As has been mentioned a lot lately due to the Hobby Lobby decision, the Supreme Court is made up of six Roman Catholics and three Jews. I have been meaning to post about this for awhile and it seems like an appropriate time to.
For me, as an evangelical, I've found it increasingly troubling that all five conservative-voting justices are Roman Catholic. My belief on it is that the trend to select Roman Catholics as the "conservative" pick seems to come from the sense that they are, overall, less likely to strictly follow God's Word than would be an evangelical and to be more receptive to the opinions of man. The trend in politics in recent years is for evangelicals and more conservative Roman Catholics (and mainline Protestants and Jews) to band together, which is appropriate, but the trend seems to have gone too far in that evangelicals are being influenced to overlook and forget about the true and significant differences between evangelical belief and that of Roman Catholicism. Something has gone wrong when five Roman Catholics represent conservative Christians on the Supreme Court.
Blatantly ignorant. There is no test for religion. In not one case has the nominee’s religion played a part in their confirmation.
John Roberts' insane "It's a Tax," vote on the Affordable Care Act, reinforces your thinking
Don’t really see the issue. Would this not be down to the fact that more Catholics go into law than Evangelicals?
It has been pointed out often how many Jews are in congress (Jews in the loosest sense of the word) compared to the general population. Its just that more Jews decide to go into politics.
My concern is whether a justice is an originalist and that their originalist interpretation is correct. If they are, they will vote in a pro-Christian way because the original constitution is pro-Christian.
“There’s no test for religion” is one of the most abused principles in public debates. Not long ago, the liberals were attacking Christian Republicans for being reluctant to support Mormon Romney, saying the same thing. Of course, they would not welcome a Bible-believing evangelical Christian, or, I imagine, a Scientologist or Satanist, or at this point, even an open atheist.
Candidate and nominee selection considers just such things as one’s religion. It’s no fluke what the Supreme Court make-up is.
“My belief on it is that the trend to select Roman Catholics as the “conservative” pick seems to come from the sense that they are, overall, less likely to strictly follow God’s Word than would be an evangelical and to be more receptive to the opinions of man.”
A Supreme Court judge is supposed to be following the rule of law - the Constitution, not his religious denomination. How strictly he interprets scripture is not relevant to the job. Any judge that puts his religious/political opinion before the clear words of the Constitution (as all liberals do) should be kicked out.
“Something has gone wrong when five Roman Catholics represent conservative Christians on the Supreme Court.”
As long as they follow the Constitution I do not care if they are Catholic, Jewish, or atheist. While I agree it would be nice to have a conservative evangelical or two on the bench, the four Catholics on it right now are doing great (Roberts with one giant exception), even Kennedy has been on a good streak recently.
I guess I don’t understand. Is your beef with Catholics? It sure as hell wasn’t Catholics that nominated any of the current SCOTUS squatters.
The Supreme Court is actually made up of 5 Catholics, 3 Jews and one person who doesn't believe in anything except what is politically correct.
Sonia Sotomayor does not believe in or practice the Catholic faith. She is strongly pro abortion among her other positions.
Would you be happier if the Catholics on the SC were liberal?
I want judges to rule by the Constitution, not by any religion, Christian or other. I don’t want a theocracy in the US, of any kind.
Any judge who would rule on a religious basis first when interpreting laws, would be better off on a court in Iran or Saudi Arabia, not here.
“I want judges to rule by the Constitution, not by any religion, Christian or other”
The Supreme Court judges rule by Constitution. The judges who have most consistently stood up for Constitutional principles are the Catholics on the court.
The idea that if someone is sincere in their faith, they are somehow incapable of ruling by the Constitution is simply ridiculous.
“The idea that if someone is sincere in their faith, they are somehow incapable of ruling by the Constitution is simply ridiculous.”
I never said that any of them did so. I know there are some here that most assuredly would want them to, and I was stating my firm opinion that I did not want that.

Bump for a voice of sanity. What’s that line about not establishing a state religion. Seems that some of the strict constitutional believers forgot about that.
Actually it’s a voice of beside-the-pointness and Captain Obviousness.
But I think your antipathy is worse than simply the idiocy your posts indicate.
This was a very inarticulate post that did not make your point, if any, clear.
“I was stating my firm opinion that I did not want that.”
I agree. I would not want that either.

So what do you envision as a possible solution? Evangelical pols blocking conservative Catholic SC nominations by Protestant Presidents or what? Evangelicals supporting presidential nominees that vow to recognize the true differences between Evangelicals or Catholics?
In any case, I’m pretty sure Clarence Thomas is a secret member of the order of Albino Monk Assassins.
