I used to attend Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa. This was back in the late 80’s when Dr. Walter Martin was teaching there. This is kind of unbelievable.

I used to attend Calvary Costa Mesa back in the late 70s and know that Dr. Martin didn't agree with all of Calvary's teachings. I'd venture to say that not all Calvary pastors are in agreement with Pastor Chuck Smith and all his teachings all the time. Most likely in this instance also. I also remember that Dr. Martin said that 90% of people he'd interviewed were "heretics" in terms of how they described the nature of the Trinity. He didn't call them heretics to shame them but to help them understand that some teachings are hard to understand and convey. We are not saved by a perfect understanding or dogma, but God's grace.

I have known Calvary's teaching long enough to know that they clearly don't condone abortion; far from it. They clearly don't in any way prescribe the Emergent church. I know a professor who studies the Emergent church and he mentions to me all the time how antagonistic Calvary Chapel is it to it. I think that Chuck was speaking out of compassion to this woman (whether right or wrong) as a father and grandfather given her predicament. Pastor Chuck is not perfect (nor is any pastor) and if you look for perfection in any teacher then there is no one left to listen to but yourself.

This thread would be unintentionally funny if baby killing wasn’t involved. Here’s something to chew on: Protestants are almost always pro-abortion. They just don’t know it. If you’re for contraceptives, you’re for abortion.

Its not unbelievable. In fact, Dr Walter Martin himself made hay of the fact that the Bible doesnt speak to abortion and that he was okay with it. I listened to Bible Answer Man for years in the 80’s and those episodes when he talked like that were far and few between but they were his word and left me agog with a man that I had previously thought had a tight theology. He had a few other doctrinal quirks also, that were usually covered under that same abortion topic of what the Bible speaks to.

Just an FYI.

Pastor Chuck has just recently returned to his duties after back surgery.
