Mitt Romney faces an anti-Mormon bias just as strong as the one his father confronted during his own presidential run more than four decades ago, according to a Gallup poll.
Eighteen percent of Americans say that if their political party nominated a generally well qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon, they would not vote for that candidate. Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, is a devout Mormon who once presided over the churchs Boston stake.
When Gallup asked the same question in 1967, during George Romneys bid for the White House, 17 percent of Americans said they would refuse to vote for a Mormon.
The stability of resistance to a Mormon presidential candidate over the past 45 years is an anomaly, given that resistance to a candidate who is black, a woman or Jewish has declined substantially over the same period of time, Gallup Poll Editor-in-Chief Frank Newport wrote in a press release announcing the survey results.
The electoral significance of a lingering anti-Mormon bias is unclear because only 57 percent of Americans even know that Romney is a Mormon, according to the poll.
This suggests the possibility that as Romneys faith becomes better known this summer and fall, it could become more of a negative factor -- given that those who resist the idea of a Mormon president will in theory become more likely to realize that Romney is a Mormon as the campaign unfolds, Newport said. That things will actually work out this way, however, is far from clear.
Democrats, who are unlikely to vote for Romney anyway, oppose a Mormon president at a much higher rate than Republicans, 24 percent to 10 percent. Opposition among independents stands at 18 percent.

ah...and you prefer the America hating communist...
How nice for you.
We’re not electing a Pope!
Why in the heck are you concerned with “heresy”?
We have a choice between Obama’s agenda to destroy America and Romney.
There are no other choices.
We’re not voting for a Pope.
Your concerns are misguided and misdirected.
I’m a conservative Roman Catholic, who supported both Gingrich and Santorum.
The notion of taking any action that isn’t 100% focused on ousting Obama, has no rational basis.
“How do conservative RCs vote for someone who is pro-abortion?”
1-By recognizing and accepting his conversion on the subject.
2-By recognizing that none of the Pro-Life Presidents since Roe vs. Wade have been able to change the nations abortion laws.
3-By recognizing the difference between being unable to change existing law, vs. Obama’s aggressive promotion of abortion, including late term abortion, infanticide, and abortions for minors, without parental consent.
However, getting churned up into a high-drama, foaming-at-the-mouth case of Romney Derangement Syndrome is something I would recommend against.
Its only result is liable to be giving the DUmmies something to laugh at (if DU had an "FR Funnies" series threads like this would get star billing).
It has become quite evident that the lengthy posts exposing MormonISM have been made not for purposes of trying to awaken Mormons but to defeat Mitt Romney in the primaries and now in the race for president. If the mainstream media do this, would you endorse that? A few short years ago you wouldn't have.
If you think long and hard about that, you might figure out there is a ‘bigotry’ wager running with such misuse of the Gospel of Salvation. I hope you DO think about it, long and hard, because this is getting disgusting to watch as people are manipulated to trash Mormons when it was claimed by the Inmans that we were exposing MormonISM to help Mormons awaken to the blasphemies in their religious system. Using that to attack Mitt Romney is hypocrisy writ large. Do you really want to be proud of such? Can you not see that is how you've been manipualted?

I’m ashamed of you. Strop trying to use the Gospel of Grace in such a sleazy way.
When was Romney’s conversion?
Was it when he instituted $50 and free abortions?
Was it when he promoted embryonic stem cell research?
Just when was that enlightenment?
Can I throw in that the job title is Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces and that is the primary job responsibility.
It would be great if we had the option of someone who was a pro-life champion realistically taking on Obama, but we don’t. The reality is, unless drastic things happen, the next Commander in Chief will either be Obama or Romney. No one is riding in on a white horse to save us.
Facing this reality and the world we are in, I have to look at which of the two we can trust our soldiers lives to.
That really does make me ABO, but heck, I would vote for an Illegal Alien, Transvestite, Buddhist, Reptilian over Obama.
We don't elect 'rulers' or 'teachers', we elect a Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces.
If some really believed in grace and faith, they would be praying for God to guide whomever is elected and that they have a true conversion instead of posting Landover Baptist material over and over.
Too bad NO Romney nor Obama have ever served in any type of US military capacity.
We are left with two losers to choose from.
True, but one is not openly hostile towards our military and hasn’t shown they will put them in harms way for whatever political de’jour headline they need or to help their Muslim Brotherhood friends take over another country.
Careful now, you might be warned of impending Lightening to strike me for blaspheming the obsquious use of The Gospel of Grace to attack Milt Rominy.
“When was Romneys conversion?”

What a horses ass question!
He currently acknowledges he is pro-life.
The timing is not relevant.
You asked “how” I could support him, and my answer is that I believe his current position.
THAT is all that is important on the Pro-Life question.
And it is certainly sufficient to gain my support of Romney over Obama.
How can YOU do ANYTHING that doesn’t maximize the opportunity for Obama’s defeat?
Since we only have Romney’s very liberal record as Governor of Massachusetts to go on, one can never be sure.
But if he does happen to put our troops in “harms way for whatever political dejour headline” he can always just give it an etch-a-sketch shake and start all over again.
Is your agenda to stop Christian resistance to Mormonism?
Do you do that as a Mormon, or just to fight Christianity?
That wasn’t the question. The question was how can you as a conservative RC vote for someone who is pro-abortion?
If you answer is that Romney is not as bad as BHO, that is answer. It is not an answer to ask me why I wouldn’t do everything possible to get rid of BHO. It is quite a leap, to make those equal.
However, I do know when Romney changed his position on life issue. (Notice the 2012 position, he is not pro-life)
Here is the time line:
Romneys evolution on abortion:
Romney said I am not comfortable with my status on abortion and want to be called pro-life. (2012)
Romneys government health care provides $50 to free abortions. (current)
Romney appointed pro-choice judges to his court, they are still serving. (current)
Romney said Roe v Wade should be overturned and left to the states, so that makes me pro-life. (2011)
Romney supports stem cell research. (2004)
Romney said abortion should be kept legal, safe and rare and will honor that commitment. (2002)
Romney said I am committed to preserving abortions rights. (2002)
Romney whether you are for abortion or not is relevant, the individual should decide. (1999)
Romney said is a debate with Kennedy that he was more pro-choice than Kennedy. (1994)
Romney was applauded by plan parenthood for his pro-abortion stand. (1994)
Wanna bet? (not really, as I don't wager)
As bad as Mormonism is for the candidate, if he were a 'good Mormon', it might be somewhat palatable... might be overlooked considering the present administration... But add 'mormon' to pro-choice and pro-homo, and this guy is simply a non-starter for any Christian I know.
The 'Pro-Life' cause is the single biggest issue, bar none, which will remove the Christian Right from the Romney cheering section. It is, and has been the single biggest immovable principle to the Christian Right, and if they elect this guy, with the record he has, I will be ashamed of my brethren. And they will rue the day, mark my words, as the principle of Life will be thrown under the bus from that very day forward.
There are pro-life candidates available, and the Christian Right has the singular ability to lift them out of the cheap seats. That is what I will hope for, and I will be doing my part.
