I want to thank Archbishop William E. Lori for reminding me once again why I'm an ex-Catholic ("Fight for freedom," June 27). With the so-called "Fortnight for Freedom," the church leadership is deliberately and cynically using a mixture of patriotism and religion in a blatant and manipulative attempt to influence the outcome of the upcoming elections.
I can't seem to recall any recent news about Catholic churches being bombed in the United States or attempts to bar American Catholics from attending mass. I do know that the Catholic Church has been using its "religious freedom" for decades to aid and abet child abusers, to recently attack nuns in the United States who are at the forefront of what used to be one of the church's primary missions to aid and comfort the poor and needy, and that the American church has over the past few decades formed an alliance with some of the most strident and politically active right-wing religious groups in the U.S. Archbishop Lori even received an award in May from a coalition of some of those groups.
I am proud to be an American, and I am a strong supporter of the Bill of Rights. I support freedom of religion, and I support freedom from religion. And, at this moment in time, I am also very proud and happy to be an ex-Catholic.

It wasn't hatred of where they were from but love of where they were going that defined their view of themselves.
Sandy, you were about as Catholic as the Obamadork is Christian. Were you to get mad at the church for bending over to let the Kennedys and their sordid marriages/affairs/etc go without retribution, I’d agree with you.
Were you to get mad at the church for keeping homosexual priests who love to boink boys, I’d agree with you.
But you’ve raise the lib flag (thereby indicating your rather limited intellect).
With all due deference to my upbringing, please shove it up your smelly Obama. Go tweet, enter gobbledegook on facebook, or do some other thing within your capabilities.
“’Fortnight for Freedom’: One more reason to be a Hell-bound wretch.”
I wonder if Sandy feels the same about our country? If she doesn’t like what’s going on, will she become an “EX” American? You don’t fix things by turning your back and walking away.
Being defined by one’s enemies, such as this asshat anti-Christian bigot, makes the Catholic church look pretty good.
This woman does NOT support freedom of religion, as she can’t imagine religion being more than going to Mass.
I’d wager good money that this reprobate never had any faith to begin with.
Dear Sandy,
You’re an ex-Catholic because you do not believe the Catholic Faith to be true. Given that so many people who share your non-belief still claim to be Catholic, I commend you for your honesty.
However, as a non-believer in the Catholic Faith, you really have nothing to say about Catholicism that cannot be summarized as “Blah blah blah,” so why don’t you toddle off and have contraceptive sex and write a fan letter to a Marxist dictator or two.
Sincerely,
Tax-chick
Believe me, the very LAST thing the Church wants to do is take sides in a partisan political battle. They have done so in the course of their history, and it almost never came out well for them.
Their backs are against the wall on this. The courts clearly are giving this a pass. Their only option to maintain freedom is to openly work to defeat Barack Hussein Obama. I am sure this is keeping many of the Bishops up at night and giving them a massive case of heartburn.
But we are out of alternatives, thanks to that self-promoting “great Catholic” John Roberts.
This is true. I have never said, “Oh, I’m so proud to be an ex-Presbyterian! Being saved out of that false religious system was the best thing that ever happened to me!”
Instead, I’m deeply grateful for what I learned as a Protestant: an appreciation for Scripture, both as God’s word and as magnificent literature; lots of fine four-part hymns; an obligation of service to the church community and the larger community; a spirit of patriotism; a profound trust in Providence (the concept, not the city). To this day, my ideal church (building) is Presbyerian: full of light, unadorned natural wood, with a Viking-ship roof.
I hope that my children, brought up as Catholics, could make the same list “and then some,” although I don’t know their ideal building. The Alamo, perhaps ...
Amen sister, I agree with you. I would guess most Catholics who appreciate the gift of their Catholic faith agree too. She apparently didn’t receive the gift of the Catholic faith. Too bad for her.
Last week’s fortnight related letter read during the homily was the most charged, “call to arms”-like thing I’ve ever heard at Mass in 35 years. It was clearly meant to rouse. I say “it’s about damn time!” The church is about to reap what it has sewn by sidling up to democrats for decades on socialist social issues and immigration. 54% of Catholics voted for obama the 1st timeand now many regret that stupid, myopic decision.
And if I had to guess, Sandy has had at least one abortion, hates men because men are just so damned male as the feminists have so ingrained into the minds of women, smokes pot, plays with her cat while she whines and cries to her lesbian therapist about how there are no good men out there, and basically blames everyone else for her own shortcomings.
You do not believe in the Bill of Rights and you probably have never read them.
Go join the unitarians or scientologists. They love people like you.
If you accept the results of unscientific and unreliable exit polls utilizing suspect, at best, methodology.
And which dismissive response i have seen from RCs on any stats that impugn the reputation of their church. However, while there must be allowed a small degree of error in any such surveys, when numerous polls consistently testify to Catholics overall leaning liberal, and RCs invoke them to raise an alarm, or when some favor their church, then it is those who dismiss such as unreliable whose credibility is to be questioned. http://www.peacebyjesus.com/RC-Stats_vs._Evang.html
Dear Sandy,
Sorry, but you do not erae the Baptismal and Confirmational marks on your soul that indicate you are a Catholic.
You need to sit down with a priest and get your questions answered.
I pray that you do.
That is the same reasoning that makes him a socialist and anti-Constitutional, ex-American.
LOL! We must be making some waves for fish like this to jump out of the water.
