Pope includes Hindu verses in prayers on Good Friday

HINDUS HAVE applauded Pope Benedict for including verse from ancient Hindu scripture Upanishads in the Good Friday Meditations and Prayers led by him at Roman Colosseum.

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that it was a remarkable gesture from Pope and invited him to study more ancient Hindu scriptures, which were very rich in philosophical thought. He or other Hindu scholars would gladly provide the help and resources in this regard, if asked, Zed added.

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, also commended His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI for inclusion of a verse from India’s Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali and reference to peace icon Mahatma Gandhi in these prayers.

This year’s 'Way of the Cross at the Colesseum' Meditations and Prayers on Good Friday, led by Pope, included well-known verse from Brahadaranyakopanishad (“Lead me from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality”), line from Tagore’s Gitanjali (“Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service”) and reference to Mahatma Gandhi.

Rajan Zed stressed that all religions should work together for a just and peaceful world. Dialogue would bring us mutual enrichment, he added.

Pope Benedict heads the Roman Catholic Church, which is the largest of the Christian denominations. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksha (liberation) is its ultimate goal.

This is a good verse to describe what is going on:

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. - Hebrews 4:12

Exactly. One other thing I'm struck with in reading through John 8. One of the many sections where Jesus was confronted by the shall we say 'religious magisterium' of His day - the Scribes and Pharisees. Notice their response in v. 6 to Christ's teaching:

"They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground."

Also at the end of v. 13 - they attack him claiming "Your testimony is not true."

Then again in v. 59, "Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him,....."

We stand in some pretty good company I think.

Someone mentioned this before and the more I think about it, the more I realize it’s true.

The real issue is a matter of authority.

Is a church the final authority?

Or is Scripture?

Scripture condemns the Catholic church in several areas, which is apparently why it tries to hard to claim authorship of it. That way it makes Scripture subservient to it.

The popes of history have been shown to be evil, corrupt men. The popes of today don’t display that kind of corruption and depravity, but are certainly lacking in discernment, which they would have if they sought it and followed Scripture.

Truth does not compromise with lies or error.

Good observation while taking God’s Word and applying it to real life situations, as we should. I’m going to read and meditate a bit on John 8 now - so thank you!!

On the other hand bait is not needed if a few sticks of dynamite are thrown in the water.

Right on, metmom. And some have no problem throwing the 'cover' of love on aligning itself with lies/errors - like this display of the hindu/catholic mass or whatever it was.

The problem that some people don’t get is that love doesn’t mean telling people what they want to hear, or sugar coating spiritual truths.

Jesus was love personified and He was direct enough.

Interestingly, while Jesus and the Pharisees tossed back and forth the accusations of being followers of Satan, it wasn’t just a battle of words.

When Jesus said it, it was because it was true. The Pharisees claimed it because they didn’t like the challenge of their authority. They kept trying to put themselves above God’s word and appealed to tradition to back themselves up.

Imagine that.

And perhaps a treat of a week at a hot springs resort every month!

Wish I were wealthy—I’d spring for it!

Very insightful. That's exactly what they were doing.

Imagine that.

Image that, indeed. Satan is still using the same tactic against God's WORD being THE FINAL AUTHORITY today. Nothing new under the sun.

NOTHING will change the Truth that GOD'S WORD always was and will always be THE FINAL AUTHORITY. 'Man' and his/her puffed up anti-Christ spirit WILL bow to HIM/HIS WORD before their eternal destruction.

Thank You, God, for YOUR WORD and the 'narrow path' of ONLY TRUTH which IT leads us on.

Psalm 1

1Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

3He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers. 4The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalm 19:7-11

7 The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure,
making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
9the fear of the LORD is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the LORD are true,
and righteous altogether.
10More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
11Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.

“According to HIS WORD - not man-made doctrine.”

Exactly. The Word of God through Scripture and the Tradition of His Apostles and Church.
