Surpassing Sola Scriptura
Answering Protestants ^ | 31 March 2014 | Matthew Olson

Posted on 03/31/2014 5:45:28 PM PDT by matthewrobertolson

“[The Church] does not, in the conventional phrase, believe what the Bible says, for the simple reason that the Bible does not say anything. You cannot put a book in the witness-box and ask it what it really means.” – G. K. Chesterton

Sola Scriptura is the Protestant doctrine that the Bible contains all knowledge necessary for salvation and holiness. Under it, only doctrines that are found directly within the Bible or are drawn indirectly from it by simple reasoning are allowed. (See material vs. formal sufficiency & perspicuity.)

2 Timothy 3:16-17 is the primary passage used to defend this view, which always boggles my mind. Perhaps I need spectacles, but I do not see an “Only” at the beginning of this verse. The Church teaches (as Scripture teaches) that all Scripture is valuable. She does not, however, turn it into an idol.

Some Protestants also claim to honor other authorities, like the Church – but do they really? In a short written debate with a Protestant professor, he said, “Sola Scriptura does not even claim that there is no other authority besides the Bible; it maintains that the Bible is alone (sola) as the only infallible authority.” Some apologists concede this position, but I see no reason to, and so I responded, “The practical effect [of Sola Scriptura] is that it denies the authoritativeness of any other authority – making that authority not an authority at all.” The professor quickly changed the topic.

Sacred Tradition (capital ‘T’) is, obviously, a stumbling block for many, but it is perfectly reasonable. Not everything of relevance could fit within the Bible (John 20:30-31, John 21:25). This is evidenced by the elaborations of the Church Fathers, as well as the decrees of the Councils. And much of this has been written and can therefore even qualify as (extra canon) Scripture! Anyway, all Scripture must be interpreted “according to the spiritual meaning which the Spirit grants to the Church” (Origen).

Pope Francis noted, “Sacred Scripture is the written testimony of the divine Word, the canonical memory that attests to the event of Revelation. However, the Word of God precedes the Bible and surpasses it. That is why the center of our faith isn’t just a book, but a salvation history and above all a person, Jesus Christ, the Word of God made flesh.” (cf. CCC #108). All teaching is valuable – God is not limited to a book compiled by His Bride. On this point, the Bible is like a wedding album shared by two spouses: the husband, typically, arranges and provides for everything, while his wife fills in the details – but still, at the end of the day, it does not sum up their whole marriage.

Another great blow to Sola Scriptura is that the Bible did not put itself together, and it does not list the books that belong within it. It took the Jews thousands of years to decide on the Tanakh (their canon) and, even then, “Hellenistic” Jews preferred the Septuagint! The only reason that we know which books comprise the Testaments is that the Church has informed us. If the Church, as Her own entity, is not infallible on such doctrine, then the Bible cannot be trusted.

Many Protestants also allude that absolute truth can only be found within the Bible. If I throw an apple up into the air, it will fall. Where is that in the Bible? Of course, one could quickly retort with the idea that the Bible only necessarily contains the absolute moral truth necessary for salvation. But many Protestants do not actually believe that – just look at the large crowds of literal creationists! To be clear, the Bible is not guaranteed to be totally historically or scientifically inerrant in a literal sense. “Inerrancy extends to what the biblical writers intend to teach, not necessarily to what they assume or presuppose or what isn’t integral to what they assert.” [Catholic Answers] And if a Protestant would like to say otherwise, he must prove his position from the Bible – which he cannot do, at least not to any definite degree. Even natural law, which exists outside of the Bible, does not encompass such. Leaders like Ken Ham could be defeated with these points.

I just cannot help but despise this great heresy of Sola Scriptura, the implication of which is that the Bride of Christ does not know Her Husband.

I love the Second Vatican Council’s statement on all of this: “[T]he task of authentically interpreting the word of God, whether written or handed on, has been entrusted exclusively to the living teaching office of the Church, whose authority is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ. This teaching office is not above the word of God, but serves it, teaching only what has been handed on, listening to it devoutly, guarding it scrupulously and explaining it faithfully in accord with a divine commission and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it draws from this one deposit of faith everything which it presents for belief as divinely revealed.” (Dei Verbum)

Let us put it this way: only trusting the Bible without the Church would be like loving “Romeo and Juliet” and hating Shakespeare’s explanation of it.

The Catholic Pope Francis and Bishops as well as Priest have Apostolic Succession from Jesus Christ Himself beginning on Pentecost Sunday the Protestant Churches don’t have that same TRUE succession today.

If there ever was an apostolic line (and there wasn't) it got lost when your popes started passing the position on to relatives, when others sold the pope position to the highest bidder and lost when they killed each other for the position...You really think God had something to do with those events or honor those events???

So how could an intelligent, somewhat educated human being believe in the farce called apostolic succession, unless it is the powerfull influence of demons???

2Co 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2Co 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

So, King David and King Solomon had no authority, either, due to their sins? You sound like a Donatist.

How about you: where does it say in the Bible “the Bible alone”???

In so many words, here:

Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. - Deut 4:2

God's Name is I AM.

In obedience to the Scriptures, Protestants fled her apostasy and rank idolatry.
  1. King Henry VIII and his churchmen fled the Catholic Church for lust.
  2. The Protestants continued to separate from each other until they have devolved into thousands of denominations, sects, and independent entities.
  3. The only thing they all agree on is that they will not join the Catholic and other Orthodox Churches.
  4. Some of them have re-formed their religion, and prima facie cannot be the true faith since they were founded, not by the Messiah and his Jewish Apostles, but by protesting Catholic priests and lawyers.

The Protestant tradition has fallen grievously short of Jesus' prayer to the Father record in John 17.

These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. 8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. 9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. 11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. 20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. 24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. 26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

>>How about you: where does it say in the Bible “the Bible alone”???<<

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:8-9

Now, either find another provable source for what the apostles taught or you are stuck with scripture “alone”.

So You Mock GOD and Jesus Christ? God needed a Sinless vessel as in Mary to be the Vessel to process the Incarnation...
remember Gabriel Proclaimed HAIL Mary Full of Grace... It is her sinless Nature that made her Unique.
Jesus was the King of the Universe his Mother was designated Queen..
Please don’t mock & belittle Mary. God the Father chose her to be the mother of his son our Lord Jesus Christ. He Chose Mary how can you Look down on her disparagingly.

Just as the 3 wise men all gave Jesus in Bethlehem Gifts worthy of a King. His Mom was the Queen Mother..who birthed Gods son.

Later Jesus performed his 1st Public Miracle at CANA on the wishes of His Mother.. her Command was “Do as he Says... he obediently did as she requested.

Deuteronomy 4:2 is in the Torah, so you've taken the verse out of context here, Alamo-Girl.

Also, Christ is the Word (John 1).

Your ‘red’ ink is impossible to read, so of course I went to the source of ‘Sola Scripture’. Strangely, Christ did not mention one time His mother in His prayer to the Heavenly Father.

Wonder who decided the Heavenly Father needed prayers to dead people?

Worshiping a church is idolatry.

well IS.. look it up in the original Koine Greek - your assertion is FALSE.

I don't think I can do that and I KNOW you can't do that since the original Greek doesn't exist...

But whose Greek do you suggest I search??? Some Greek texts that originated in and came out of Africa, or maybe some Greek texts that originated from around Antioch and Jerusalem???

But now you are saying the wrong Greek is used...

{5:13} These things I write to you that you may know that you have eternal life: you who believe in the name of the Son of God.

Well it looks like your own Catholic Douay Rheims used the wrong Greek as well...So tell me, if the Protestants used the wrong Greek, and the Catholics used the wrong Greek, where are you going to go to get the right Greek???

I am just amazed at the lengths you guys will go to try to defend your religion...

>>A question of similar importance is: show another provable source of what Scripture really consists of other than what the (Catholic) church has preserved and taught.<<

The Greek manuscripts. It is they which show the Catholic Church to be apostate. Besides, God used Judas, Balaams donkey, and Harrod to further His goals.

I’ll give you another.

God says.

Deuteronomy 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. 31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.

But the Catholic Church says.

“We need not shrink from admitting that candles, like incense and lustral water, were commonly employed in pagan worship and the rites paid to the dead. But the Church from a very early period took them into her service, just as she adopted many other things indifferent in themselves, which seemed proper to enhance the splendor of religious ceremonial. We must not forget that most of these adjuncts to worship, like music, lights, perfumes, ablutions, floral decorations, canopies, fans, screens, bells, vestments etc. were not identified with any idolatrous cult in particular; but they were common to almost all cults” (Catholic Encyclopedia, III, 246.)

Catholics can’t deny that the RCC has incorporated pagan practices into its practices. The RCC itself admits that it does. The RCC refuses to hear the words of the Lord.

It’s happened before.

“As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee. But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.” (Jer.44:16-17)

Apostles didn’t mention it - see the Third Council of Ephesus - circa 431AD

If the apostles didn't mention it why even consider what a bunch of guys wearing fish hats had to say 400 years later??? If Mary had been born sinless you can bet the apostles as well as Jesus would have had plenty to say about it...

It is not possible for Deut 4:2 to be out of context:

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. - Hebrews 13:8

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. - Rev 1:8

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. - John 8:58

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: - Col 1:15

Also, each time Jesus replied to Satan in the temptation, He said "it is written."

“Since Christ suffered for the Church and since the Church is the body of Christ, without doubt the person who divides the Church is convicted of lacerating the body of Christ.”

Christ suffered and died for the sins of man in order that they would believe and have eternal life.
