It is commonly supposed that if God can't do absolutely anything and everything, then He isn't all-powerful. Yet Scripture teaches there are some things even God cannot do, though it affirms in countless places that He is, nonetheless, almighty.
Here is a list of things the Bible says outright, or by necessary implication, God cannot do:
1. Lie (or do anything else immoral)Titus 1:2
2. Deny Himself (i.e., do anything out of character)2 Timothy 2:13
3. Remit/forgive sins without the shedding of blood (i.e., taking of life)Hebrews 9:22
4. Avoid going to Calvary if man is to have hope of forgivenessMatthew 26:39
5. Pardon someone who will not repent/believe2 Peter 3:9
6. Remain righteous by passing over sins and never requiring blood atonementRomans 3:25-26
7. Be tempted by evilJames 1:13
Can you add to the list?
Can you compose a definition of almighty more consonant with what the Bible says God can and cannot do?
Can you think of reasons why this might be more than an academic exercise or a needless distinction?
Is this humor?
RE: Is this humor?
Easy to answer...
Is it scriptural?
If so, why would it be humor?
RE: 2-6 are nonsense. God can do it. He chooses not to.
Can you explain to us how God can pardon an unrepentant sinner without compromising His holiness? (See Number 5).
Fail.
God does not predict the future or make it happen. To God there is no future or past. God is outside of time. When He says that something will happen it is because it has.
As I understand it, the original Hebrew word used for “helper” was also used as “completer.” In other words it was someone who would “complete” Adam or “make him whole.”
For God to allow Adam to assign the names of the animals is to ratify Adam’s superiority over the animals. Although Adam is a created being, just as the animals are, he is not “just another animal.”
God “spoke” the animals into being.
God took dust from creation, formed Adam with His own hands and “breathed His breath” into Adams nostrils.
(but i do believe it was a 1-iron)
It just seems like satire/humor to be joking about God.
Sure He can, and did. God the Son came to us in the flesh, yet His divinity was unaffected. As the saying goes, He was fully God and fully man.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
He cannot become a man.
Read the Gospel according to John. Then read Hebrews.
God can do all things. Several of the things on this list are not true.
“I call my buddy mate a lot. He knows that I have no sexual desire for him.”
I can only assume you’re just being facetious now, since your original comment specifically used the phrase “desirable as a mate”, which removes any ambiguity as to how you were using the word.
God cannot have a mother because he is self-existent.
Eh, same order of magnitude. ;-)
God commits evil
Jer_18:8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
Jer_18:10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.
Jer_26:3 If so be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings.
Jer_26:13 Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will repent him of the evil that he hath pronounced against you.
Jer_42:10 If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
RE: God can do all things. Several of the things on this list are not true.
Can you elaborate? Please cite one or two on the list and explain.
RE: Read the Gospel according to John. Then read Hebrews.
Useless to cite the New Testament on POWERSBOOTHEFAN, I suspect he/she is Jewish and only accepts the Old Testament ( and only his/her interpretation of it ).
