(05-22) 19:18 PDT ALAMEDA -- The man who said the world was going to end appeared at his front door in Alameda a day later, very much alive but not so well.

"It has been a really tough weekend," said Harold Camping, the 89-year-old fundamentalist radio preacher who convinced hundreds of his followers that the rapture would occur on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Massive earthquakes would strike, he said. Believers would ascend to heaven and the rest would be left to wander a godforsaken planet until Oct. 21, when Camping promised a fiery end to the world.

But on Sunday, almost 18 hours after he thought he'd be in heaven, there was Camping, "flabbergasted" in Alameda, wearing tan slacks, a tucked-in polo shirt and a light jacket.

Birds chirped. A gentle breeze blew. Across the street, neighbors focused on their yard work and the latest neighborhood gossip.

The same trumpet - the trumpet that is blown in Matt. 24:34; 1 Thess.4:16, and 1 Cor.15:51-52 is the last trumpet wherein Jesus returns the second time as he promised [John 14:3] . At that time there will be the resurrection of both believers and unbelievers, the final judgement and the new heaven and the new earth. (Revelation 20 is now being fulfilled in this, the “church age” — an indeterminate period of time described by the figure of speech, “a thousand years” — which will continue until Christ returns the second time where all those end-time events occur at once.)

I know this is meant is jest, but some believe this secret rapture nonsense. Matthew 24:30 makes it very clear that no one will miss it:

Big deal, a confused old man made a fool of himself. Camping hasn’t done one 1/100 of the damage the largest of the mainstream denominations have done in the last few years. Camping hasn’t been ordaining gays and women or denying the exclusivity of Christ as the only path to salvation.
