I write in the full consciousness that each persons route to reception into the Catholic Church is singular, a pathway he must follow alone, however conscious (and grateful) he may be for the solicitude and friendship of those who lead and guide him.
I was raised in a conventional Protestant household; went to church with my parents in a small New England village a Congregational church, one of whose ministers was Richard Niebuhr (whose piety and earnestness I well remember, and with gratitude). My boarding school obliged us to attend chapel daily, the rituals and hymns being more or less standard Episcopalian observances; the music of some of the great old hymns made a far more powerful impression on me than the sermons we heard and responsive readings we recited.
In college in the United States, and at the University of Oxford, and in significant ways through my reading of the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins and his early spiritual mentor, Cardinal John Henry Newman, I began to recognize what I might call a spiritual hunger for something which the church of which I remained a nominal member was unable to assuage. I began also, through Newman, but also through much reading (not very purposive or well-organized), to be drawn to the very early Church (Paul in particular), to the Church Fathers, to the sacrifices of its first Christians, and to what I was coming to believe was the Christian communion that had sustained their creeds, their faith, their consciousness of Christs glory.
This must be the holy Catholic Church. Its creeds were dogma immanent, unchanging, beyond cavil and I embraced them with an overwhelming consciousness that I was called to embrace them. I had to.

I wonder if he knows his Salvation in now in Mary.
Good story. I’ve read some of Gen. Bunting’s articles over the years. I’d like to meet him.
Now now, Mary died for no ones’ sins.
Bless your heart. I’m sure it’s never occurred to him to study and evaluate the Church’s Marian teachings and devotions. After all, it’s obvious from this article, his career, and his publication history that he’s a light-minded and barely-literate man ... like St. Thomas More, for example, or Pope Benedict.
(Fill in flashing holographic Sarcasm indicator here. Patent pending.)
Pope Pius IX said that 'all Salvation' is obtained in Mary. Ubi Primam 1849. Thus he said 'all salvation' for the catholic is obtained in Mary.
Could you explain how she did it?
What a ridiculous and uninformed statement!
Congrats, WELCOME and WELCOME HOME!
And I thank this new member for his service to the country as well.
I’m fascinated by the number of “I’m now a Catholic but I used to be an unsaved Protestant” posts that show up here.
All I know is that we’ve met dozens of ex-Catholics at our non-affiliated community church over the last few years, and since it’s a big place (22,000 for Easter worships) I’m sure there’s a lot more where those came from.
If Maryolatry wasn’t such an entrenched tradition the Catholic beliefs might be more compelling, but... there you go.
I think it's just hilarious the way you kids make up new words all the time. You're just soooo darn creative.
Why, you’ve found a couple of out-of-context quotes. Isn’t that clever? You could find the entire text of Pope Pius IX’s document at NewAdvent.org, and then, assuming good reading comprehension, you could understand the exact meaning he intended to convey. Having achieved this, you could either agree or disagree with the belief presented.
Don’t you think Gen. Bunting would be able to do something like that, if this particularly phrasing were of deep concern to him? Do you imagine he reached the age of 70, and his high military and academic positions, without ever encountering the Basic Anti-Catholic Talking Points?
I’m sure that’s true. Why, he taught at the same school as Stonewall Jackson. It just gives me the shivers ;-).
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting (both personally and professionally) a few VMI grads over the years. Outstanding gentlemen, all.
That would be "Ubi Primum". You guys never seem to get the Latin right.
Thus he said 'all salvation' for the catholic is obtained in Mary.
No, he said "every hope, every grace, and all salvation" came through Mary, because it was God's will that it be so. Not the same thing at all.
Jesus came through Mary. Jesus is all salvation. Ergo, all salvation came through Mary.
Those who repeat that old lie need to get used to hearing, "I never knew you" since that's the end result of such lies catching up with them. Especially those who think their salavation is in what (You Name Here) interprets the Scripture to mean based on the "Lego Block Method of Biblical Interpretation".
Good thing you dont know me, I would ruin the curve.
