Changing Face of New York Jewry(Jews to become NYC GOP votiing block)

In 2012, the average New York Jew looks a little less like Jerry Seinfeld and a little more like Tevye the Milkman.

New York’s Jews are poorer, less educated and more religious than they were 10 years ago, according to a landmark new study of the city’s Jewish population.

They’re also less liberal: More than half of the Jews in New York City live in Orthodox or Russian-speaking homes, both of which lean heavily conservative.

The study, conducted by UJA-Federation of New York, counted 1.5 million Jews in New York City, Long Island and Westchester, up from 1.4 million just 10 years ago. That growth is almost entirely due to a huge surge in New York’s Orthodox population, which rose by more than 100,000 people over the past decade.

Related •N.Y. Jewish Population Grows to 1.5M: Study •U.S. Jewish Population Pegged at 6 Million •'The Era of the So-Called Jewish Vote Is Over' The numbers point to a seismic shift in what it means to be a New York Jew as Manhattan’s Jewish population shrinks and Brooklyn’s explodes, and as people disaffiliate from the more liberal Jewish denominations.

Source: UJA-Federation of New YorkIn the five boroughs of New York City itself, 40% of Jews currently identify as Orthodox.

The fast-shifting figures promise looming changes in how Jewish political power is wielded in New York, and in the relative influence of the city’s long-standing non-Orthodox institutions.

These trends are poised to accelerate. While one-third of New York-area Jews are Orthodox today, six out of 10 Jewish children in the New York area live in Orthodox homes. Hasidic children alone constitute 37% of the area’s Jewish children.

“We have a community that is large, that is growing, that is diverse and that is challenged by poverty, by elements of disengagement, and also strengthened by diversity, by growing areas of Jewish involvement,” said Steven M. Cohen, a leading sociologist of the Jewish community and one of the report’s three authors.

The $1.7 million study is the largest of its kind ever undertaken in the United States, according to its sponsors. Researchers conducted 6,000 telephone interviews with Jewish households, randomly selected using a variety of methods.

(This reporter’s mother sat on a 22-member advisory board that approved the design of the survey in the fall of 2010. She has had no involvement in the study over the past year and a half.)

The survey’s findings pose an array of major challenges to the city’s Jewish establishment. The survey found among New York Jews fast-rising levels of poverty that appear to be unparalleled in recent history. Researchers also found a steep drop in affiliation among non-Orthodox Jews, and low levels of support among Orthodox Jews for the institutions that the non-Orthodox have long dominated. The survey also identified demographic trends that could have consequences for how New York Jews’ political interests are defined.

Less Liberal

Taken together, New York City’s Orthodox and Russian-speaking Jewish communities comprise 56% of the city’s Jewish population.

The newfound dominance of those communities, both of which are more politically conservative than other Jewish groups, could challenge the notion that the New York Jewish vote is a liberal vote — or even a Democratic vote.

“The Russians are not Democrats, and the Hasidim are not necessarily Democrats,” said Hank Sheinkopf, a conservative Democratic political strategist. “When somebody figures out how to put the Russians and the ultra-Orthodox together they’re going to come up with an atomic bomb in Democratic politics in New York State.”

Yes, I think you almost got it right. Although more precisely it is not so much that conservatives are uneducated as it is that the uneducated are conservative. Bearing in mind that “uneducated” is a euphemism for “Unenlightened”. And if one is conservative, uneducated and has a smidgen of religion, they are therefore unenlightened. Today we are measured by how enlightened we are, on the spectrum of the more liberal you are the more enlightened you are. But, to be on the safe side, stay paranoid (because total global enlightment can only be achieved via a purge).

Many of those big Hasidic families are also heavy consumers of welfare, food stamps and Medicaid.

So don't count them as a conservative voting bloc just yet.

Meanwhile, the ethnic group which has the highest percentage of high-school dropouts votes 95% Dem.

In his book The Jew in American Politics (New Rochelle, NY: Arlington House, 1968), Nathaniel Weyl made the case, more than 40 years ago, that Jews should be conservatives.

That group got early enlightenment. No need for further education.

That's pretty much a national trend.

“I think he is just saying that a diverse community presents problems, whereas a community of diversity is a good thing. And that diverse diversity is best case. Because a diverse community is divided, and a community of diversity isn’t. He is making a statement that has the words “diverse” and “diversity” in one sentence. So he obviously knows what he is talking about.”

Good one

Let us hope so.

Unfortunately, even Charedi Orthodoxy isn't always a sign of Republican or conservative affiliation. Historically, the traditional leaders of Jewish communities have had to be on good terms with whomever is in power (and in urban America, that means liberals). Furthermore, they have looked to whomever is in power to protect them from the mob (which in Europe was rural chrstian "bumpkins"). Those same rulers often used the Jews to do their dirty work (such as collecting taxes), which took the wrath of the masses off themselves and put it squarely on the Jews.

There are other issues at work as well. As a largely parochial, inward-focused community (and one for which the society gets "multiculturalism" points), Charedi Jews simply have not had to deal with the sewer directly. They have had the luxury of living in islands of Theocracy championed by liberals who regard their religion merely as a de-criminalized deviancy in need of protection from "decent people" (much like "gays"). But Jews are far from the only population group to benefit from this. The ancient oriental chrstian communities (Syrian, Coptic, Ethiopian, Armenian, Indian, Assyrian) and even Eastern Orthodoxy are extremely quietistic and extremely ethnic, living in worlds of their own where confrontation with secular political authority simply does not exist.

And yes, these groups still see the majority population as a danger as great as or even greater than the State itself. And American-style Fundamentalist Protestants living in other cultures have the exact same attitude.

Half-hearted "BOOLSHHIITE" call.

Hillary bought these "Conservative" Jewish votes quite easily by making deals with their head rabbis. Does anyone really expect a majority Republican vote from the very same people who practically invented European Socialism?

I take that as a lefthanded/underhanded/backhanded swipe meaning conservatives are uneducated................or am I paranoid?

No, you're *not* paranoid. "Uneducated", in liberal parlance means 'the indoctrination didn't take, or take fully'. It is an article of faith among leftists that *any* deviation from their line of BS means you'r ignorant (uneducated)...

Orthodox Jews did not invent European socialism. Numerous non-Jewish Europeans contributed to the making of European socialism.

Since I'm not Jewish and live in the rural Upper South, it's not first hand experience. It's just historical fact. But thanks for the compliment.

Not all demographic shifts are against us. Consider this, in another generation current trends could mean that NYC Jews become a GOP voting block.

When Baraq Obastard announced his support of gay marriage black pastors across the country publically berated him and many went on national television saying that they could / would not support him in the upcoming election.

He lost less than 1% of the black vote over that. I will believe it when I see it.
