Is the Pope picking a fight? I had to wonder that when I heard on Friday about the appointment of Salvatore Cordileone -- one of the nation's most outspoken foes of same-sex marriage -- as archbishop of San Francisco, the gayest city in the country.
Cordileone has called same-sex marriage a plot by "the evil one."
And as much as anyone, he led the drive for Prop. 8, the ballot initiative that banned same-sex marriage, according to a an expose in the East Bay Express. Cordileone thought up the proposition, raised money, and put a compassionate face on the campaign, the Express reported.
When he takes his new position as archbishop of San Francisco, Cordileone will find himself surrounded by people who vehemently disagree with his position.
In conversation with KQED's Stephanie Marti, Cordileone made it clear he won't back down from his fight :
Its going to be a big challenge of course but this is what the Lord has called me to do. I hope I can respond honestly and generously and effectively. He calls every generation to serve him in some particular way in terms of whats going on in the world. Thats what it is for me.
But what exactly does this mean for an archdiocese that stretches from Hawaii to Utah?
To get a perspective, I called Bernard Schlager, executive director of the Center for Gay and Lesbian Studies in Religion and Ministry at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley.
"I think we know a good bit about what he will do," said Schlager, himself a Roman Catholic. "He sees same-sex marriage as a profound moral threat."
The only ministry to gays and lesbians that Cordileone supports is a kind of 12-step program -- treating homosexuality as if it were an addiction, Schlager.......

Well its one thing to welcome all people into the church buts its another to actually promote and support same-sex practices from the pulpit. God loves all and doesn’t condemn but convicts the hearts of the people of sin whether its gay sin or anything else.
I hope so!
Frisco ersatz Catholics like Princess Pelosi who have the morals of those in a vice squad holding cell need to be hit with Christian fundamentals right between their evil eyes...
...oh, the Sodomites will howl and have hissies out the wazoo with their friends in the Dem Party and the MSM but the new AB simply sticking to the scripture will be the rock their waves of unwholesome and unholy umbrage will crash impotently against.
AMEN!!!
My God Bless him with Wisdom, Strength, Courage, and Humility to take on this important task.
Agreed...a brilliant appointment. Not used to the Catholic church being this smart. Past time to stop being a victim of these thugs...and start fighting back.
Well said!
My first thought upon learning of this appointment was to think that Benedict had thrown down the gauntlet on the subject of "same sex marriage".
Jesus in Heaven is where He belongs but Jesus in Hell is where He is needed.
Pray for him every day. He will be in great danger from the deranged ones intent on continuing in their evil.
Indeed yes! May God give him strength!
It can probably be assumed that he will have to do much “housecleaning” of the dioceses.
Problems seldom get solved by ignoring them.
We need a few thousand more preachers, ministers, and priests giving sermons condemning sinful behaviors and less wishy-washy inclusiveness.
God doesn't condemn???
That, in effect, was what I meant by “housecleaning”.
There are likely a lot of clergy, and certainly leaders in the laity of the Archdiocese, that need to be retired and replaced with a new generation who are far more serious about their faith. Too many in those positions today have “several masters”, and are not in the church to serve it, but to change it to the liking of some other belief system.
God does not condemn. We condemn ourselves, through the rejection of God. God gives us a choice and respects our decision.
Peace be with you.
Jesus most definitely condemns sin. The condemning of the soul — yes, that is something that follows from the conduct and beliefs of the person. Peace be with you also.
Agree, but that was not the contention. Jesus does not condemn anyone. He only sadly accepts the product of the free will He gave us.
Peace and blessings
Yes, you are correct. Though he looked and sounded great today, we must continue to ask that God’s protection be upon him. He will be surrounded by wolves even inside the Chancery office.
