Confirmed: Romney family had Ann Romney's atheist father posthumously baptized into the Mormon...

After wondering aloud yesterday whether the Romneys converted Mitt's dead father-in-law to Mormonism...Yes. They did.
Edward Davies, Ann Romney's father, was an atheist who was also strongly anti-religion. By the time he died, he was the only member of Ann Romney's immediate family to not convert to Mormonism.
Fourteen months later, in 1993, he was baptized in a special ceremony at a Salt Lake City church. This practice requires a living person who has already been baptized to undergo the immersion in water again on behalf of the dead. No word on who this person might have been in Davies' case.
Information on the ceremony was listed on a genealogical database, and another entry on Ancestry.com detailed a separate sealing ceremony that linked Davies to his wife in death...
Baptism of the dead is encouraged by the Church of Latter-day Saints, as it is seen as essential to salvation. But the LDS Church has been criticized for it often. After coming under fire in 1995, the Church agreed to stop baptizing Jewish Holocaust victims posthumously. It had already added tens of thousands to its baptism registry by that time.
Romney's faith has done little to damage his quest for the presidency so far. But the issue pops up once in a while, most recently after Romney's tax returns showed a $4.1 million donation to the Church. There's also evidence to suggest that anti-Mormon sentiment could have given votes to Newt Gingrich in South Carolina.
When Newsweek asked Romney whether he had performed any proxy baptisms in the past, Romney responded "I have in my life, but I haven't recently."

To: Salvation
John the Baptist baptized with water and foretold of Christ baptizing with the Holy Spirit. This whole thing doesnt make any sense to me at all. There is no spirit to be baptized in a dead corpse. I agree - can't convert an empty husk to any religion.
I had to convert from Catholicism (and attended other denominations for a while) to non-denominational to get an understandable and simple idea of what our relationship with God is supposed to be. I also have trouble understanding why folks would want to pray to dead mortals (the Saints) when they have been given a direct path to God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

What does ancestry.com have to do with it? I’m honestly curious becauseI have used ancestry.com for fun, and I’d like to know if it meant some Mormon dedided to get dunked for one of my ancestors.

Im pretty sure Mormons do this for everybody. That's the PR and the practice; as much as possible.
But - and here is the kicker - you have to have a NAME to speak in the Temple®.
There are BILLIONS of humans who have passed thru this world; leaving NO record of their existance.
Ask a MORMON how THIS little problem will be resolved...

Perhaps that should go where the sun doesnt shine on you. Luke 8:17

GOT A PROBLEM WITH IT?This MIGHT be in the MORMON bible; too:
Hebrews 9:27 KJVas it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
But, if it WAS 'mistranslated' (as the Articles of FAITH of the LDS church alludes; then Joseph Smith PROBABLY corrected it in the JST version of the KJV.)

Here is MORMONism's own creed:
Articles of Faith
The Articles of Faith outline 13 basic points of belief of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Prophet Joseph Smith first wrote them in a letter to John Wentworth, a newspaper editor,
in response to Mr. Wentworth's request to know what members of the Church believed.
They were subsequently published in Church periodicals.
They are now regarded as scripture and included in the Pearl of Great Price.
THE ARTICLES OF FAITH OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS History of the Church, Vol. 4, pp. 535541
- We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
- We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
- We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
- We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
- We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
- We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
- We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
- We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
- We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
- We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
- We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
- We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of PaulWe believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

FREE KITTENS
A pretty little girl named Suzy was standing on the sidewalk in front of her home in Salt Lake City. Next to her was a basket containing a number of tiny creatures; in her hand was a sign announcing FREE KITTENS.
Suddenly a line of big black cars pulled up beside her. Out of the lead car stepped a tall, grinning man.
"Hi there little girl, I'm President Thomas Monson. What do you have in the basket?" he asked.
"Kittens," little Suzy said.
"How old are they?" asked Monson.
Suzy replied, "They're so young, their eyes aren't even open yet."
"And what kind of kittens are they?"
"Mormons," answered Suzy with a smile.
Thompson was delighted. As soon as he returned to his car, he called his PR chief and told him about the little girl and the kittens.
Recognizing the perfect photo op, the two men agreed that the president should return the next day; and in front of the assembled media, have the girl talk about her discerning kittens.
So the next day, Suzy was again standing on the sidewalk with her basket of "FREE KITTENS," when another motorcade pulled up, this time followed by vans from Deseret News, The Ensign magazine and KSL.
Cameras and audio equipment were quickly set up, then Thompson got out of his limo and walked over to little Suzy.
"Hello, again," he said, "I'd love it if you would tell all my friends out there what kind of kittens you're giving away."
"Yes sir," Suzy said. "They're Christians."
Taken by surprise, the Living Prophet® stammered, "But... but... yesterday, you told me they were MORMONS."
Little Suzy smiled and said, "I know. But today, they have their eyes open"

I don't know. As a near professional genealogist, I was dumbfounded 15 years ago that some of my ancestors who died 250 years ago, were baptised by Mormons 80 years ago.
I don't think very highly of their religion, but I will give props that they have done more for genealogy than any other one entitiy.
