From another article:

**Several of those lesser-known men who played key roles in the creation of the United States of America were Catholics. Chief among them were three members of the Carroll family of Maryland: Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence; his cousin Daniel Carroll; and Daniel Carroll’s brother John Carroll, who became America’s first Catholic bishop.**

Thank you for that. I just returned from Baltimore (baseball trip with church group) and we went to mass at the Baltimore Basilica which was the first Catholic Cathedral in the U.S. and from of the pamphlets that the usher gave us contained this along with a lot of other facts:

1789: November 6 Pope Pius VI creates the Diocese of Baltimore and appoints John Carroll the First Bishop of the United States of America.

1791 November 7-10 The Synod of Baltimore, the first formal meeting of the U.S. Catholic Church, is held at Saint Peter Pro-Cathedral on Saratoga Street.

1884 November 9-December 7 The Third Plenary Council, the largest meeting of Catholic Bishops held outside of Rome since the Council of Trent, formulates the famous Baltimore Catechism, which was in use until the 1970's.

Interesting stuff for us Catholics.
