancing in a pew...

I can tell from your post you are just dying to get everything neatly defined to make it easier for everybody.

Your family picture is beautiful! My condolences, Aliska, on the loss of your son. How tragic...

That being said, there is nothing more alluring to a proper Christian gentleman than a modestly dressed beautiful woman who is not advertising her tail to the highest bidder.

That’s a fact Jack!

Thank you so much. I didn't know it existed until my sister sent it to me and I don't remember the exact occasion. We were divorced shortly after that, I raised the 3 of them alone, and never remarried.

As to my son, I never imagined it would come to that with him. At least we aren't left wondering why or feeling guilty or that it was our fault in some way (his 2 sisters and me). I do wish we'd been able to do more.

Usually I don't post something so personal but maybe after all these years, it's nice to have (younger) faces for Aliska and her family.

About jeans, I buy mine from qvc. Theirs are modest that is no low rise in the back but not looking like the “mom” jeans. Also the price is affordable. I can’t imagine paying over $40 for a pair of jeans.
Sounds like you've got it all under control. You CAN'T have a low rise in the back or when you bend over to garden or pick up something (NOT your teeth!) you'd look like a female "BUBBA" with his butt crack showing. :o)

I don't wear jeans anymore, even to garden. I wear LL Bean slacks, elastic band. SO much more comfortable. Hard to keep my big, fat pellet gun in the waistband though. I have to put it down to garden. Darn crows and ravens!

=========================================

My dad would always comment if my sister’s dresses showed her knees. In church I see women wearing dresses fit for a nightclub and skin tight jeans. I know the ushers want to put a large scarf over these women legs when they sit down!
Lol. Sounds like our dads were cut from the same bolt of cloth. He didn't even let me wear make-up until I was 16!
The minister of your church should make an announcement about proper dress in the bulletin, then on the pulpit, then to the girls/women offending. That CANNOT be tolerated in the house of the Lord.
It's NOT the job of the ushers to police the erring females. It's the job of the MINISTER. It's his church and people would listen to HIM.

I am aware. His years of abusing authority have caught up with him. That somebody would abuse authority does not surprise me. That a sick twisted phclsychological mess like him would groom underage girls for weird sexual gratification does nor surprise me. That thousands venerated and followed that man with his endless lists of instructions. That surprises me.

That is the sad part. So many good biblical principle's. I have very good friends who played a huge part in bringing Bill down.

What good biblical principles? The umbrella? He just made things up. Quoted a menagerie of unrelated scriptures and called it non negotiable. Weak.

What a beautiful family. I’m sorry you later suffered such pain through your divorce and the loss of your son.

Thank you EDINVA, many crosses to bear for me and our FReeper FRiends. So many here have such heavy burdens. He was a bright sharp little boy which maybe doesn’t come out in the picture. Someday somewhere I hope and pray God will heal all my wounds (and my whole family) and I can be a help in healing others through intercession. That’s about all I do now. Intercede for people I hear about and on the news, don’t know if it does any good but keep at it anyway.

LLbean are just as good as the pants I get from qvc. I got some jackets from LLBean but don’t like that plus size cost more which is something QVC doesn’t do, charge more for size 14 and up.

Our church used to have women dressing more modestly but in the last decade I’ve noticed a change. I’ve visited a church with more younger members and saw some women show up in shorts. That’s just wrong imo. Long maxi dresses are cute and comfortable. And not a distraction either.

imho it appears Mrs. Duggar only addresses the outward manifestation of modesty for her daughters. I’ve never heard of her addressing this issue regarding her sons. All her claims her “christian” or “biblical” . What part of biblical is she referring to? Old Testament? New Testament?

It is her choice to dress her children as she sees fit but this constant referring this issue re: her daughters is simply a one-sided argument. Maybe it’s the msm that twists her words or doesn’t want to “get into the details” preferring to capitalize on how “odd” her formula is compared to main stream society as many know it. It makes for better selling points in the product (news) that is selling and essentially creates a stigma (going against main stream culture) doesn’t it? MSM makes them look odd and weird but they are not.

The only problem I have with Mrs. Duggar is that obviously she has not biblically backed up her dress code . Does she quote Old or New Testament? If I am wrong then I stand corrected

As a lifelong Catholic raised in the 50’s by devout Catholic parents we had standards for dress. We were taught modesty of dress by my parents but also were taught modesty of character, too, which had nothing to do with any of the teachings of the Church, but you also must remember people are shaped by their culture(s),too. To me it all depends on how you define your own culture and want to present yourself.

First impressions are valuable as far as clothing goes and people make judgements about you by what you wear.

Maybe my parents were more conservative than I thought teaching us the value of modesty but way back in the time machine when I was in my mid 20’s I quietly embraced a concept of Orthodox Judaism named “tznius” or “tzniut”.

It wasn’t something I advertised in my Catholic family & it never went noticed. My ex-husband was very comfortable with all of it;yet I am not a convert to judaism.

I still am this way after 30 or so years and all my daughters lead by example.

It’s beyond clothing and outward appearances.

The part of the bible she refers to is the entire Book of Bill Gothard. That’s just after The Book of Revelation in the NKJ edition.

LOL! Gothard’s interpretation of anything and all ... frankly I had no idea they followed this crackpot.

I call him a grifter because eventually he made money off of his opinions correct? You won’t find his personal net worth on the internet but his Institute lost a money within the past few years. He’s also been in legal trouble for sexual harassment. He’s no better than Joel Osteen.

If the Duggars have found that his “system” worked for them then more power to them. I’ve nothing against Christian conservatives and have resented ever since that comment made a few years ago by Obama about “people clinging to their guns and Bibles”. (he is so wrong on so many levels it’s horrendous).

I’m going to go eat some chocolate!! lol

I have heard the figure 63 million as the value of his ministry. But that has probably dropped some. But his assets include lots of property so maybe not.

Advocating a burka would be an attempt to codify that which has not been codified within the scriptures. The Bible gives two standards: dress modestly and don’t wear the clothing of another sex. That’s all. How do we achieve what is modest? By “walking in the Spirit” so that we do not “fulfill the lusts of the flesh.”

Will everyone achieve the same consensus? No. But one person saying that they are “walking in the Spirit” and someone else is not is not for them to say.

Yes, there are some who may be new to the faith and still dress inappropriately (to others), but God did not call those others to be the “Spirit” that the person (new to the faith) needs to listen to. Minus walking in the Spirit, you can end up with a preacher telling others what they need to do based upon the preacher’s convictions.
