Required. Never have been required in my church. But we are northern Congregationalists. We barely say hello to each other.

If tithing is strictly old testament, what about adultery or murder?

“I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed. Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them. Now return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“But you ask, ‘How can we return when we have never gone away?’

“Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me!

“But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat you?’

“You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

--Malachi 3:6-12, NLT

I'll go with that.

"If tithes preceded the Law, and no curse is listed if Abraham did not pay tithes to Melchizedek, then it would seem that the curse is limited strictly to the Law (Old Covenant) and not under the New Covenant. "

Aren't you forgeting what Jesus said about the law and the prophets?

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Matthew 5:17&18

At my Catholic parish, tithing of net (not gross) income is strongly encouraged but not required. Most of the other parishes I’ve attended over the years have had no policy on tithing.

What about Matthew 6?

Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6;16-18 “Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you”.

There is no mention of tithes in the New Covenant. Under the Old Covenant the Pharisees would pay the tithe (even of their spice gardens) then the rest was theirs to do with as they pleased.
Under the New Covenant, it all belongs to God - we are responsible to God for everything that we spend.

Much more demanding than a “mere” tithe, I would say!

Advocating tithing as a required duty of Christians is ridiculous. Giving is clearly taught in the New Testament as a voluntary privilege with no specific amount or percentage ever mentioned (in the context of church giving). There are blessings associated with giving in the New Testament. There are no punishments or curses taught for not giving, other than a missed opportunity or blessing.

This is a subject which many heretical TV preachers have twisted into the lie that God’s gifts can be bought with money and that giving makes God our debtor. Many unbelievers have been turned away from the gospel message by these false teachers because the unbelievers get the impression that Christianity is just a money-making scam.

The law no longer binds us for salvation.

The Bible calls salvation a free gift from God.

Here's the deal. If someone gives you a free gift, a very valuable, expensive gift, would you not want to do something for them?

At the very least you wouldn't want to do something to hurt or offend them.

Malachi 3 is pretty blunt on God's "feelings" about this subject.

in Acts, it was decided that Christians didn't have to follow all the petty rules except or rules about sexual ethics and eating meat that had been properly bled.

tithing was not a requirement, but it was a church rule, made by men, but not a rule of God based on God's dictation. Since the church did most of the social welfare for 1800 years, tithing made sense but it was a tax, not a biblical requirement.

Unlike the Koran, God only gave ten commandments himself, but inspired men to make rules according to the local situation. Jesus said "What you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, what you lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. This was interpreted that local bishops/pastors could make rules to help their people, and then change them later. So most of the health rules and dress rules were ignored in the church until some literalists found them

First, second and third tithe were all required for getting into the Kingdom of God in the church I used to belong to. What a guilt trip that was.

Then I found a new church up the road that was ok until the preacher told us that Gawd required us to tithe which meant giving 10% of gross to his church. They would pass the basket for every possible meeting they had including Christmas and Easter services. I quit that one right after that.

I now attend a church that doesn’t ever take up a collection ever. They have a box in the back and you can give what you want to. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t.

In a word, no. However, if you follow Christ, you will sacrifice all you have to his will and, sometimes, that means money. Personally, I never give to organizations. I give to needs I see all around me.

I heard one of the big name radio preachers talk about this several years ago (I think it was David Jeremiah but not sure). He said the 10% tithe is not a requirement today - the Spirit will lead us as to the amount. So as long as you are obedient to the Spirit you are OK. I have followed this for many years now. We have been giving more than 10% net, less than gross.
