My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

Scene: New York City, man is going to jump off the building. Up rushes good Irish cop. Cop yells up to the man “Don’t jump! Think of your father”

Man replies “Haven’t got a father; I’m going to jump.”

The copy goes through a list of relatives, mother, brothers, sister, etc. Each time man says “haven’t got one; going to jump.”

Desperate the cop yells up “Don’t jump! Think of the Blessed Virgin”

Man replies “Who is that?”

Cop yells “Jump, Protestant! You’re blocking traffic!”

This thread is about a Catholic that converted to ISLAM!

I wonder what the count is, total that have done this?

And, also, how many Catholics have 'converted' to MORMONism?

After 4000 responces I figger a thread could use a little variation; so how many MORMONs here on FR used to be CATHOLIC?

(I hear it's a quite fertile field for the Mormon Missionaires...)

Galatians 3:1-9 1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6just as Abraham "believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness"?

7Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you shall all the nations be blessed." 9So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

She is the ark of the new covenant

Remember you couldn’t even look at the first one without dying instantly - that’s why

That is why I quit listening to Glen Beck. Sure he went to Mormon- not Islam - same difference.

Both refute the divinity of Our Lord.

I’m married to one of them. She saw the light though. It was a social thing for my mother.

Now she’s a proud Jesus/Theist. Sort of like me. No organized religion, no bible thumping, no testimony bearing, no scripture quoting. And we’ll decide who to give money to.

We have evolved to another level of understanding in which all charity choices are ours. Believe me life is great once you shed the guilt and pressure of organized religion. No offense intended here.

Utah I am close to joining you.

It is the last supper Do this in Memory of me that causes me to feel the ritual is needed.

I’m sorry. I got that you were agreeing. The caffeine affected the output function, not the input. Plus unless I’m at a hot spot, I’m confined to composing on my crackberry — which makes me crazy. Okay, crazier.

Phronesis is an interesting concept.

Now I have to create the illusion of productivity.

Reprise - right on target - “we’ll decide who to give money to”

Read about Father Baker - Our Lady of Victory in Buffalo.

He persuaded the blue collar Buffalonians to give 10 cents per week . - voluntarily - and he turned those suckers (the ladies of the night/ the young cads, etc. around.

No government money attached -

Will James 2:14-24 convince anyone.

Nope...But Ephesians 2:8 will...

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

We will be setting the date for the picnic with Jim Robinson once we can all agree on a date. Last July we had a nice turnout. Our sunrise service included music and sharing of thoughts. When I introduced and thanked Jim I had a Boehner moment.

Boehner, as in tears shed.

I thank Jim as well - I am new here. The people here are awesome.

Just a few anti catholics that I am in a fight with - soon I will stop because they will not ever get the fact that Luther was screwed up.

I am going to try once more- we are saved through faith -

Then we must work.

I repeat - Martin Luther was a failed Augustinian. This Sola Fide is a wrong premise.
