There's been an absolute plethora of articles trying to "play down" the impact of Mitt Romney's Mormonism on this election...especially with the theme of "Evangelicals and other conservatives have nowhere to go but Mitt."

The problem is that this media drumbeat largely ignores Independent voters. Per this article: Mitt Romney faces an anti-Mormon bias just as strong as the one his father confronted during his own presidential run more than four decades ago, according to a Gallup poll. Eighteen percent of Americans say that if their political party nominated “a generally well qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon,” they would not vote for that candidate. Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, is a devout Mormon who once presided over the church’s Boston stake. When Gallup asked the same question in 1967, during George Romney’s bid for the White House, 17 percent of Americans said they would refuse to vote for a Mormon...Democrats, who are unlikely to vote for Romney anyway, oppose a Mormon president at a much higher rate than Republicans, 24 percent to 10 percent. Opposition among independents stands at 18 percent.

Knowing this, the Dems & MSM "ace in the hole" this summer will be to "educate" the 43 percent of voters who still don't know that Romney is a Mormon!

From the article: The electoral significance of a lingering anti-Mormon bias is unclear because only 57 percent of Americans even know that Romney is a Mormon, according to the poll. “This suggests the possibility that as Romney’s faith becomes better known this summer and fall, it could become more of a negative factor -- given that those who resist the idea of a Mormon president will in theory become more likely to realize that Romney is a Mormon as the campaign unfolds,” Newport said.

Of course, this will all result in more non-Mormons becoming apologists for Mormonism; and for blaming those who expose Mormonism -- instead of the GOP-E...who gave us a guy who...
...thinks he's an alien from the Planet Kolob -- having been spirit-born there (something that apparently doesn't bother the birther crowd)...
...thinks that the White House is just a career move toward the Great White Throne as another god in the universe... [see Op-Ed: Mitt Romney's proposed career path — President, then God [White House-->Great White Throne]
...thru age 31, was giving a tithe toward an open racist organization -- the Mormon church!!! (Btw, those racist verses are still there in the three peculiar Mormon "scriptures"...they only changed one of them...in 1981)

This article talks about "anti-Mormon bias"...yet we are all called to discern worldviews. We are concerned about the "ISM" in MormonISM; not simply that somebody has a "Mormon" label. For example, if you are a voter and Romney's corporate worldview bias toward blacks -- his racist ties -- are an issue to you, please research:

* Racist principles were taught to older Mormons such as Professor Randy Bott [Admits Lds columnist] * Thinking Strategically about a Ban Disavowal [Mormon racism re: ban of blacks] Key quote from above article -- from a Mormon non-profit org leader (Kevin Barney): ...if Romney gets the nomination, then we’ll see this issue blow up in such a way that the last few days will seem like a harmless firecracker...

* Racist Remarks by popular BYU Religion Professor Spark Controversy

* Is Mormonism Still Racist? Comments from a BYU professor stir up a troubling past

* BYU Professor makes controversial statements about Blacks & LDS Church * Faith, truth and priesthood restriction (Mormon racism)

Too many MSM articles & its accompanying headlines -- suggest we are to accept ALL religious worldviews equally...lest we be somehow "guilty" of "bias." Yet, we are to favor truth; and refute falsehood, and to do so unapologetically!!!

I don’t agree with the theology of Mormonism. However, Martin Luther once said that he’d rather be ruled by a competent Turk than an incompetent Christian. In this case, I’d rather be led by a competent Mormon, than an incompetent, destructive, culturally Muslim Atheist posing as a Christian.

—Anti-Mormon bias facing Mitt Romney is as strong as what his father faced in 1967, poll shows—

It should be stronger. We know more now.

What derailed George Romney’s presidential hopes was not his Mormonism but his liberalism.

Boo Hoo. If Bishop Romney can't stand the heat tell him to get out the h**l out of the kitchen.

Bishop Romney knew what he was going up against before he spent tens of millions in the primaries to get this far, so tough turkey if it's uncomfortable for him or his supporters. Whatever hits him it won't be any worse than what would be thrown at any Catholic who was the nominee and I bet some of the whiners would be in the front ranks of the "anti-Papist" propaganda crowd.

I expected to see a parentheses with “(Free Republic Mentioned)” after the article title.

Capitalist Mormon or Communist Muslim? Is there really a choice?

Funny. I became involved with politics with Goldwater and in 1967 I do not even remember George Romney. He must have been a major player.

Then Gallup needs to gear up; for it's going to be a LOT stronger this time!

I’m surprised that even 17% give a darned.

What with the nominal Christians-in-name-only folks. like those here on FR, who care nothing about the majesty of Christ and think it is hunky-dory to vote for a god-in-training.

Why have we even come to this point? If Christians would have had any gumption whatsoever, they would have defeated Romney in the primary. Evidently there are a lot of so-called Christian sellouts.

You know, it's one thing to calmly say: "Mitt Romney is too liberal for me to consider voting for him for President". I frankly say the same thing myself. (Although living in a state which is liable to go for Romney by 10+ percent, it's a painless, guaranteed regret-free choice).

However, getting churned up into a high-drama, foaming-at-the-mouth case of Romney Derangement Syndrome is something I would recommend against.

Its only result is liable to be giving the DUmmies something to laugh at (if DU had an "FR Funnies" series threads like this would get star billing).

the theme of "Evangelicals and other conservatives have nowhere to go but Mitt."

Wanna bet? (not really, as I don't wager)

As bad as Mormonism is for the candidate, if he were a 'good Mormon', it might be somewhat palatable... might be overlooked considering the present administration... But add 'mormon' to pro-choice and pro-homo, and this guy is simply a non-starter for any Christian I know.

The 'Pro-Life' cause is the single biggest issue, bar none, which will remove the Christian Right from the Romney cheering section. It is, and has been the single biggest immovable principle to the Christian Right, and if they elect this guy, with the record he has, I will be ashamed of my brethren. And they will rue the day, mark my words, as the principle of Life will be thrown under the bus from that very day forward.

There are pro-life candidates available, and the Christian Right has the singular ability to lift them out of the cheap seats. That is what I will hope for, and I will be doing my part.

Mormonism = Plural Marriage = Polygamy

President Lincoln was disgusted by “plural marriage” and Mormonism and even signed a law to try to protect America from Mormons and their anti-Christan lifestyle. So now, most (but not all) Mormons keep their plural wives in the closet. The election of a Mormon president would provide the occasion to begin opening that closet door. If we can’t completely extinguish Mormonist perversions, let’s at least keep the closet door closed.

As you are trying your best to drive prejudice between Romney and others with your daily anti-Mormon spew, this article is right up your alley. Or right up your something, anyway.

You’ve become repetitive and boring. You remind me of Willie Green and his trains.
