Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress, said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
But someone said to me, Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harborthis might be a news story.
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
I just felt it was ritual and dogma, Ellison said. Of course, thats not the reality of Catholicism, but its the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.
It wasnt until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, looking for other things.

And we thank God that Marty failed as a Catholic...
Reprise again
Boehner did not stand up - His golfing with Obama was a Rino move - no offense to your reference - please don’t take it wrong
You and the enemy thank God.
Why do you think that a heretic is right?
John 5:28-29
King James Version (KJV)
28Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
Yes and Amen.
The resurrection of the body will take place.
I prefer the Douay Rheims myself - because of St. Jerome’s suffering to get it right
Jerome says - Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.
Our creed - from the apostles ends with “the resurrection of the body” and life everlasting.
It comes from this verse - Catholics do not make things up - never!!
PS - that is why the Blessed Mother was assummed - she just went ahead of us because she was perfect
I do not blame our protestant brothers and sisters for having been raised to believe that Catholics try to “earn” their way into heaven.
Scripture clearly says that apart from faith in Jesus, there is nothing we can do to merit the grace of God.
I completely agree.
However, Scripture is equally clear that “works” are expected of those who have faith and accept that grace.
The Catholic belief that one’s faith is confirmed in one’s works is one of the most misunderstood.
Protestants have the same belief they just don’t say it quite the same. How many times have you heard a protestant say, “Well, I am a good person.” or “I try to be a good person.”
We all want the same thing, life with Christ, both in this world and the next. It is completely in keeping with people who love Him and because they do, they love their neighbor.
Are you from that area?
I had the great pleasure of visiting Buffalo last summer for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas national convention.
One of our day trips was to see the shrine where he is buried and the school he built.
The truly remarkable part of his story is that he was not young when he began his work there.
Your post 4138 >>none addressed to Christ or the Holy Spirit<<
How is quoting you changing anything into a personal attack?
SURE she WAS!
Aruanan already did it in 4142
Therefore, since it happened before; we can just claim it happened again; with NO proof at all.
You may feel all you want; but the RITUAL was established LONG ago: It's known as the Passover meal. It happens once a year for a REMEMBERENCE of GOD's saving provision.
Get it?
In memory of me...
No government money attached -
And now; OUR government can't even run a cathouse and turn a profit!
Well; just who WOULDN'T??
Show us a man who AIN'T!
I think they 'get it' alright; it's just that don't like other folks using it as an excuse to say that his conclusions about Catholicism are wrong.
Uh...
Remember than Elijah example just a few replies ago?
The thief on cross did no WORK.
Why do you think that a heretic is always wrong?
Sigh...
Luke 18:19
Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
Yup; there is a LOT of assumin' goin' on here!
