I turned it down for you.
This is nonsense. Throughout his ministry Jesus mocked and used as foils the so called learned and Pharisees that quoted the Biblical passages literally. They were vapid then and they are vapid now.
intrigued

**Diving deeper into its meaning, especially when I was challenged to defend my Protestant faith against Catholicism, I found there to be no book specifically on the topic and no uniform understanding of this teaching among Protestant pastors.**
And so the story goes with no foundation. When will it fall over like the house built on sand?
Did Jesus mock himself?
Mt 4:10 Then Jesus saith to him: Begone, Satan: for it is written: The Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and him only shalt thou serve.
And many more...
On what is the claim to authority of the Catholic Church based?
Seriously, notice that the Roman Catholics cry non-Roman Catholics are Catholic bashers/haters whenever we post a critique of the Roman Catholic Church?
Not considering scripture inspired at this point it's based on the historical record of their content.
confused,,,,?
but I rely on the Master,
Alpha and Omega.
I turned it down for you.
LOL now the title has developed a flaw.
Origen (185? - 252), No man ought, for the confirmation of doctrines, to use books which are not canonized Scriptures,
Athanasius (300? - 375),i.The Holy Scriptures, given by inspiration of God, are of themselves sufficient toward the discovery of truth. (Orat. adv. Gent., ad cap.) The Catholic Christians will neither speak nor endure to hear anything in religion that is a stranger to Scripture; it being an evil heart of immodesty to speak those things which are not written,
Mat_15:6b ... So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.
Can you show me that in the historical record of the Scriptures, HarleyD?
Completely misses the part about going outside the written word.
Deut. 4:2.....You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take anything from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
Deuteronomy 12:32 Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.
Proverbs 30:5-6 Every word of God is pure; he is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
When I was Catholic. I firmly believed in traditions, ancient Roman civilization accretions and myths of the last 2000 years. Now it’s Sola Scriptura for me. I never ran into anticatholic stuff on FR as I see procatholic antiprotestant stuff now. Maybe jim doesn’t need my$20 per month.
“Peter, you are rock, and upon this rock I will build my Church”
Peter was the first Pope.
The Vatican has custody of St Peter’s remains. Under St. Peter’s Basilica.
Where is the Bible ALONE part?
Deuteronomy 12:32 Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.
Where is the Bible ALONE part?
Proverbs 30:5-6 Every word of God is pure; he is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
Where is the Bible ALONE part?
Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Where is the Bible ALONE part?
Besides, John was referring to the book of Revelation, which he was in the process of writing.
You are arguing for the authority of Scripture. No one is disputing that.
The argument is over the authority of Scripture ALONE. The "alone" part was the novel aspect of Luther's doctrine.
""He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me" -- Jesus to the Apostles
"If he will not listen to the church, treat him as a pagan or tax collector." -- Jesus
"...which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth." -- St. Paul
"But the word of the Lord abides for ever. That word is the good news which was preached to you" -- St. Paul
"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures. . . . Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed" -- St. Paul
"stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter" -- St. Paul
"[W]hat you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also" -- St. Paul
Scripture, Apostolic Tradition and Church Teaching are true Christian Authorities.
“Not considering scripture inspired at this point it’s based on the historical record of their content.”
And how do you know the historical record is an accurate and authoritative basis for the Church’s claim?
No, He condemned the traditions of men that the Pharisees put ahead of Scripture.
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness by Satan, Jesus responded with *It is written....* quoting Scripture only.
The only thing vapid here is your argument.
But which takes precedent when there is a difference between them?
