Pope includes Hindu verses in prayers on Good Friday

HINDUS HAVE applauded Pope Benedict for including verse from ancient Hindu scripture Upanishads in the Good Friday Meditations and Prayers led by him at Roman Colosseum.

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that it was a remarkable gesture from Pope and invited him to study more ancient Hindu scriptures, which were very rich in philosophical thought. He or other Hindu scholars would gladly provide the help and resources in this regard, if asked, Zed added.

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, also commended His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI for inclusion of a verse from India’s Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali and reference to peace icon Mahatma Gandhi in these prayers.

This year’s 'Way of the Cross at the Colesseum' Meditations and Prayers on Good Friday, led by Pope, included well-known verse from Brahadaranyakopanishad (“Lead me from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality”), line from Tagore’s Gitanjali (“Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service”) and reference to Mahatma Gandhi.

Rajan Zed stressed that all religions should work together for a just and peaceful world. Dialogue would bring us mutual enrichment, he added.

Pope Benedict heads the Roman Catholic Church, which is the largest of the Christian denominations. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksha (liberation) is its ultimate goal.

There are several world religions that have admirable traits, thoughts and philosophies that can help us gain a better understanding of what we are to be.”

____________ Agreed. Why anyone would get panties in a wad over this is beyond me.

*********************************

I can think of a few that might get their panties in a wad:

I am the LORD, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images. - Isaiah 42:8

For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, - I Timothy 2:5

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, - Hebrews 1:1 & 2a

As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! - Galatians 1:9

And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. - Acts 4:12

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." - John 14:6

Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds. - II John 9-11

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. - Colossians 2:8

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. - II Timothy 4:3-4

*********************

The Scripture no where says that we are to follow or believe or ally with anyone, or anything, that detracts from God's revealed Word. It is either to be shunned, anathema, myth, empty, evil, do not participate in, etc. etc. etc.

Who cares what Natural Law says? It's God's Law that men are called to obey.

Leviticus 10:1 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them. 2 And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.

Would Natural Law have predicted this outcome?

Unless I misunderstood your first post, you also called Christ a “prophet.” He was not a prophet. He WAS the promised Messiah that the actual prophets spoke of. Your wording there made me actually believe you were a Muslin as they believe Christ only to be one of many prophets.

Wow. Great verses!

lol. That is the question, isn't it?

All attempts to puff up men at the expense of the Triune God fail miserably (and as we see in Leviticus, some failures are worse than others.)

My God and the Messiah he sent to his people seems to have a lot more self esteem then the one you follow. Try to grow in your faith.

Great and informative post, Q.

I notice in your footnotes a reference to "Christianity and Liberalism" by J. Gresham Machen. That is a terrific book and more timely than ever. Here it is online here...

CHRISTIANITY AND LIBERALISM

From the introduction...

This book, first published in 1923, is a classic treatment of the age old controversy between Orthodox Christianity and Liberalism. Machen contrasts the errors of liberalism with the basic foundational truths of Biblical Christianity such as: Doctrine, God and man, the Bible, Christ, Salvation, and the Church. Machen's book is scriptural, thought-provoking, well-reasoned, and relevent today. Your faith in the Bible and its basic doctrines will be strengthened. It is worth your time to read this important book. This book is in the public domain according to ccel.org

Isn't the internet amazing?

Thank you for your post...,

Yes, I am pretty much at the point where I would agree with you concerning the FR catholics. Unfortunately they do believe any who oppose their teachings is against catholics in general...which I don’t think this is the case. But this too has been programmed into their teachings. They are so intertwined with Rome, the Pope and their church institution being their salvation ,first and foremost, that it is more than difficult for them to be remotely open to what the Lord would otherwise instruct them in. Their hearts are hardened in that respect.

I came to a re-newed and ever grateful appreciation for the Reformation as well, from seeing the beliefs of the catholics here...as well my own research about. And as I went I noted how stunted their church membership really is....I was both amazed and very saddened for I had anticipated a far more favorable conclusion than what has proved possible.

My God and My Messiah are found in the pages of Scripture, no where else. If you want to follow one outside of Scripture made up by the empty philosophies of a reprobate mankind, knock yourself out. You might have a god of high self-esteem but my God is a HOLY God who will judge the sins of men on HIS terms not ours.

As to 'growing in my faith'....if it means rejecting Scripture and following after the creeds of men rather than God, no thanks I'll pass on that kind of 'growth'.

Thanks for your kind words.

I thought it was rather accurate and rather soberingly illustrative of the realities involved.

Wasn’t my chart—just stumbled onto it looking for stats on how many RC’s really believe Mary was sinless.

Try to grow in your faith.

BTW: Growth in the faith doesn't come by taking a bit here, sampling a bit over there, oh that sounds good about that religion over there ecumenism approach. Faith is not some sort of smorgasbord buffet you can pick and choose from.

Real faith and real growth comes from the Word of God, i.e, Scripture:

"like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation," - 2 Peter 2:2

Still a great chart no matter how you came by it. I’m still dumbfounded 67% of RCs actually BELIEVE Christ was a sinner. Might explain why every RC church I go into statues of Mary are more prominent than Christ Himself is!

I will pray that your association with the Lord will grow beyond an ability to cut and paste words, the depth of which you seem not to comprehend.

You will be mentioned in special intentions at mass this Sunday, and in my prayers regularly.

Do not make this thread "about" individual Freepers. That is also a form of "making it personal."

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

Hmmmm the Words of the LORD are now reduced to 'cut and paste' huh? My association with the Lord must grow beyond the Scriptures is basically what you are suggesting?

Time for more cut and paste:

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. - II Timothy 3:16-17

(Note it doesn't say 'some' Scripture, and it doesn't say 'partially' equipped).

I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book. - Revelation 22:18-19

God doesn't want anyone adding to or taking away from His Word. That includes creeds and traditions and endless unbiblical sacraments.

Go ahead and mention me in 'mass' all you want to. Too bad though you have to go to 'mass' to be able to pray. I can pray anywhere, anytime I want to. So I can pray for you right now, and right here. Specifically that the Lord will open your eyes to the truth using those cut and pasted scriptures you have such a low opinion of.
