It is evident from what has been said, that the Mormons, as such, can have no part or lot in the religion of Jesus Christ—and we do not see how any one can be their friend, (as Mormons,) without being an enemy to God.

LDS Not Excluded by Belief or Practice

When critics make the claim that LDS are not Christian, they typically will present a laundry list of doctrines and practices that they believe put LDS outside the category of "Christian." At its base, this claim is an excellent example of the No true Scotsman fallacy.

There are two problems with such lists. The first, and most important, is that the original and enduring meaning of "Christian" has been a person or group whose beliefs or practices are founded on the life and/or teachings of Christ. That is, all groups whose religion is founded on Jesus of Nazareth have been classified as Christian since the term was first coined in the first century, regardless of specific beliefs and practices. "Christian" has always included such wildly diverse groups as the Ebionites, the Marcionites, and the Christian Gnostics of ancient times, along with Unitarians and Coptic Christians in modern times. Critics may believe that LDS are "false Christians" or "heretical Christians" or "hell-bound Christians," seeing that such terms are subjective and without standard definitions, but neither belief nor practice can exclude any group from the family of Christian religions and denominations if that group claims to be founded on the life or teachings of the first-century Jesus of Nazareth.

The second problem with the critics' list is that their list of objectionable beliefs and practices used to exclude LDS from the Christian family are lists of beliefs and practices that are found in other groups that are clearly classified as Christian. The claimed bases for the charge that the LDS are not Christians include:

Unfortunately for the critic, all of these doctrinal differences have been held not just by the LDS, but by other Christians as well, including the early Christians of the first and second centuries.[1] These Christians:

One might debate whether these Christians were correct or complete in their beliefs, but can the critics seriously exclude them from the family of Christians?[2]

The critics essentially create a definition of "Christian" that includes their brand of Christianity, and excludes others with whom they disagree.

LDS Classified as Christian

The assertion that Latter-day Saints are not Christian has at its base the idea that the Latter-day Saints don't meet the definition of the word "Christian." But the meanings of words are determined by usage and acceptance. If a definition is widespread (used by many people), persistent (used over a long period of time), and established (accepted by individuals and organizations that are respected and assumed to be knowledgeable) then we can confidently state that the definition is correct and accurate.

The attempt to define "Christian" in such a way as to exclude Latter-day Saints (and many other groups that are generally considered to be some kind of Christian denomination or religion) is really the recent work of a minority group within Protestantism. The nearly-universal and nearly-2000-year-old usage of the word "Christian" has clearly included unorthodox groups that disagree, sometimes sharply, with the teachings and practices of those who claim to be able to define Latter-day Saints out of the Christian fold.

The following are some organizations and resources that classify The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Christian. The range of sources from encyclopedias to media outlets to government organizations supports the fact that the definition of "Christian" includes Latter-day Saints.

Saints claim to be Christian only recently?

This claim is absurd. The critics depend on their audience not knowing much about LDS history for this claim. Enemies and members of the Church have long known that Church members consider themselves "Christian" (italics added in all cases):

Clearly, the Church has "claimed" to be Christian for a long time, and even hostile critics realized it. To insist that this is a new, public relations move is false. Neutral observers have also seen the Church as Christian. Only a recent, intolerant fringe of fundamentalist Christianity has tried to exclude the Church from Christianity by self-serving definitions.

Conclusion

Critics use a self-serving and self-referential definition of "Christian" to exclude the LDS. They ignore the fact that many other Christians over the millennia would have disagreed with them on the same points, yet this does not disqualify these other believers from the family of "Christians."

Claims that the Church has only recently been asserting its Christian status are false, as attested by LDS scripture, practice, doctrine, and public statements of its leadership and its early critics.

Ironically, many of those who attack the Church and its members for not being Christians show a distinct lack of the Christian virtues themselves:

There has been no end to opposition. There are misinterpretations and misrepresentations of us and of our history, some of it mean-spirited and certainly contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ and His gospel. Sometimes clergy, even ministerial organizations, oppose us. They do what we would never do. We do not attack or criticize or oppose others as they do us...Strangest of all, otherwise intelligent people claim we are not Christian. This shows that they know little or nothing about us. It is a true principle that you cannot lift yourself by putting others down.[50]

Looks like I’ll have to call my mother, because, there you go, you irritated me again. I guess the Papists can’t help themselves, they can’t say anything without using the words, “the” church, which according to them always means “the” RCC. Protestants are not part of “the” church.

The Reformers gave a hundred reasons why you are not “the” church, rather a Babylonian usurper.

If you will notice, Mormonism is getting refuted on this thread by sound principles of Christianity, you attempt to refute it by “the” church, the RCC. Won’t work, pots and kettles.

Someone is programming you to travel the broad road and you're skipping toward the wide gate, son. When you spend a few years actually reading and studying the Bible, you will discover--if you're spirit is alive with Christ--that God manifests Himself in three functional ways. These ways are the fundamental truth found in the Tanakh and the News Testament. That you can repeat the canned objections conjured up by the dead-soul leadership of Mormonism is not surprising. What is surprising is the way you proudly refuse to do the work to find out if these teachers are lying to you and dragging you along with them on their plummet into Hell!

The One God evidences Himself in the work He is doing

God The Father Almighty is greater than His creation, thus greater than dimension time and dimension space, thus we may think of The Father Almighty as beyond time and space but not prevented from touching and indeed penetrating His creation.

The universe of space and time is likened to a bubble: what is inside the bubble is in time and space. But the nature of what is inside the bubble is only partially understood in modern Physics. What we do know is no 'thing' can exist without space and no event can take place without time. God The Father Almighty created these by His Word, the same Word Who was made flesha nd dwelt among us (John 1).

In John's gospel we find that Jesus is The Word made flesh Who dwelt among us. So, inside the bubble Created by The Father Almighty, sustained by God The Holy Spirit, is the Word, God made flesh Who dwelt among us. The Creator does not stop being greater than His creation bubble, nor does His Spirit cease to sustain it all in balance, when Jesus comes in the flesh to dwell among us.

The trinitarian nature of God is shown in the Bible, even in the Tanakh. Trinity IS the nature of God as we have been given to know. Even in the Old Testament/Tanakh, we do have instruction on the Three nature of God as Creator, Sustainer, and Deliverer. God Is manifested as three yet one, seen identified by 'the work He is doing'.

With each manifestation, we are given to realize His presence simultaneously as Creator--because we exist in the realm He created, as Sustainer--because the balance is too delicate to stand alone without His sustaining the separation and interdependence, and as God with us in the person of Jesus our Lord and Savior.

By God's Spirit those who are Born Again are one with Christ. It takes the life of God to manifest the character of God in the human being. And yes, it can be imitated, as your religious cult shows graphically. But int he final cuttin', your own blasphemies prove God's Life is not in you else you could not blaspheme as you so readily, willingly, and arrogantly do. ...

And as you rile up and want to refute what I just wrote to your membership, remember that at the last Judgment, when those not members of Christ's Bride--The Church your founding sexual predator of married women claimed disappeared for 1700+ years--are standing for final judgment and eternal destiny, we read int he Bible there pleaded folks who claimed to done wonderous things in His name, casting out demons and healing, yet Jesus will say to them "Depart from Me, I never knew you." Jesus will refuse to recognize you in that day if you persist in blasphemy. Your blasphemies are far more damning than a beer or even practicing polygamy.

If you don't like the word 'triune', pick another that expresses the three functional evidences of The One God by the work He is doing ... if you can. There is only I AM, and He has no rival or superior, and He did not have to 'gain the attributes of godhood, as your blaspheming founder and subsequent leadership of the LDS have taught on the broad road rushing toward the wide gate.

Here are a couple of direct blasphemous quotes from your religious leadership. You owe it to your eternal destiny to study whether these blasphemies agree with what the Bible teaches:

God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted Man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens. That is the great secret. (Joseph Smith, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 3, 1844)

"In the very beginning the Bible shows there is a plurality of Gods beyond the power of refutation. It is a great subject I am dwelling on. The word Eloheim ought to be in the plural all the way through--Gods. The heads of the Gods appointed ONE God for us... (Joseph Smith, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 372)

“I learned a testimony concerning Abraham, and he reasoned concerning the Gods of heaven. '...Intelligences exist one above another, so that there is no end to them.' If Abraham reasoned thus--If Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and John discovered that God the Father of Jesus Christ had a Father, you may suppose that He had a Father also. Where was there ever a son without a father? And where was there ever a father without first being a son? Whenever did a tree or anything spring into existence without a progenitor? And everything comes in this way. Paul says that which is earthly is in the likeness of that which is heavenly. Hence if Jesus had a Father, can we not believe that He had a Father also? I despise the idea of being scared to death at such a doctrine, for the Bible is full of it. I want you to pay particular attention to what I am saying. Jesus said that the Father wrought precisely in the same way as His Father had done before Him. As the Father had done before? He laid down His life, and took it up the same as His Father had done before. (Joseph Smith, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 373)

No reference to the Trinity in the Bible? How about this?

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (Matt. 28:19).

And there are several other passages where Jesus speaks much the same words.

Perhaps you would like to add to the material on the Triune nature of The One God. A few years ago you posted one of the most exhaustive essays I’ve ever read on the Bible passages which teach the three nature nature of The One God. I don’t know that the Mormons reading this thread would read it, but would you like to post that material again?

Joseph Smith taught the church needed to be restored in the 19th century, others believe it needed to be restored in the 16th century. The Church of the Bible nevers needs to be restored. False doctrine is false doctrine. Were it not for the Church, there would be no Bible to refute the LDS with. Jesus prayed we’d all be one, yet some call the Church a “cult”. Once you reject the “one, holy, catholic and apostolic church”, any and all doctrines are possible i guess.

I appreciate the advice. I can’t figure out if there really is that much ignorance of what the Church teaches or if false charges are knowingly put out to keep people out of the Church. If it’s the former, I feel it’s worthwhile to post and possible to win over a brother. If it’s the latter, hopefully God will be glorified despite the lies.

I recommend the book “Pilgrim Church” by EH Broadbent. It’s an excelllent church history book about independent (of Rome) church groups for the past 2000 years .

You obviously have read the book, can you tell me what group he claims were the church in opposition to the Catholic Church in say, the 3rd century? Also, how did this counter Catholic Church agree on the NT canon. It’s quite a coincidence that this rival church had the same 27 book NT as the Catholic Church. Thanks for the response.

Nothing of Joe and the mormon scam can be archaeologically or anthropologically proven.

you peaked my interest, so i looked up the book online and found it’s table of contents. it apperas the author has found any group that opposed the Catholic Church and included it in the book. the groups have no continuity, no doctrines in common with each other except being opposed to the Catholic Church. for example, he includes the Nestorians, who taught there were two seperate Jesus’s, do you believe that. he picks one heretical group here and then another over here and claims they are the church. i give the author credit for at least realizing the true Church which the Apostles planted needs to still be in existance today. the problem is what he lays out in the book is a bunch of groups all teaching different doctrines. God is not the author of confusion.
