Only thing church was was a preacher prancing back and forth, beating his fist on a Bible telling us we were all going to hell if we didn’t change out ways.

Well this has been done before you know?

Matthew 3:

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

"Oh, the Catholic Church has had sinners in her presence before? I’m shocked, shocked!!"

Well, NKP_Vet, I'm not shocked at all. Truth is we have had some pretty big sinners in Protestant churches too..... but that was not my point.

I was commenting on the following.... "I can not fathom the thought of not agreeing with the Pope in matters of faith and morals." And I was attempting to make the point that when a Pope makes laws and sets up situations and participates in these terrible sins, how can you not agree that he is setting an example of bad morals and in at least one case even setting the example of worshiping a devil. His people will look at that and in many many cases think he is advocating these acts or saying they are all okay to do because he is doing them.

In my church we admonish our leaders when they sin and take away their leadership roles instead of making excuses for them such as, "the personal sins of a pope don’t effect his ability (or inability) to teach infallibly on faith and morals." as FourtySeven stated. I would say that a leader's personal sins can and definitely do many times affect his ability to teach faith and morals, especially if his sins show him to be a liar. Do you not think that years and years of some pretty horrible act of various Popes played a part in the need for the Reformation and many many people leaving the Roman Catholic church? I would say that was a huge "effect"!

Let’s see... If I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior and read the bible, but beat my wife and drink to excess: that’s okay.

Quite a canard there no? Or a harbored straw man? Did you comment on the "How can Protestants be Saved" thread? Now I will say, the poster should have turned the other cheek and not create another opportunity to relive the Middle Ages.

Only a liberal would dare believe that Jesus Christ had brothers and sisters.

Only a fool would think to disagree with what the bible plainly says...

Of course faith in God (Jesus) is a requirement for salvation. The question is is it the *only* thing. First of course comes faith, but after that, then what? That’s really the question.< P>So; I'll put you down as a Saved by GRACE; but Kept by WORKS man.

Because I’ve looked at John 6:28 again, and I don’t see the word “only” there.

You looked too hard for the WRONG thing.

The word MUST means something.

I wonder what?

"Mary is the whole hope of our salvation." ST. THOMAS AQUINAS

Then why don't the MORMONs mention her?

In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.

1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

Ezra Taft Benson

Because I am a Catholic and have the fullness of the faith.

I guess that'd make up for emptiness of the skull.

Instead of wasting all this energy trying to determine who is and who is not saved - a word that Jesus rarely used - shouldn't we spend our energy instead on the gospel that Christ spent three years preaching on?

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

WV, I would let it be. The Roman Catholics were wrong to post the inflammatory “How can Protestants be saved” and this thread is just stoking the fires of masking the Gospel message.

After a prolonged war both sides forget who fired the first shot and just keep on shooting because the other guy is shooting. That is what happens here in the FRRF. I rarely see the Grace and Peace of the Gospel in these theological discussions. A new member may wonder what is going on here.

And for those confused on what I mean by “Gospel” we have it clearly defined in Luke 24 and 1 Corinthians 15. That is what Christ and His apostles left us.

All these long commentaries on one swimming to one side of the Tiber or the other. Our message should be clear. Be washed in the Blood of the Lamb.

Now we all have good discussions and debates on issues such as Scripture and tradition, the canon etc. All good theological discussion topics. But who is saved or not and what is the ‘church’ affiliation? All such deep convictions can easily be measured by the Words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His apostles. For no Pope, pastor, deacon or priest will stand before God’s Throne. We are either alone and wanting or have our Lord and Savior advocating for us.

Off soap box...

1. Jesus said this is my body, this is my blood. He did not say this is like my body and like my blood.

The difference between simile and metaphor.

Acts 7:51 You stiff-necked people, you always resist the Holy Spirit. We, by our own freewill, can resist God and His grace, and turn away from Him.

Detch were you paraphrasing Acts 7:51? Not being a stickler but it says this:

Acts 7:

51 “You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did. 52 Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become; 53 you who received the law as ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.”

If you going to be a Christian don’t you think you might be better off in the Christian faith started by Christ himself some 2,000 years ago instead of an off-shoot faith started by a mortal man?

YES! Which is precisely why I could never join the Roman church.
