Even the the New York Times, in the early 40s, praised the Pope for being one of a very few voices in Europe raised AGAINST Hitler, during his rise in Germany. For an accurate, and heavily attributed, view of just exactly what the Pope and the Catholic Church, were doing during WWII, read "The Myth of Hitler's Pope", by Rabbi David Dalin.
