My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

Just always remember that God's word means what it says and says what it means. If it is studied with that in mind, and not pre-conceived notions that do nothing more than confuse, you will always be on the right track! There is simplicity in Christ. When people start dragging out extra-this or "what He really meant to say" that, you know you're in trouble.

2 Tim. 2:15.

But remember, the 12 were told that what they bound on earth was bound in heaven. If they chose from the two, the one they chose was bound in heaven, also. God respected the decision. And Paul was never even part of the discussion. As he wasn’t saved until Acts 9, how could he have been?

You are right in your wise assessment. I now have a new idea thanks to you smvoice. It is not a conviction yet however. Replacement theology is a lie is recent a conviction of mine.

I choose to believe Acts 1:21-25. If it lay undiscovered, it may be because they were so busy trying to re-write God’s word into Apostolic Succession101 that they failed to actually READ what IT said. That would be not my problem.

"One can only "blaspheme" God."

Show me a dictionary that only supports that definition and does not include holy personages or sacred things? All I can get from your poorly worded posting is that you do not consider the Mother of Jesus worthy of holy status........blasphemy.

Maybe your beef, then, is with the Moderator?

It's my strict constructionist thing. (Okay. I admit that sounds weird coming from a Catholics.) I've never liked it when people say at, say, the super bowl, "Let them play football," when what they mean is that the refs shouldn't enforce the rules.

Oh well.Not important.

God's word will never let you down. Fallible men will. Especially those who have traded God's word for man-made doctrines.

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Tim. 2:15. Want to stand before God and not be ashamed? Rightly divide His word. And study His word. The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth. And His Spirit will bear truth with your spirit, rather these things be of God or not.

I don't get the problem. I'm trying to derive the word. I'm guessing emptor is 3rd declension, nominative: emptor, genitive: emptris, so the stem is emptr and the -ix is added to make a feminine nominative.

No I have to go research the etymologyof "co-" This is stuff I started learning in 7th grace, and my last Latin course was in 1965.

oh and Bb, note that I'm talking about Quix's group with it's belief in alien gods and Jesse Duplantis went to heaven to comfort Jesus etc.

The open threads on the Religion Forum are where one criticises groups like Quix's "Proddy" group (which thankfully has been verified as distinct from Protestants), just as one points out how your own particular sect has its hollow center of incompleteness where it dances and sings to hide its fear of the inexorable.

Sad, your group boatbums is so morose in it's incompleteness as it is separated from Christ and the completeness of His Word and community.

No wonder it doesn't focus on Christ but on attacking those who are not filled with its hollowness.

Sorry, my granddaughter is actually in her second year of Latin, I should really just call her and ask.

John never said or implied that there was more information to be passed on to anyone...

That wasn't the assertion that I was questioning. I was questioning "ONLY God's Word has ALL The Truth."

Oh and as I said — if you can’t take the open threads on the religion forum, stay off them. Enjoy your group’s next dance-to-forget-the inexorable session...

"Why do Catholics seem to by default consider that anything a non-Catholic says is a lie?"

Precedent.

You deflect by asking more questions or changing the subject but answering that not so much.

I'm reporting this for abuse. Back off. I'm done with you.

You may want to do some research on the glorious liberty of the children of God, on how Jesus is more powerful than the non-existent gods of the gentiles, and on John Damascene’s thinking about the questions you raise.

I don't have a problem with the Moderator. I have a problem with snippy, do as I say not as I do, thread stalkers whose only fun in life is pointing out the obvious. People know when they've crossed the line into making it personal. It happens. Move on. But no, there are those who on the one hand, demand justice, and on the other hand, proudly proclaim their unwillingness to work next to certain people? How does that make sense?

BTW, these persons of interest should really check their Bible for possible printing problems.

They are called the BEATITUDES, NOT the ATTITUDES.

"But the proofs in the pudding..."

Yes it is, which is why one never sees the anti-Catholics willing to discuss miracles.

Hmmmmm....I thought you were in favor of pinging people you’re talking about....

Evidently, you don’t think that little courtesy applies to you, just other people.

BTW, I think I’ll add you to the list of people I’m unwilling to perform corporal works of mercy with. You will no doubt be pleased.

I thought you were done with me. You say you report me for abuse and say you are done with me then ping me again? How does that work in your world?

"What history book did THAT come out of?"

The bong water soaked pages of an anti-Catholic comic book.
