You really go to Mass for the Eucharist. The sermon was always secondary to Catholics of my generation. Who knows what the young people today believe.
The Catholic Church is not a denomination.
I chalk it up as jealousy that they can trace their sect starting within the last 400 years or MUCH LESS....started by mere men breaking away from the ONE, TRUE CHURCH that was established by Jesus to Peter. We have to PRAY for them.
My experience has been the diametrical opposite: Protestant sermons (even the most "fundamentalist") rarely, if ever, mentioned Catholicism, while almost every Catholic publication (plus the tracts in the back of the church) were full of attacks on those awful "fundamentalists." Does believing the Book of Jonah is historically true violate some big church law?

“President Obama’s words today are not surprising since they follow upon various actions already taken by his administration that erode or ignore the unique meaning of marriage,” said Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. bishops’ conference, in a May 9 statement.
“We cannot be silent in the face of words or actions that would undermine the institution of marriage, the very cornerstone of our society,” Cardinal Dolan added. “The people of this country, especially our children, deserve better.”

They are quite a sick bunch. Spooky, really!
I have to be honest that this is a difficult subject for me.
The Bible tells us to welcome the aliens in our midst and in the land that God gave us. I know many of the Latino people in my parish and imagine that some of them are not here legally. They are good people and I feel for them.
I am grateful to have been born here. Grateful to be an American and I can certainly understand the desire for people to come here.
Our priest has spoken about this in the past and probably will do so again. My biggest complaint, which I have brought up to him, is when he accuses those who oppose illegal immigration and amnesty of somehow being oppressors or bigots.
I am not a bigot and I welcome legal immigrants. My problem with the illegals is their antipathy toward assimilation and their expectation that we should cater to them in their inability to speak English.
It is a fine line the Church walks. We are to be loving and generous people. But, we are being overrun with those who come here and take and take and take. We are losing our ability to take care of ourselves and also everyone else.
As you can see I am pulled both ways. As a conservative, I want our borders protected from illegal entry by anyone. As a Christian, I want to care for my brothers and sisters in Christ.
There is no easy answer for me.

Really? Attacks on fundamentalists in church bulletins and “tracts”? Wow. All I remember is the adverts for the local funeral parlor and the marriage bans.
According to the Bible... the Church is your body.. and your Being.. It is where you worship God from. Building or no building, your body and soul IS your personal church.. When you read the Bible, you understand what is needed to be understood, and not someone telling you their version of what THEY read it as.
Feeling comfortable in a church is important... they relate to the way you see what you’ve read. As soon as they distract or redirect, it is time to leave.

You have never lived until you have sat through mass with your two young children at their most impressionable age and having to listen to pretty graphic advocacy of homosexuality, sermons on how the church's position on homosexuality was based on misinterpretation and being informed both in and out of mass that if you did not agree with these teachings on the Church’ s endorsement of homosexuality you were a bigot, intolerant, un Christian and a host of other unpleasant things.
I was all for their efforts to recruit and encourage homosexuals to attend mass but totally opposed to the Priests teaching the gays that their lifestyle was both Christian and life affirming and also to use those newly recruited gay members as agents to change the church from the inside in accordance with their Homocentric theories of Christianity. .
I was also all for the vocation of ministering to those stricken with AIDS but personally distraught at the fact that end state AIDS victims who were facing imminent death were being taught by Priests that their homosexuality was in accordance with christian beliefs rather than being encouraged to repent.
As a result of the actions of these Priests, more than a few souls went to God firmly believing that that their unrepentant embrace of homosexuality was not a sin but was instead in accordance with the teachings of the Bible and they would be welcomed with open arms.
I'm not one to judge, but I fear for the souls of those poor people who I feel were misled by what almost certainly should be considered false doctrine at a difficult and critical phase of their lives.
I was also very upset with what I and many others considered their abuse of Canon Law and the the church's teachings on obedience and obligation to further their agenda of changing the Church form within.
This went on for quite a number of years until about 10 priests were laicized and removed from their positions and at least two were formally excommunicated for their open and aggressive advocacy of homosexuality and their in your face defiance and disobedience to the Bishop's attempts to correct their conduct.
While it saddens me, you recovered admirably!
Well, I got a lot of private messages from concerned Catholics about the disgusting attacks on the Church. They cheered me up quite a bit. And then the realization that there are some truly unhinged people on the anti-Catholic threads. Thank you for your post!!
Thank you (see #147), but it is my choice to attend only the liturgy of my youth (and countless generations before).
