The time for happy-clappy, lighthearted engagement of our culture may be nearing an end. Sometimes it takes a while to understand that what used to work no longer works. Let me get more specific.
Decades ago the Al Smith Dinner was a time for Republicans and Democrats to bury the hatchet (even if only temporarily) and come together to raise money for the poor and to emphasize what unites us rather than what divides us. But in the old days the death of 50 million infants was not what divided us. We were divided about lesser things such as how much of the budget should go to defense and how much to social spending. Reasonable men might differ over that.
But now we are being asked to raise toasts and to enjoy a night of frivolity with those who think it is acceptable to abort children by the millions each year, with those who think anal sex is to be celebrated as an expression of love and that LGBTQIA (I=intersexual, A= Asexual) is actually a form of sanity to which we should tip our hat, and with those who stand four-square against us over religious liberty.
Now the St. Patricks Parade is becoming of parade of disorder, chaos, and fake unity. Lets be honest: St. Patricks Day nationally has become a disgraceful display of drunkenness and foolishness in the middle of Lent that more often embarrasses the memory of Patrick than honors it.
In New York City in particular, the parade is devolving into a farcical and hateful ridicule of the faith that St. Patrick preached.
Its time to cancel the St. Patricks Day Parade and the Al Smith Dinner and all the other Catholic traditions that have been hijacked by the world. Better for Catholics to enter their churches and get down on their knees on St. Patricks Day to pray in reparation for the foolishness, and to pray for this confused world to return to its senses. Lets do adoration and pray the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet unceasingly for this poor old world.
But dont go to the parade; stay away from the Al Smith Dinner and all that old school stuff that hangs on in a darkened world. And as for St Patricks Day, its time to stop wearin the green and instead take up the purple of Lent and mean it. Enough of the celebration of stupidity, frivolity, and drunkenness that St Paddys day has become. We need penance now, not foolishness. We dont need parades and dinner with people who scoff at our teachings, insist we compromise, use us for publicity, and make money off of us. Were being played for (and are?) fools.
End the St Patricks parade. End the Al Smith Dinner and all other such compromised events. Enough now, back to Church! Wear the purple of Lent and if there is going to be a procession, let it be Eucharistic and penitential for the sins of this age.
For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world!
How say you?
Thank you all for your long and thoughtful replies. You have all given me much to think about and pray about.
You are all right - I should have his back on this. He’s one of the most stubborn atheists you could ever meet though, even though he has had actual proof of the Lord’s love and protection. Several times now.
We’ll talk. That much is certain. If it’ll do any good, I don’t know. Dreading it, too - for the first time in his life he’s happy. He’s one of the very few people who is in both my morning and evening prayers.
Any suggestions on how to approach it? Head on is going to leave me with a sore head and not much more.
His diocese pulled his article:

Wonder if Msgr. Pope will now be defrocked and banished to South Africa?!?
We'll see if he posts something tonight.
I looked at comments on the post a while ago and he was getting a lot of threats from homosexuals.
So while I think he may have pulled the blog post because of the tenor of the comments, it is entirely possible that one of Wuerl's squishy friends may have had something to do with it.
One less opportunity for Cardinal Dolan to booze and schmooze.
I predict he will stay.
I am shocked that the attacks from the gay agenda crowd was that bad.
Things are not looking good for this country.
My wife is catholic and has no use for Dolan.I think he is a sell out trying to be PC. I have no use for any queer as they break God’s law.
Agree. We must return to God’s law. We must be very careful with man making so many laws to silence Christianity in this country while tolerating and even promoting Islam. We have watched this admin refuse to enforce certain laws of ours they do not like and impose new ones we never approved.
When anyone like ND or the diocese of NY invites the hero of Benghazi to dinner they are honoring a person who believes it is ok to let a baby born after a “failed abortion” attempt to die of neglect. And sitting and laughing with him. What could be so funny or important to ignore those beliefs?
This is who some in the church would and have honored.
I guess of Pelousy and Kerry can receive communion then anything is possible.
Maybe, maybe not. Seems like the only time the dinner made the papers was when one politician used it to score cheap points against the other.
“Homosexuals always want approval of their perversion” - ex-gay guy in our Bible Study said, “Every morning, every gay guy wakes up KNOWING it is wrong.” That, I believe, is why the ‘it’s ok’ yelling is so loud. Squawking louder means you have hit your target squarely.
Glad you got this before it got taken down by the Archdiocese.
You know what else is gone? The Archdiocese of New York’s Facebook page. It was there earlier today...
Regards,
YES! I was going to respond to the disdain of “drunkenness” and so on with the endless boasting and bragging about Irishness. (BTW, IIUC, real Irish do not “celebrate” being Irish for this - they worship at Mass for St. Patrick. Neither do they eat corn beef/cabbage.)
I don’t mind if people want to have parades, festivals for their nationality. But it should be EVERYONE, not just Irish, who have festivals that are celebrated nationally and noted on every damn newscast. Who else gets to blow-hard chest-beat all the time about a certain “holiday” in terms of how great they are, how everyone wants to be, how we should kiss them, etc, with big parades everywhere and national coverage including the simple recognition of “Irish Day”? No one. (Please don’t mention “Columbus Day” because in my world, I never heard of Italians celebrating it as if it is theirs until a few years ago and I’m 45. Certainly never appeared even on local TV or national.)
No, even without queers “St. Patrick’s Day” is really nothing more than a “see we really are great, believe me!” day for 1 single set of people.
But yes, if you’re going to keep it, please eliminate the queers from it.
Maybe they have gotten too many negative messages on Facebook. Hmmm.
Or Wuerl himself.
The whole thing got too close to the issue of Nancy Pelosi’s reception of Communion, is what I suspect. No way is Wuerl going to allow discussion of that.
To “forgive” does not mean “invite him to dinner and slobber all over his shoes.” To “forgive” does not mean “invite to your most famous university and give him an honorary degree.”
Don’t worry. It’s not up to you whether a friend of yours goes to hell or not. So nobody’s asking YOU to “consign” a friend to hell. Maybe your gay friend will go to heaven, because he’s invincibly ignorant. Maybe your mother is in hell because of a sin you know nothing about. Your opinion of any person simply doesn’t matter.
That doesn’t change the truth on iota. It is a gross distortion of the gospel to say that we must “forgive” Obama, and therefore must shower him with honors and hospitality and praise—which is what creeps like Dolan keep doing.
O’Connor was great on public statements. Behind the scenes, he did nothing to clean up the archdiocese’s huge problem of gay priests.
Of course, that’s a better record than Dolan is racking up. The only priests he disciplines and rakes over the coals are Catholics.
Msgr. Pope has control over the comments. No need to pull the article on that account.
No doubt about it. Wuerl forced Pope to pull the article, and for two reasons:
1) Dolan blew a gasket.
2) Wuerl doesn’t want any discussion of Pelosi, Biden, and other Surreal Catholics’ reception of Communion. Wuerl is determined to keep giving pro-aborts Communion, if he knows what’s good for him.
He’s a friend.
I owe him my arm to hold him out of the pit, at least.
