Mark 400th Anniversary of King James Version by Studying Bible [Mormon]

It is not by chance or coincidence that we have the Bible today,” says Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He explains that the Bible exists because of the obedience of righteous individuals who followed promptings to record sacred experiences and teachings, as well as the faith and courage of others who later sacrificed much to “protect and preserve” the Bible. Credit is also due, he says, to men such as John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, and Johannes Gutenberg, who translated and published the Bible in languages that ordinary people could understand and read. “I believe even the scholars of King James had spiritual promptings in their translation work,” he says.

Knowing the Scriptures

Read messages about the scriptures that today’s prophets and apostles have given during general conference.

May 2, 2011, marks the 400th anniversary of the first publication of the King James Version of the Bible. Throughout the world, people of many religious and nonreligious backgrounds are already commemorating the publication of the Bible with symposia, celebrations, concerts, speaking competitions, and more. Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles suggest another way to mark the occasion: by developing a love for the Bible as we study the life and ministry of the Savior and the words of the ancient prophets and apostles.

How grateful we should be for the Holy Bible,” Elder Ballard says. “I love the Bible, its teachings, its lessons, and its spirit. . . . I love the perspective and peace that come from reading the Bible.”

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles agrees. “We love and revere the Bible,” he says. “It is always identified first in our canon, our ‘standard works.’” He reminds us that the Restoration came about because Joseph Smith studied the Bible and exerted faith in the promise made in James 1:5 that God will answer our prayers.

Recalling the events of history that paved the way for the Restoration, Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles speaks with gratitude for all who made possible the translation and publishing of the Bible. Because of their work, the King James Version of the Bible was available for anyone to read—and because it was available to young Joseph Smith, the true Church was restored to the earth. Is it any wonder that the King James Version is the approved English Bible of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today?” Elder Hales asks.

We must ever remember the countless martyrs who knew of [the Bible’s] power and who gave their lives that we may be able to find within its words the eternal happiness and the peace of our Heavenly Father’s kingdom,” Elder Ballard says.

President Boyd K. Packer, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, shares a story about viewing a centuries-old family Bible and finding a quote on the title page that said, “The fairest Impression of the Bible is to have it well printed on the Reader’s heart.” He follows with this scripture (2 Cor. 3:2-3): “Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in the tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.”

The best way for us to honor and remember those whose sacrifices not only allow us to read the Bible in our language, but also to enjoy the blessings of the Restoration of the gospel, is for us to know the Bible and its accompanying scriptural texts. By knowing and loving its teachings, we show our appreciation.

Consider the magnitude of our blessing to have the Holy Bible and some 900 additional pages of scripture,” says Elder D. Todd Christofferson. “May we feast continuously on the words of Christ that will tell us all things we should do.”

The Bible and the Book of Mormon

As separate testaments of Jesus Christ, the Bible and the Book of Mormon support rather than supplant each other. Elder Russell M. Nelson explains, “Scriptural witnesses authenticate each other. This concept was explained long ago when a prophet wrote that the Book of Mormon was ‘written for the intent that ye may believe [the Bible]; and if ye believe [the Bible] ye will believe [the Book of Mormon] also.’ Each book refers to the other. Each book stands as evidence that God lives and speaks to His children by revelation to His prophets.”

Religious scholars presented LDS perspectives at a Brigham Young University symposium, The King James Bible and the Restoration, in February 2011.

"We do not believe the Bible has to have come down in perfectly untampered fashion to be spiritually normative and eternally valuable.” —Robert L. Millett, BYU professor of ancient scripture."

"Brother Millet cited God’s 1830 direction that Joseph Smith make an inspired translation of the Bible as proof that God wanted Latter-day Saints to read and study it."

Do they have a copy of KJB on the planet Kolob? Huh?

I wish they’d leave our Bible alone and accept Jesus as the only God.

This weekend was General Conference weekend.
On Sunday, a talk on the Book of Morman clearly put the BOM on the same level as the Bible, then talked 10 times more about the BOM.

Monson's message was titled "Precious Promises of the Book of Mormon". Oh, and they are building five new temples..."This will bring the number of temples announced or under construction to 31"...The Corporation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints doesn't seem to be cutting back in this time of need for millions of people worldwide.

Could you please provide a list of who's authorized to read your Bible.

LDS study and accept the Bible as the inspired word of God. We also accept Jesus Christ as our only Savior and Redeemer. Why can't you be happy for fellow believers? Why the snarkiness?

(1) The LDS followers need to decide if the closed canon of Scripture is ulimately authoritative--the first, foremost, and final word of God on every matter of faith and practice...

--AND--

(2) The LDS followers need to re-evaluate the writings of Joseph Smith and others in light of the Lord's injunctions stated clearly in the OT and NT -- "do not add" & "do not take away".... from God's Word

--AND--

(3) The LDS followers need to decide if they are going to interpret and apply the Bible to their lives, faith, and congregation via historical-grammatical exegesis -- in order to let the text speak for itself -- or will they continue to "prooftext" their particularly unique Christology -- while wearing the interpretative lenses fashioned through the Book of Mormon and other "sacred writings" that have been altered several times through the years...... and likewise appear to be merely commentaries, though exalted higher than the authority of Biblical truths.

There is enough disagreement between essential Biblical truths -- and the conclusions of Mormon "theologians" that merit and open-face comparison.

As those intellectually honest comparisons yield irreconcilable differences -- the choice is presented:

(a) The Mormons have chosen "another Jesus" -- and the backdrop of unique theological context of Jospeh Smith...

(b) Reconsider... Returning to testimony of Scripture weighted on its own merits as the inspired Word of God;

--AND--

(c) Be faithful in the use of interpretive principles of hermeneutics and the literary science of textual criticism, that have served the true Body of Christ from the time of the early church fathers until the preent day.

lds in their articles of faith say the lds accept the Bible as far as it is translated correctly.
lds jesus - created
Biblical Jesus - eternal
lds jesus - not sufficient for salvation IE after all we can do
Biblical Jesus - sufficient
lds jesus - paid the price in the garden
Biblical Jesus - paid the price on the Cross
lds jesus - needs secret ceremonies and rituals and temples
Biblical Jesus - tore the temple vale from top to bottom, no more secrets
lds jesus - brother of satan
Biblical Jesus - not the brother of satan
lds - can become god
lds multiple gods
lds - celestial marriage
So O when you say jesus is your savior, which jesus do you speak of?
The Biblical Jesus or the lds jesus, they are not the same.
If you are speaking of the Biblical Jesus then why are you lds?

The Corporation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints doesn't seem to be cutting back in this time of need for millions of people worldwide.

What could be more important for those millions of people in need than the message of Jesus Christ and his atonement? You really want us to "cut back" when the world needs His message more than ever?

After reading another thread, I went and read D&C 132 in its entirety - from the LDS site.

My jaw simply dropped to the floor. How convenient that Joseph Smith received instructions from God that his wife Emma (named specifically, see 132: 61- 65) should accept polygamy.

The more I read about Mormonism the more I am coming to believe that it is based upon the teachings of a man that really enjoyed spreading his seed around, under the guise of spiritual authority.

And “but they’re so nice!” just doesn’t cut it for may any more. Even the Devil can act “nice” while asking for your soul.

I accept Jesus Christ as my Savior and Redeemer. There is no need for me to choose between the "LDS" and the "Biblical" Jesus because they are one and the same.

Your list of "differences" simply displays a profound lack of understanding of what we LDS really believe. If you're going to spend time discussing the LDS religion, you should find out what we believe instead of continuing to spread misinformation.

The King James Bible is a mix of fantasy, folklore and out and out manipulation of the real gospel of Jesus Christ.

Like celebrating rape and murder, why would we want to celebrate 400 years of fiction??

You could stop wondering if you bothered to ask us. We could easily answer that question.

Of course, that would mean you would actually want to learn something about Mormonism. Bad-mouthing someone else's religion without bothering to learn anything about it is so much more fun, though

I stated: lds in their articles of faith say the lds accept the Bible as far as it is translated correctly.

You stated that was incorrect.

LDS ARTICLES OF FAITH #8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

You stated that was incorrect.

I said no such thing. I said you have a profound lack of understanding of what the LDS believe. I stand by that statement.

So what you are saying that you're just fine with incorrect translations of the Bible?
