Obviously this passage is figurative and metaphorical. Even if not, it is the man's works that burn.
Given a disposition to believe in Purgatory, I suppose this could be used as supporting evidence, but standing alone, it's weaker than the Zimmerman case.
Actually, it does not do the former and is weaker than the latter.
