THE PROTESTANT’S DILEMMA BY DEVIN ROSE: A REVIEW
Just a writer, who refuses to typecast his blog by giving it a title ^ | March 18, 2014 | Scott Eric Alt

Posted on 03/19/2014 1:32:10 PM PDT by rwa265

If a Protestant looking into the claims of Catholicism were to ask me, “What one book should I read, where I can find a quick answer to any question I have?” I would tell him to read Devin Rose’s new book The Protestant’s Dilemma. I would also recommend this book to Protestant apologists, even those of many years, well-skilled in polemics. It will remind them of the heavy burden of proof they face, and the weakness of their position on point after point. The truth may set them free and bring them home too. (It has happened.)

All this may seem like overstatement — the obligatory praise from one Catholic blogger to another. But it is not.

Consider first the range of issues this book takes up. There are thirty-six chapters, each one on a different topic, from the papacy to sola scriptura, from the canon of the Bible to Purgatory, from confession to Eucharist to infant baptism. If something about the Catholic Church troubles you, this book has the answer. If you think you have found the point on which Catholicism fails, this book will show you why it is one more point upon which Protestantism fails.

Consider also the brevity. The book is just over 200 pages long, which means that Mr. Rose’s answers get to the root of the question without a knot of academic detail. It is harder to do than it might seem. This is the book of a man who has spent a long time studying the questions that divide Protestants and Catholics, and who knows how to present his case in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. At the same time, the book is useful for the professional apologist, for it recalls his mind to the basics.

No I understood your point.

It doesn't square away with what the Pope said in this case. Guess we're gonna agree to disagree on this.

As to my political leanings....let's just say I'm to the right of Reagan.

I could ask the same of you.

I will assume your question is sincere.

You need to do exactly the three things I pointed out priest or not.

1) you must know and acknowledge his sins in detail by a detailed examination-of-conscience,

2) you must have a ‘firm-purpose-of-amendment’ agreeing to sin no more as much is humanly possible, and

3) you must make an ‘act-of-contrition’ similar to this prayer:

“On my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because I have offended Thee , oh my God, who are all Good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of they Grace to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen”

IF the person is properly disposed to properly perform the three steps above and makes what is called “A Perfect Act of Contrition” by essentially forgetting about ‘the loss of heaven and the pains of hell’ but purely because their sins have Offended the Father, then they may have their sins forgiven by God - we don’t know because we are not Him.

BTW, I have had this discussion with very faithful protestants who have agreed that these steps would likely save a sincere sinner.

again if you are sincerely interested you could read this link and should understand the position of the Church essentially unchanged since the Didache from the first century.

First, your using a second hand source the learned and most accurate Fulcher of Chartres) and as far as I know uncorroborated by any other source. wow you accept any other single source - was good old Filcher divinely??? inspired was he speaking ex-cathedra???

Second, it doesn’t matter what a any Pope says if he is not speaking ex-cathedra its like Obummer picking brackets.

all the Dems I know just quote source after source signifying nothing.

So you’re saying his offer of immediate remissions of sins wasn’t valid?

I understand based on the Bible the requirement for forgiveness of sins and salvation.

And I have asked and believe Christ died for me as a one time offering for all my sins...past, present and future. I confess my sins to Him on an ongoing basis to maintain a proper relationship with Him.

listen I don’t know what your game is but:

1) you make a statement “his offer of immediate remissions of sins wasn’t valid?” which quotes a version of events unknown and uncorroborated.

2) you quote the vaunted ‘Filcher of Chartes’ and don’t provide the LINK to the ORIGINAL SOURCE DOCUMENT i.e. from whence you got your quote.

3) I make a few statements, which I am certain are true and correct and I provide links to corroborate my assertions, which you obviously have not read.

You need to go to protestant apologist school a little more because you just ain’t cuttin’ it.

GOODBYE.

WOW look at all that multi million dollar land Thomas S Monson owns..

Corporation sole...

Lots of tithing money went into the purchase of those 1,000s of acres..

and they wouldn’t let him prove he hasn’t defrauded any person in the UK or the UK government..

Meanwhile he’s got that evil black mark against him..

and also meanwhile Tom Phillips with his 2nd anointing and no evil black mark will still be a king and a good in the celestial kingdom..

the 2nd anointing is like dead dunking..it cant be reversed..

Tom Phillips cannot be excommunicated and unless he murders someone he can stay out of the Mormon religious services and not pay one more penny of tithing..

and hes still going to go to the celestial kingdom where most of the devoted Mormons in these threads are not allowed to go..

Just imagine that !!!

Vindication city !!!

just one more thing you said:

“I confess my sins to Him” which is wrong and anti-scriptural.

The particular quote is:

James 5:16
English Standard Version (ESV)

16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

from the Didache:
But every Lord’s day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure.

confessing your sins to God is a protestant twisting of Scripture

farewell

Really?

Do you mean Jesus didn't really mean to teach that?

Who knew?

Luke 11:1-4 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

The LORD Jesus Christ speaking...

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

This, then, is how you should pray: “’Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors....” Matthew 6:6-12

Did you see that ???

Jesus tells us to ask God for forgiveness for our sins in private..

“when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. ....This, then, is how you should pray:..forgive us our debts.” Matthew 6, 9, 12
