When will the mockery of the Catholic Church cease? Not anytime soon it seems.
Penance the new free iPhone application that allows users to anonymously confess their sins to other users, and to give absolution, makes a mockery not only of the Church and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but also of the Churchs structure.
By confessing and absolving, users are able to accrue horns or halos. The more notable confessors are ranked with titles such as Saints to Bishops, Cardinals, and Holy Father/Mother of the Church. The highest ranking users are allowed to issue week-long edicts to those below them.
The application, created by Birmingham, England-based Hasham Abbas and developed by Entropy Limited, is being made available directly through Apples iPhone app store.
Whats fascinating is that the very same folks who like to rail against the authority and the hierarchy of the Church seem to have no problem submitting to a false hierarchy.
By creating a virtual hierarchy and a virtual sacrament, theyve made a mockery of the real one a real Sacrament with the power to transmit Christs grace and forgiveness through the Churchs priests.

I confess to the one and only God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) I don’t need and intermediary.
So I take it that you are happy with this app and you are glad it was developed.
Core_Conservative claimed he/she confesses only to God, therefore he/she has no use for the iPhone app.

one only has to look at their rules about the church, schools and the media to know that they have been fighting since 63 .
shame much of this agenda will not get out due to them having completed most of their rules and the rule 20, 21
Sounds to me like he/she approved of it.
Punching your ticket to Hell, yeah there’s an app for that.
Seems like a double standard.
Apple iTunes passed an application that mocks Christianity; but they are too cowardly to mock an App that mocks Islam.
Wonder if there is any money in that? Make a Call to prayer that runs 30 minutes late, and has a woman singing something quite rude in Arabic.
Hmmmmm
The app is ridiculous and harmless in my opinion, but since Apple is doing the censorship bit, they look like hypocrites for approving this one. Didn’t they bar some others that had religious content?
Strange I find myself defending someone I’ve never even met. Where in his/her statement did he/she write of approval? Please cite specific examples.
Better brush up on your knowledge of Scripture.
Not surprising that a person of Jobs character would let this fly.
Ah, the surefire method for rationalizing one's sins away.
Actually no - I was suggesting that I don’t need an app to ask God for forgiveness of my sins. BTW - for you Catholics - I was raised Lutheran
I think I do all right in my scripture knowledge
I’m sorry - do I really need to talk to a Priest or anyone else for that matter for forgiveness of sins? I think not (unless you include the person or persons I sinned against)
James 5:16. It’s not a suggestion.
Based on what they said and wrote, St. Paul, St. Matthew, St. John, St. James and the Almighty Himself would disagree with your self evaluation.
Since you were raised Lutheran, do you have any idea what Luther thought about auricular confession?
Some are more equal than others.
The Luther quote “When I ask you to go to Confession, I am simply asking you to be a Christian.”
