Does The Orthodox Presbyterian Church use the Crucifix?
The Orthodox Presbyterian Church ^

Question:

Does the OPC use the crucifix in the church? If not, are they opposed to it?

Answer:

Thank you for your question. The answer is, so far as I know, the crucifix is not used in OPC churches, and here is why:

1.The Second Commandment (Ex. 20:4-6 and Deut. 5:8-10) forbids any picture or image of God, and that would include the Son of God, even as man. At any rate we do not know what Jesus looked like as there is no physical description of him.

2.The crucifix will always end up being an object of worship—regarded as holy. History teaches as much. The bronze serpent Moses made became an object of worship and was not destroyed till King Hezekiah did it (Numbers 21:9; 2 Kings 18:1-5). Roman Catholics have worshipped it, kissed it and held it to have mystical powers.

3.Christ did not remain on the Cross. In the Roman Church Christ is said to be resacrificed each time the Mass is celebrated. This is heresy; he died once for all—Hebrews 9:25-28.

We in the OPC have learned not to trust our idolatry prone hearts not to do the same as others have in the past. Hence, no crucifixes are used. So, yes, we are opposed to it.

As for "doctrines out of His mouth", you quote Old testament statements by men, as justification for your ideas. BUT, your ideas seem to come from human, not Godly thought.

Here's an area where we divide. The quotes I gave are flat, across-the-ages facts, written by men but the words (not the English words translated but the original words from which we ought to have the mind of the hearer) are those of The God.

Question: Which words of those verses are not the words given and transmitted to us by the Holy Ghost?

Your post 397: His heart was greatly enlarged from the torture, IIRC from doctors' estimation. No chance naturally then to get the heart back into pumping condition ...

Joh 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

Sorry, I forgot. Jn. 19:34 -- no doctor needed, explains itself. Use Google on "pericardial edema" . IIRC a well-known response of athletes to extreme muscular effort, congestive heart failure w/ pulmonary edema

Still no mention of an enlarged heart or a doctor. You seem to be including things that just aren't there.

I was pointing out that his assumptions were not directly stated in scripture. I do have the book “A Doctor at Calvary” and was able to see a presentation about it by a Forensic specialist (MD) several years ago.

"God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or think. "

Amen.

"And after my flesh has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes -—- I, and not another!"(Job 19:26-27).

It is only when those things control us that there is an issue.

"Here boss, this cart is shaking a bit. Let me steady it."

"Oh Suzy, just have a bit of this fruit, it won't hurt you. It's pretty, tasty, and will make you wise."

"Son, if you don't drink more than a pint a day, its not a mocker. And you can quit it any time. Done it all my life."

The “taught from the womb “ account won’t do for theogically/Scripturally educated Protestants who convert in their mid forties.

One commandment of God given too two people.

"Son, if you don't drink more than a pint a day, its not a mocker. And you can quit it any time. Done it all my life."

Pharisaical man made rule that do nothing to advance the kingdom.

See the difference?

OK, tell of the method by which you can say authoritatively that the wine made by Jesus at Cana was fermented wine.

Oh; about the SAME way that you say it wasn't!

Whoever said that Lot wasn't aware of the power of the wine he was drinking.

Well; for one; I was the fella that claimed he was a RIGHTEOUS man.

YOU have made the claim that RIGHTEOUS folks would not come CLOSE to fermented drink; right?

Was the doctor there at Calvary, the Bible doesn't mention his name.

This is some ASSUMPTION that a nameless doctor has made - he(she?) really doesn't have to be in the BIBLE for his(her?) opinion to get stuck in folks mind.

(There's a LOT of that going on you know...)

That is a wholly unsubstantiated assumption you have no right to make if you want to debate the meaning of Scripture with me.

Some ASSUMPTIONs are more equal than others.

Your argument here is full of holes, and not worthy of one who wishes to look at the account with spiritual discernment.

Still no mention of an enlarged heart or a doctor. You seem to be including things that just aren't there.

You seem to be excluding things that are there. Is Jesus fully, perfectly human male. If so, then under these circumstances his body will react to the torture the way every other similar male body would, and that diagnosis is known.

If you think there was anything unusual physically that says Jesus is not fully, perfectly human male, then you have a very large Christological problem.

Regarding doctors estimate, if you recall, I inserted the proviso IIRC of what I read concerning the progress of the cross-death.

We'e done here. Whatever your problem is, I can't fix it.

If you take this comment to be pejorative, it is not meant so. It is more that of an elder or teacher as a cautionary observation, not as condemning criticism.

None noted.

But a preening, smug superiority HAS been detected.

...being buried instead of cremation...

I would imagine that LOT's of believers have died in horrible fires, leaving nothing but ashes behind.

Ya get ate up off Martha's Vineyard because you don't have a bigger boat - there wouldn't be much 'body' left to resurrect either!
